Shape-shifting shell of retroviruses detailed

ScienceDaily (June 4, 2012) ? Scientists at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany, have for the first time uncovered the detailed structure of the shell that surrounds the genetic material of retroviruses, such as HIV, at a crucial and potentially vulnerable stage in their life cycle: when they are still being formed. The study, published online today in Nature, provides information on a part of the virus that may be a potential future drug target.

Retroviruses essentially consist of genetic material encased in a protein shell, which is in turn surrounded by a membrane. After entering a target cell ? in the case of HIV, one of the cells in our immune system ? the virus replicates, producing more copies of itself, each of which has to be assembled from a medley of viral and cellular components into an immature virus.

?All the necessary components are brought together within the host cell to form the immature virus, which then has to mature into a particle that?s able to infect other cells? says John Briggs, who led the research at EMBL. ?We found that when it does, the changes to the virus? shell are more dramatic than expected.?

Both the mature and immature virus shells are honeycomb-like lattices of hexagon-shaped units. Using a combination of electron microscopy and computer-based methods, Briggs and colleagues investigated which parts of the key proteins stick together to build the honeycomb of the immature shell. These turned out to be very different from the parts that build the mature shell. This knowledge will help scientists to unravel how the immature virus is assembled in the cell and how the shell proteins rearrange themselves to go from one form to the other.

Findings such as these may one day prove valuable to those wanting to design new types of anti-retroviral therapies. Many anti-retroviral drugs already block the enzyme that would normally separate components of the immature shell to allow it to mature. But there are currently no approved drugs that act on that shell itself and prevent the enzyme from locking on.

Although the virus shells imaged in this study were derived from the Mason-Pfizer monkey virus and made artificially in the laboratory, they closely resemble those of both this virus and HIV ? which are very similar ? in their natural forms.

?We still need a lot more detailed information before drug design can really be contemplated,? Briggs concludes, ?but finally being able to compare mature and immature structures is a step forwards.?

The work was done in collaboration with the group of Tomas Ruml at the Institute of Chemical Technology in Prague, Czech Republic.

Four Vanguard ETFs for Long-Term Investors - Zacks.com

The global economy is burdened with uncertainty at this time thanks to the ongoing debt crisis in Europe and low levels of GDP growth and high unemployment in the US.

However, while markets might be shaky in the intermediate term, those in it for the long haul could see some decent values in the marketplace at this time. This is especially true for those willing to sacrifice a little short term pain for gains years in the future.

While you can do this with individual securities, there are a number of ETFs which could be a better choice. These funds offer exposure to a wide variety of stocks which are suitable for long-term investing.

In particular, a look at some of Vanguard?s products could be the ideal way to go. These securities generally have the lowest expense ratios on the market and can be a great way to gain broad exposure to market segments with the least cost possible. In particular, we like the following four Vanguard ETFs for long-term focused investors at this time:

Vanguard MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (VWO)

As domestic markets and European economies continue to sputter, growth in equities becomes harder to come by. In this light, a look at the quickly growing emerging markets could be ideal for some investors who have a higher risk tolerance at this time. These nations not only have greater growth potential but also lesser correlation with their developed market counterparts (Three Overlooked Emerging Market ETFs)

Investors who are willing to take higher risks in the hope of achieving greater growth rates can invest in Vanguard MSCI Emerging Markets ETF.

This?fund tracks the MSCI Emerging Markets Index in order to give investors exposure to a basket of stocks across various developing nations. The product has proven to be extremely popular with investors as $67.7 billion is under management in the fund while trading volume is close to 18.5 million shares per day. Also, the cost appears to be minimal at 20 basis points.

In terms of a portfolio, VWO provides access to 903 securities in its basket and doesn?t allocate more than 3.8% to any one stock in particular. This suggests that the product is well diversified from an individual security perspective and is unlikely to face company specific risk (read Three Emerging Market ETFs to Limit BRIC Exposure).

With regard to country exposure, China takes the top spot at 17.5% of assets, followed by 16.1% in Brazil, 14.4% in Korea, and a 10.7% allocation to Taiwan.

Vanguard Small-Cap ETF (VB)

When constructing a portfolio, investors should consider the small-cap segment as an equity component. In recent years, the small-cap segment has seen a ramp up in demand attributable to its promising long-term growth potential.

This slice of the market has the capability to improve the risk adjusted returns of the portfolio and reward investors with steady gains in the long term. The risky attribute of the asset class warrants unparalleled returns in comparison to its large-cap counterparts.

However, one trait that goes against it is the volatility. Small-cap stocks are more volatile in nature than the blue chip counterparts.???

Investors seeking to play in this corner of the market can invest in Vanguard Small-Cap ETF. This ETF provides exposure to a diversified group of 1,735 small-cap stocks at a minimal cost of 16 basis points. In terms of liquidity, the fund occupies the third position in the small-cap ETF space.

VB is well diversified both in individual holdings as well as sector holdings. Just 2.8% of its asset base of $26.2 billion is invested in the top 10 holdings. Foot Locker, Inc. (FL) and Taubman Centers Inc. (TCO) occupy top spots in the large basket of stocks.

In terms of sector exposure, the fund allocates 21.6% of the asset base to Financials while Industrials and Information Technology have a share of 17.1% and 16.3%, respectively. Over a period of one year, the fund delivered a return of 1.03%.

Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF (VIG)

Attributable to risks in the market and extreme stock volatility over the past few years, many investors sought out more stability in their portfolios along with high levels of current income. Unfortunately, bond yields were quite low pushing many into high dividend paying stocks instead. (Ten Biggest U.S. Equity Market ETFs)

Beyond individual securities, investments in equity ETFs which have stocks that pay high dividend yields emerged as a source of decent income for investors at this time. This has proven to be a pretty good strategy as intermediate term bonds are still yielding below broad stock markets and while broad equities remain under pressure (Emerging Markets Dividend ETFs for Income, Growth & Diversification).

For a dividend-focused approach for the long-term investor in the ETF space, a closer look at VIG could be warranted. The fund tracks the Dividend Achievers Select Index which looks to focus on U.S. common stocks that have a history of increasing dividends for at least ten consecutive years.

This produces a fund that pays out a solid dividend yield of roughly 2.18% a year, a good level considering the focus of the fund. Investors should also note that over $13.5 billion is under management in the fund and that both expenses are reasonable (0.18%) and volume is high (671,100 shares per day).???

The product holds a basket of 134 dividend paying stocks. The large cap constituents of the top 10 holdings have a share of 38.6% in net asset. Among these, International Business Machines (IBM), The Coca-Cola Company (KO) and Procter & Gamble Co. (PG) take the top three spots.

In terms of sectors, this dividend ETF is tilted towards Consumer staples (23.4%), Industrials (22.4%), and Consumer Discretionary (15.3%).

Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC)

With the entire U.S. equity market in the doldrums, it has been a rough time to be a stock investor. However, a few of the defensive sectors have been able to hold up better than most, including the traditional safe havens such as consumer staples.

Consumer staples firms have been a solid performer as of late and could continue to have a leadership role in the long term. That is because consumer staples firms remain more or less impervious to economic cycles and play a defensive role when the macro economy is under pressure. (Top Three Consumer Staples ETFs)

Investors seeking to play this with the broader basket of stocks at the lowest cost possible should invest in Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF. The fund provides exposure in stocks of companies that provide direct-to-consumer products based on consumer spending habits and are considered non-discretionary.

The ETF tracks the MSCI US Investable Market Consumer Staples 25/50 Index and tracks a broader basket of 108 consumer staples stocks. The fund has a total asset base of $1,031 million of which 64.1% is invested in the top 10 holdings.

Among the different industries, household products and soft drinks take the top spots with 37.3% of investment made in these two categories. VDC charges a rock bottom premium of 19 basis points for the investment.

Elizabeth Emken, California GOP's endorsed candidate for US Senate, inspired by Sarah Palin

"I will relentlessly pursue federal policies that foster free market capitalism and promote business growth and investment in America" From Eric Dondero: Elizabeth Emken is the likely Republican nominee for US Senate to challenge longtime Democrat incumbent Dianne Feinstein. From her bio:
For over a decade Elizabeth Emken has served as an advocate for developmentally disabled children, most recently as Vice President for Government Relations at Autism Speaks, the Nation?s largest science and advocacy organization devoted to the public health emergency of autism. Before becoming active with the autism issue, Elizabeth served in management, financial analysis, and corporate operations at IBM. As an efficiency and cost cutting expert, Elizabeth utilized activity-based cost analyses to identify administrative savings across IBM U.S. ? helping streamline operations, eliminate waste, and save the company millions of dollars. Elizabeth graduated from UCLA in 1984 with degrees in Economics and Political Science. Her studies included course work at Cambridge University, where she focused on political and economic issues in China and the Middle East. Elizabeth began helping families of children with autism, like her son Alex, more than a decade ago when she learned how little was being done to help individuals and families with disabilities.
Now the local Patch.com for Belmont Shores, reveals Emken is a big Sarah Palin fan - "California Senate Challenger Has Local Roots - The woman the California Republican Party has endorsed her against veteran Sen. Dianne Feinstein grew up in Seal Beach and attended Los Alamitos schools":
She is a fan of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin and said the media overreacted to Palin's 2008 vice presidential nomination, adding the media couldn't handle a woman who is a fiscal conservative and has charisma. When she first ran in 2010, Emken cited that media uproar as part of her motivation for seeking office. "A small part of me is running in this race because of that hysterical reaction," she said at the time.

(AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham says the United States needs Europe "to be strong and operating at full speed once again" in order for America to completely recover from its own economic downturn.

She says the U.S. supports the need for changes among the 17 countries that share the euro as their currency, in order to make Europe more competitive and deal with issues various countries haven't addressed.

Clinton said at a news conference in Stockholm that the tough decisions are up to the Europeans themselves.

Belt-tightening has been the approach for coping with a debt crisis that has raised the possibility of the breakup of the single currency. But some leaders are now calling for measures to increase growth and employment to offset the impact of austerity policies.

Kansas High School Fishing State Championship June 25 | Rural ...

by Editor | June 3, 2012 at 12:43 AM

PONCA CITY, Okla. ? The Bass Federation (TBF), in partnership with FLW Outdoors, announced it will host the inaugural Student Angler Federation Kansas High School Fishing State Championship June 25 at Wilson Lake just outside of Russell, Kan. The state championship is a two-person team event for students in grades 9-12.

Registration for high school anglers and their ?coach,? who will provide the boat they compete in, is available online at HighSchoolFishing.org or by calling?(580) 765-9031?. Check-in begins at 4 p.m. on Friday, June 24, at the TBF tournament trailer, Wilson State Park, Hells Creek Ramp, with a mandatory rules briefing at 6 p.m. We highly encourage all teams to pre-register online or by phone in advance to avoid late-registration fees.

?Russell County is pleased and excited to host the high school championship tournament,? Russell County Economic Development and Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Janae Talbott stated. ?We love to see youth carrying on the heritage of fishing for both respect of their environment and the recreation value Kansas has to offer both hunters and fishermen.?

Students and parents can go to HighSchoolFishing.org for details on the Student Angler Federation (SAF) and to sign up. Cost is only $25/ year and includes full TBF and FLW Outdoors benefits, including access to the all-new FLW Outdoors Magazine e-Edition and insurance coverage for students and their club. The winning two-person team from each state championship will advance to an FLW Outdoors/TBF High School Fishing Regional Championship held in conjunction with a National Guard FLW College Fishing Regional Championship hosted on a college campus this fall.

Ranger boats will be provided for the high school anglers to fish from at each regional championship, and the winners from each regional will advance to the FLW Outdoors/TBF High School Fishing National Championship held on a college campus in conjunction with the National Guard FLW College Fishing National Championship in the spring of 2012. All SAF members and state championship participants qualify for the largest event in high school fishing, the 2011 High School Fishing World Finals, July 20-23 in Russellville, Ark., to compete for thousands in college scholarships and prizes. Start planning your vacation now! Each team that qualifies for a regional and/or national championship will receive a travel allowance to help offset expenses. The High School Fishing National Championship winner?s will also each receive a $5,000 scholarship to use at the university of their choice.

If you?re not an SAF member, there?s a $25 fee per angler for the state championship, which includes full TBF/FLW Outdoors membership benefits, and the onetime fee covers ALL SAF sanctioned events all year!

?We?re very excited to be working with the TBF of Kansas Federation and the Russell County Economic Development and Convention and Visitors Bureau to help bring this event to Kansas,? TBF National President Robert Cartlidge said. ?Our affiliated state federations are the backbone of the industry; they?re on the ground doing the work to put on events of this kind all over the nation. Russell County is actively supporting your nation?s youth participation in clean family activities. This event gives high school anglers a chance to grow their skills, have some fun, compete to advance, and get involved with other programs the Kansas TBF Federation has to offer.?

?High school anglers are fortunate to have the TBF of Kansas well established in this state and eager to help with this event, which promises to be a great one,? TBF National Youth Director Mark Gintert commented. ?Our Student Angler Federation has a great start in Kansas with several students participating in our High School Fishing World Finals last year held in Russellville, Arkansas. I?m sure they?re ready to show everyone in the state how far they?ve come as anglers.?

Another unique feature of an SAF sanctioned event is the ?angler testing? component. Anglers can take a free online test at HighSchoolFishing.org about boater safety, conservation and angler ethics, which makes them eligible for contingency awards at their state championship. ?It?s an industry first by TBF and a tremendous way to emphasize the importance of education to these student anglers,? Gintert commented. ?The Federation is driven by our desire to promote education through fishing and the testing component is designed to do exactly that. Put this package together with our partnership with FLW Outdoors and the sky is the limit. These young anglers will have opportunities unlike anything the industry has ever seen.?
