SMS language ..... symbol for 'the' - Melbourne restaurateur

LUV; TIME; CU; ATM; LOL; KISS?????.the language of modern day youngsters which make English teachers and others red hot.. defying common abbreviations; no grammar; no syntax; no part of speech, omission of words?.. ??? still people communicate and most understand too?.Whether you like it or not? the SMS language of textese [text speak / text lingo] has come to stay.? Short Message Service (SMS) is a text messaging service component of phone, web, or mobile communication systems, using standardized communications protocols that allow the exchange of short text messages between fixed line or mobile phone devices. SMS is the most widely used data application in the world, with 3.5 billion active users, or 78% of all mobile phone subscribers. In smartphones it is relatively easier as you have a bigger key boards ~ the touch phones provide a different type of facility but the standard screen in common mobiles where you have numbers and alphabets [3 or 4 per key] together poses a big challenge ? still you can find people typing out messages faster ? sitting in public transport ? worser still some while driving and walking? also ?. !!!Down under there this restaurateur in Melbourne ? Paul Mathis who is trying to make people type differently.? Australian press report of the initiative of Mathis on the most-used word in the English ? more particularly the definite article, the word "the". "The word 'and' is only the fifth-most used word in English and it has its own symbol ? the ampersand," says Mathis. "Isn't it time we accorded the same respect to 'the'?"
One pressing reason on why there should be a symbol for ?the? is the texting space.? Typing the symbol he has devised with a single keystroke will save time and ? crucially, in the context of Twitter ? two characters. It may seem a strange digression for a man whose cafe-cum-restaurant empire encompasses 10 businesses, but he's serious enough about it that he has invested plenty of time and about $75,000 of his own money in it so far. He has developed the typography ? effectively an upper-case "T" and a lower-case "h" bunched together so they share the upright stem ? and an app that puts it in everyone's hand by allowing users to download an entirely new electronic keyboard complete not just with his symbol ? which he pronounces "th" ? but also a row of keys containing the? most frequently typed words in English. He states that this may not change the world but could be quite useful for people.? Mathis insists he doesn't see his app as a money-making venture. "Though I would like to recover the costs, if possible," he adds. But one of the issues he faces in getting past the Apple gatekeepers is that his app is essentially a modification of the keyboard component of the operating system ? and that is a big no-no in the Apple universe. Twitter too is critical of his invention.? Some critics say that he is attempting to trademark a symbol that has long been in use as part of the Serbian Cyrillic alphabet (pronounced "tshe", the letter represents the "ch" sound found in the word "chew"). Mathis concedes the likeness, but insists he was a long way down the road on his project before he became aware of it. "The Benedictine monks developed the modern version of the ampersand in the Middle Ages, when they were hand-copying religious texts," he says. "I'm not putting myself in the same league, but who knows ? maybe in 500 years' time people will be amazed that there was a time when we didn't use 'th'."According to Wikipedia, the 5 most commonly used words in English are, in descending order: the, be, to, of, & ?and. According to Guinness World records ? the fastest completion of a prescribed 160-character text message is 34.65 seconds achieved by Frode Ness (Norway) in Nov 2010.? The message sent was "The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human."? The fastest text message (SMS) using a touch-screen mobile phone is 20.53 seconds and was achieved by Mark Encarnaci?n (USA), outside the Microsoft Studios in Redmond, Washington, USA in ?2013.Tailpiece :? Pennsylvania AG To Refuse To Defend Ban On Gay Marriage ? But Will GOP Governor?

Pennsylvania?s Attorney General Kathleen Kane, a Democrat, is by all reports expected to refuse to defend her state?s ban on same-sex marriage in court. The move, similar to the Obama administration?s decision several years ago to not defend DOMA in court and California deciding to not defend Prop 8 in court ? which ultimately led to their demise at the Supreme Court last month ? likely will not have long-standing consequences.

That?s because Pennsylvania?s horrendous Republican Governor, Tom Corbett, likely will defend the ban in court.

Noting that ?Pennsylvania, the only state in the northeast without provisions for same-sex civil unions or marriages, was one of the first states with gay marriage bans targeted by a suit in the wake of the Supreme Court?s partial striking of the Defense of Marriage Act,? the Atlantic Wire reports an ACLU lawsuit ?filed late Tuesday, names both Corbett and Kane as defendants. Kane is scheduled to speak to reporters on Thursday afternoon, when, apparently, she?ll announce her decision regarding the suit.?

Corbett, who has been rated the most vulnerable incumbent governor in the country, is extremely disliked. Just consider this headline:

Gov. Tom Corbett (R-PA) Calls Pregnant Women and Breast Cancer Patients Healthcare Moochers

So, what do Republicans who are in trouble do? Move right.

In 2010, Corbett?s campaign website read: ?Tom Corbett supports the Pennsylvania Marriage Amendment Act, which defines marriage as that between a man and a woman.?

Don?t expect him to have evolved.

Explosion rocks Hezbollah stronghold in Lebanon

BEIRUT (AP) ? A large explosion rocked a stronghold of the Shiite militant Hezbollah group south of the Lebanese capital Tuesday, setting several cars on fire, sending a thick plume of black smoke billowing into the sky and wounding at least 18 people, security officials said.

The powerful blast in a bustling commercial and residential neighborhood came as many Lebanese Shiites began observing the holy month of Ramadan, and is the worst explosion to hit the area in years ? likely direct fallout of the civil war raging in neighboring Syria.

Groups of outraged Hezbollah supporters marched in the area after the blast, carrying pictures of Hezbollah chief Sheik Hassan Nasrallah and shouting slogans in support of their leader. Hezbollah operatives fired in the air to disperse people who attacked the interior minister with stones after he inspected the scene of the blast, trapping him for 45 minutes in a building before he was escorted through a backdoor.

With skirmishes between Shiites and Sunnis on the rise around the country, religiously mixed and dangerously fragile Lebanon is increasingly buffeted by powerful forces that are dividing the Arab world along sectarian lines. Some Syrian rebel groups, which are predominantly Sunni, have threatened to strike in Lebanon after Hezbollah joined Syrian President Bashar Assad's troops in their battle against opposition fighters.

"This is a message, but we will not bow," said Ziad Waked, a municipal official speaking to Hezbollah's Al-Manar television.

Tuesday's explosion struck the area of Beir el-Abed, and was most likely caused by a car bomb, officials said on condition of anonymity in line with regulations. They said the blast was in the parking near the Islamic Coop, a supermarket usually packed with shoppers, and a petrol station.

"I was riding my motorcycle on my way to a sweets shop and then there was this massive explosion that knocked me off and I fell on the ground," said a 52-year-old employee of a private company.

"At first I thought it was an earthquake," said the man who declined to be named out of security concerns. He said he was fasting on the first day of Ramadan and was on his way to shop for the evening meal that would break his daylong fast.

Al-Manar and security officials said 18 people were wounded. Red Cross head of operations George Kattaneh put the number at 37, saying they were all light injuries, many of them from breaking glass.

The area is near what is known as Hezbollah's "security square" where many of the party's officials live and have offices. Tuesday's explosion is one of the biggest in the area since the end of the country's 15-year civil war, which ended in 1990.

Television footage from the scene of the explosion revived memories of that conflict, when car bombs set by sectarian groups were common. There have been numerous car bombs targeting politicians and journalists since then, but random car bombs have been rare.

Hezbollah operatives in civilian clothes, some of them carrying Kalashnikov rifles, cordoned off the site of the explosion with yellow ribbons. They and Lebanese security officials barred journalists from approaching the site itself.

Ambulances and fire engines, their sirens wailing, raced to the area and witnesses said casualties were rushed to the nearby Bahman and Rasoul al-Atham hospitals. Immediately after the blast, people could be seen running in the street away from the site of the explosion which set several cars on fire.

The power of the explosion shattered windows and damaged several buildings in the busy residential and commercial area.

In May, two rockets slammed into a Hezbollah stronghold in south Beirut, wounding four people. The rockets struck hours after Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah vowed in a speech to help propel Assad to victory in Syria's civil war.

In June, a rocket slammed into the same area, causing no casualties.

Hezbollah has openly joined the fight in Syria, and the group's fighters were instrumental in a recent regime victory when government forces regained control of the strategic town of Qusair near the Lebanese border.

Lebanon's Sunni Muslims mostly back the overwhelmingly Sunni rebels in Syria, while many Shiites support Assad, who is a member of Syria's minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

"It is not a surprise for Dahyeh, the stronghold of resistance, to be targeted by such lowly, treacherous attacks that bear the fingerprints of the Israeli enemy and its tools," said Hezbollah lawmaker Ali Ammar, referring to the name by which the suburb south of Beirut is known.

Hezbollah, much like the Syrian regime, accuses Syrian rebels of being agents of the U.S. and Israel.

US-China cybersecurity talks: Will Snowden leaks thwart US goals?

Topping the US agenda for strategic and economic talks with China this week is cybersecurity. But since Obama and Xi met in California, Edward Snowden spilled the beans on US spying.

The Obama administration has a long agenda for this week?s US-China strategic and economic dialogue in Washington, but topping the list of US concerns is Chinese theft of intellectual property ? a practice President Obama believes could destroy the product innovation that is the core of American economic strength.

?It?s something the US side will focus on like a laser beam,? says Kenneth Lieberthal, a former National Security Council senior director for Asia and now a senior foreign policy fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington.

When Mr. Obama met with new Chinese President Xi Jinping in southern California last month, he explained at length how the hacking of US corporations to steal their industrial secrets and product innovations ?strikes right at the core of American economic interests,? Mr. Lieberthal says.

One result is that cybersecurity will be at the heart of two days of high-level ?dialogue? between the two global powers ? also the No. 1 and No. 2 economic powers ? beginning Wednesday morning. Demonstrating the importance of the issue to both sides, a new US-China cybersecurity working group had its inaugural meeting Monday as part of a run-up to this week?s annual dialogue.

A potential complication for US aims in this dialogue is the Edward Snowden affair, which burst onto the international stage since the Obama-Xi summit. The former NSA contractor?s revelations of US spying on Chinese institutions and hacking into Chinese databases could offer the Chinese with a convenient foil for deflecting the Obama administration?s cybertheft concerns, some experts in relations between the two countries say.

But senior administration officials insist the two issues are ?apples and oranges? and that the US will not allow questions of spying among international partners to be confused with the specific threat of economic damage from intellectual property theft.

It?s not clear the Chinese see things the same way, however. The Chinese state news agency Xinhua has called the US claim of cyber-victimization ?bizarre,? and last month declared that Mr. Snowden?s revelations about US hacking into Chinese companies and a university data base "demonstrate that the United States, which has long been trying to play innocent as a victim of cyberattacks, has turned out to be the biggest villain in our age."

Merkel defends NSA cooperation before minister flies to U.S.

BERLIN (Reuters) - Chancellor Angela Merkel has defended Germany's cooperation with U.S. intelligence, dismissing comparisons of its techniques to those used in communist East Germany in an attempt to ease tensions a day before talks on the thorny issue in Washington.

Just two months before an election, the German weekly Der Spiegel caused a furor with a weekend report that the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) worked closely with German spies.

The opposition has pressed Merkel on how much she knew about intrusive U.S. surveillance tactics, casting doubt on her apparent surprise. The chancellor has dispatched her interior minister to discuss the issue with officials in Washington.

In an interview with the weekly Die Zeit, Merkel said a certain level of cooperation was needed to ensure citizens' security.

"For decades, intelligence services have been working together under certain conditions that are tightly regulated in our country, and this serves our security," Merkel said.

Government snooping is a particularly sensitive topic in Germany due to heavy surveillance in communist East Germany and under Hitler's Nazis. If suspicions are raised that Merkel knew more about it than she has let on, it could become a hot election issue.

Merkel told Die Zeit there was a need to discuss the balance between privacy and security, but protection against terrorism was not possible without the option of electronic surveillance.

"(I want) the necessary discussions with the United States to be conducted in a spirit which, despite the many justified questions, never forgets that America has been our most loyal ally over the decades and still is," she said.

German Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich will meet President Barack Obama's adviser on homeland security and the U.S. justice minister on Thursday.

"I would like to make clear to our American partners how important it is to ensure things are proportionate in terms of the personal rights of our citizens," he said in a statement.

In addition to the controversy about the monitoring of private communications, Germany has demanded explanations of revelations by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden of large-scale spying by the NSA and by Britain on allies including Germany and other EU states.

Talks about the eavesdropping are taking place alongside transatlantic free trade talks starting this week.

Germany's intelligence agencies are coordinated by Merkel's office and overseen by a parliamentary committee whose deliberations are secret. The domestic spy agency has said it did not know about such extensive U.S. and British eavesdropping.

But the opposition insists that Merkel or her chief of staff Ronald Pofalla, who coordinates the secret services, must have known more.

Merkel rejected comparisons with the former German Democratic Republic, where she grew up.

"For me, there is no comparison at all between the state security (Stasi) of the GDR and the work of intelligence services in democratic states," Merkel told Die Zeit.

"These are completely different things and such comparisons only lead to a trivialization of what the state security did to people in East Germany," she said.

Capitol Hill food+drink | Sue set to neighbor Zoe in Oola complex ...

8444966408_da7471a228The man behind Lucky 8s China House isn?t going to let his space in the Oola Distillery complex stand empty for long.

With the ?American? Chinese food concept shuttering in May, founder Bracey Rogers is gearing up with a new group of partners to open a new venture in the space at 14th and Union.

Liquor license application filings reveal the name of a new lounge planned for the space ? Sue appears to be destined to replace Lucky 8s. The partnership behind the venture looks like mostly a new bunch of faces to Seattle food and drink. We?ve asked about more information on the plans for the venue but Rogers said it was too early to reveal the concept. Sue will neighbor Zoe for one bit of name game fun and is right around the corner from Chop Suey, for another.

We expect with the connection to the Oola HQ that we?ll also find plenty of Kirby Kallas-Lewis creations on the bar.

A month after its much anticipated opening, Capitol Cider has announced it is overhauling its kitchen and replacing Jordan Sinclair with former Smith and Bravehorse chef Nicholas Short:
  • This Thursday, the 11th of July, Capitol Cider will
celebrate its first month of business. We?ve seen the reviews on the
    internet and talked with many of our customers about their experiences;
as with most restaurants and bars, sometimes it takes a little while to
get the kinks ironed out. While we are doing our best to get everything
dialed in as quickly as possible, major overhauls are currently being
    implemented.

Nicholas Short is our new Chef (formerly of Smith & Brave Horse Tavern),
and has already been hard at work making the menu more compelling and
inspired. He is adding several more salads, flavorful vegetarian/vegan
dishes, and relying on sustainable meat, produce and seafood, including
Shellfish from Taylor Farms & sustainably-raised Hawaiian Kampachi. His
full new menu will be available no later than 7/24/2013.

Understanding that Seattle?s top food & beverage journalists have
patronized Capitol Cider, we sincerely hope you had an enjoyable
experience, but understand you may have been underwhelmed. Our goal is
to facilitate memorable experiences; with a new Chef and a redesigned
menu, are going to be a completely different restaurant. Thank you for
    your consideration.

NFL blackout rule: Richard Nixon hated it

By Brian Murphy, St. Paul Pioneer-Press

FILE -- This is a Sept. 20, 2009, file photo showing fans in Jacksonville Municipal Stadium stadium during an NFL football game between Arizona Cardinals and the Jacksonville Jaguars, in Jacksonville, Fla. So far, only Jacksonville has had its home opener blacked out last weekend. The Jaguars were so far from selling out that they didn't even bother requesting an extension. (Steve Cannon, Associated Press)

Football populist Richard Nixon was furious at the NFL and wanted to flex his political muscle to end television blackouts.

At 2:06 p.m. on Dec. 18, 1972, Nixon met with Attorney General Richard Kleindienst at the Executive Office Building and railed against the league's policy that prevented fans from watching their team's home playoff games on TV.

The 37th president of the United States wanted to intervene because the Washington Redskins-Green Bay Packers postseason game at RFK Stadium on Christmas Eve was going to be blacked out in Washington, D.C., even though it already was sold out.

In a conversation secretly recorded by the White House bugging system that helped doom his presidency, Nixon threatened to sue the league if it did not lift blackouts for the playoffs. The devout Redskins fan ordered Kleindienst to "get busy with your lawyers" and take the fight to NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle and Redskins owner Edward Bennett Williams.

The Pioneer Press downloaded the conversation from the National Archives.

"I think that's terrible," Nixon groused. "I think I might call them up and say, 'Put it on TV or I'll sue them all.' I'm all for it. I've said that several times."

"Do you want me to do it?" Kleindienst asked.

"Sure," said Nixon.

"I can scare the hell out of them," the attorney general said.

"As a matter of fact," the president continued, "Let's also remember that'll kick Edward Bennett Williams in the ass. He's the owner of the goddamn

team. Just say, 'Yes, the games should be on TV.' Take it into district court and ask for an injunction or something."

Listening to Nixon curse the NFL while carrying the flag for Joe Sixpack shows the leader of the free world wielding power six weeks after his landslide re-election over George McGovern, just as the Watergate scandal was about to engulf his administration.

From 1961-72, all NFL home games were blacked out within a 75-mile radius of a home team's market regardless of whether it was sold out.

As the 1972 postseason began, Nixon was miffed his local constituents could not watch their Redskins, who eventually advanced to Super Bowl VII. And he happened to have the country's highest-ranking law enforcement official at his disposal.

"I think it's a bad policy," Nixon told Kleindienst, according to the scratchy recording. "Listen, get the whole bunch, get the whole country riled up. That's my point. Why just make it a Washington story?"

"And limit it to the playoffs?" Kleindienst asks.

"You should say that the president said this. You should call Pete Rozelle ... (and say) that I believe the National Football League should announce that all playoff (games) should be carried in public. Period," Nixon said.

"You might also point out, just so you understand, too, Bennett, the president is not speaking for himself in this instance because he's going to be in Florida. He's going to be watching the game in Florida. It's going to be carried there. But he's speaking for all the people in Washington who didn't vote for him. Put it right that way."

The two men can be heard laughing. Nixon had won 49 states in the election but lost the District of Columbia vote to McGovern.

Later that week, Kleindienst met with Rozelle. The attorney general offered White House protection from Congress mandating the NFL televise all regular-season games in home markets in exchange for the league immediately lifting playoff blackouts. But the commissioner was not interested, according to Joe Browne, who was one of the Rozelle's most trusted advisors.

"Pete told him, 'Thanks, but no thanks,' " Browne recalled last month in an email to the Pioneer Press.

Playoff teams sometimes had less than a week to sell tickets, and owners were concerned then that playoff games would be played and televised in half-empty stadiums without blackouts to drive sales.

What's more, Rozelle liked what he was hearing in Congress, where he had a key ally in U.S. Rep. Jack Kemp, the New York Republican and former Buffalo Bills star quarterback. A compromise was reached allowing blackouts if any game was not sold out within 72 hours of kickoff.

"Peter wasn't certain the White House down the road could withstand Congressional and public pressure regarding regular-season games if playoff games started to be televised," said Browne, now a senior adviser to Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Nixon signed the blackout law before the 1973 season.

The league adopted the 72-hour rule even after the law expired in 1975, and the Federal Communications Commission continues to enforce it.

Today, the 40-year-old policy is under assault in Washington.

A sports fans lobbying group has petitioned the FCC to rescind the blackout policy. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., has proposed legislation to ban blackouts in markets that have received public financing for stadium construction.

Sun Jul 07 '13 Announcement from CommBadge: 'Star Trek' Inspired Communicator for iPhone & Android

Dear CommBadge Supporters;

We are happy to say that we have been making really great progress. Again, we extend our sincere apologies for the shipping delays. We can finally see the production-light at the end of the tunnel! Here?s the latest updates;

Firmware

Our firmware is 98% complete, we?ve been testing it for a couple of months and have ironed out most of the issues. Last week we began our first testing with iOS 7 beta 1. Apple implemented some new Bluetooth protocols in iOS 7 that will allow us to do some really awesome new things, such as access to Notification Center. We will keep you posted on this in a future update.

PCB

The PCB layout is complete! The next step is testing a dozen or so prototypes. We hope to have these prototypes in hand by the end of this month. After that, it?s time for full production.

Assembly

We had to make a small redesign on one of the plastic casing components. While this was a slight timeline setback, we were able to shed another 0.5mm from the overall thickness of all CommBadge models. We know it?s not much, but it shows our commitment to bring you only the very best product we can possibly build.

The sense of production excitement at team CommBadge is growing steadily now, day by day. We hope you will start to feel, like we can, that we are truly making progress and moving very close to production and fulfillment.

Just as a reminder, if you have a change of address you will still be given a chance to update your information after we officially announce the shipping timeline. Again, we thank everyone for their patience and support!

Best regards,
The CommBadge Team

How to Install Google Analytics Tracking into a WordPress Web Site

This is a follow up article for the how do I start a successful blog series that we have been publishing on this site to help users get started and create a successful blog.

Google Analytics (GA) is the de facto standard for tracking the statistics for properties on the web. It is free to use and is constantly being improved upon. It ties into many of the Google accounts that marketers and web masters use which includes Google AdWords and Google Webmaster Tools.

The reports in GA will let you know what pages on your web site get the most (and least) traffic and how the traffic reached the pages. You can learn the referring URL for the traffic, meaning what web site (if any) contained the link that lead to the page on your site. If the referring site was a search engine, a lot of times you can learn the keyword that was used to find your listing in the search results. When setup correctly it can also differentiate between organic and paid traffic.

More than the above, you can also learn the geographic location of your visitors, and the path they took through your site. And also when setup correctly, and if you know where to look in the reports, you can also learn the link the visitor took to leave your site. If the link is an outgoing affiliate referral link, you can tie an organic search visitor to an affiliate sale, for example.

You can get very deep into the analysis of your web site when Google Analytics is installed, especially when leveraging the extra features like outbound clicks, paid referrals, social traffic, etc, but the important thing first is to start tracking the data. You can analyze it later on. So, from day one you should be collecting data.

This requires a JavaScript by Google that is setup for a particular web property to be placed on every page of a web site. Fortunately this is very simple to do in WordPress since it is a templated system. What that means is that you can paste the code into just one template file and it will be used on every page of the site. Better yet, you can also ?inject? the code on-the-fly rather than modify any template files. Plugins, custom fucntions, and theme settings can be used to accomplish that.

Installing Google Analytics

I will show you a few different methods that you can use to add Google analytics to your WordPress site.

Method 1) Add Google Analytics to a WordPress Template File

As pointed out above, you can add the GA code to a template file in the theme. This is relatively simple but it?s not the most desired method. Consider this: you have a theme installed that has one-click updates when a new version comes out. The new version may have updates for features, bugs, and/or security issues. You could manually make the updates to one or more files to apply the updates, but it is much simpler to use the one-click update.

If you make any manual changes to your theme, they will be overwritten by the update and have to be redone manually. This clearly isn?t ideal, but it is still common practice so I cover it in the video. If this is the route you want to take, once you get the GA tracking code, find the header.php template file and paste the code just below the opening ?body? tag.

1. Go to Appearance >> Editor.

2. Under Templates on the right side, locate and click on the Header (header.php) file.

Note: Be sure you have a backup copy of that file in case something goes awry. You can copy it to your computer through FTP or File Manager. You can also copy and paste the content into an empty file, but if the site goes down as a result of the change, you will need to have your FTP software handy for uploading the backup file.

3. In the code locate the ?body? HTML tag:

4. Paste the full GA code just below that.

5. Click the Update File button.

Method 2) Create a Custom WordPress Function to Install Google Analytics

A better way, if you have the know how is to create a custom function to install the Analytics code. There is usually a Theme Functions (functions.php) file that comes with a theme. It depends on the theme developer whether this file suffers the same issues as the Header (or other) file when updating. A lot of the time this is set aside for custom functions by the user (us) and not be overwritten during a theme update. You can?t count on that however. I won?t cover it here but creating your own custom plugin might be better.

Here?s how to add a function to install the GA code to WordPress:

1. Go to Appearance >> Editor.

2. Under Templates on the right side, locate and click on the Theme Functions (functions.php) file.

3. Add the code below to the file.

Now, there may be a placeholder for custom functions, there may not. If there are existing functions, it is safe to assume this file will be overwritten when an upgrade occurs. Just keep a backup of your functions and make it a habit to manually add them back in after a theme update. It?s easier to manually update a functions file than any other, since there is specific placement usually for the other files.

If there are no php tags you will need to add them. I won?t cover that here. If there is existing code in there, there will be existing php tags. Near the bottom of the file you should see a ? then the ?greater than? symbol. Include your function just before that spot.

Finally, the code:

add_action('wp_footer', 'custom_ga1');

 function custom_ga1() {
     echo "REPLACE-WITH-GA-CODE";
 }

In the above code, I created a function called ?custom_ga1? for lack of a better name. It?s important that function name is unique from WordPress functions, and functions of other themes and other plugins. If you replace the name be sure to replace it in both spots. I like to use the site name that I am working on as the prefix, and a meaningful name for the suffix. You can leave it as is and feel safe because there is very little chance of it causing any conflicts.

Of course, replace REPLACE-WITH-GA-CODE with your actual Google Analytics code. It?s important the code is wrapped in double quotes as is shown. This code with place the GA code in the footer of the site.

Method 3) Using a Plugin or Theme to Place the GA Tracking Code

A lot of times, especially these days, the Theme Options panel will have a spot to place tracking code scripts. If that?s the case, all you have to do is paste your Analytics code in there. Then there is no need to execute a custom function because the theme does it for you. Look around for a theme options page either under the Appearance menu or under a new menu option that matches the name of your theme.

You can also use a plugin to handle the process for you. This might be the ideal solution for most for a few reasons:

If you find a plugin from a great developer:

- You will only have to add your GA Property ID and it will fill in the rest of the code. That way, if there are changes to the GA script in the future, an update to the plugin will take care of that.

- It might turn on extra features like tracking outbound clicks.

- It should be a light-weight, cleanly coded plugin that won?t bog down your web site.

- It will make it super easy to install the GA code without having to muck around with template files and custom functions.

This plugin here by Yoast fits the bill. You still have to create a web property in your Google Analytics account (the steps are below) but the rest is very easy.

In fact, there is an option to let the plugin authenticate with your GA account so that you can choose the web property from a list. But you can also manually paste in your property ID (not the GA code, just the property ID).

It also lets you track outbound links and some other stats that may or may not be relevant to you. I like also how it lets you pick where you want the code to be placed. It will insert it in the header by default but doesn?t force that setting on you. I demonstrate its use in the video embedded into this article.

Quick Steps for Adding a Web Site to a Google Analytics Account

With the host of options for installing the GA code into our WordPress blog behind us, let?s finally have a look at how to get the code to be placed.

The first step of course is to get a Google account and login to it. If you don?t have one, just bite the bullet and get a Gmail account. This will be handy for setting up lots of useful accounts. You can still attach your own domain to your Gmail account so no-one has to know you are using a web based Google email address. There is a free way if you can still find the loophole, but it doesn?t cost a lot to set it up if you go the paid route.

At any rate, once you have a Google account and are logged in, follow these steps:

1. Visit google.com/analytics

2. Click Sign in (top right).

3. Click Admin (top right).

4. Click +New Account.

5. Fill in all fields, then click Get Tracking ID.

You will then be presented with the Property ID and the Google Analytics tracking code. Choose the appropriate one depending on which method you plan to use for adding the code to your WordPress site. It?s mostly just the plugins that will require just the Property ID, while most other methods will require the full Google Analytics code.

Le Music-Hall de la Baronne kicks off Montr?al Compl?tement Cirque

MONTREAL ? Wednesday was red carpet night for the grand opening of the fourth edition of Montr?al Compl?tement Cirque, a celebration of all things circus ? often mixed up with other performing arts.

The kickoff production of Le Music-Hall de la Baronne at L?Olympia is a hybrid show that blends singing, dancing, comedy and slick circus acts within a cabaret format that includes a generous amount of audience participation.

Its creation team, headed by Cirque ?loize artistic director Jeannot Painchaud, includes stage director Denis Bouchard, three choreographers (Cynthia Akanga, Johanne Madore and Olivier Loubry), a musical director (Jean Fernand Girard) and a designer (Marianne Forand) who was responsible for set, props and style.

Although Le Music-Hall de la Baronne is being presented as part of Cirque ?loize?s 20th anniversary celebrations, this is not a typical, fully realized ?loize show by any means.

La Baronne, played by the formidable Catherine Pinard who is strong of voice and looks very diva, introduces herself as the proprietor of the club. Her niece (Genevi?ve Baudet) is the highly incompetent waitress who never delivers a drink intact. And Renaud Paradis plays Monsieur Renard, the highly versatile, song-and-dance emcee.

The audience is seated at tables surrounding a small circular stage connected by a ramp to the theatre?s actual proscenium stage, which is used, minimally, for performance, too. But tables full of spectators take up most of the upstage space.

There?s a small, quirky orchestra on the main stage, too, but many acts use their own taped soundtracks.

While Bouchard and actor Remy Girard are credited with the concept and writing of the piece, the script is largely between-acts patter replete with silly jokes.

Circus highlights of the evening include an aerial rings performance by Austrian Christine Gruber, vamping Greta Garbo and smoking a cigarette. Cuban juggler Rony Gomez combines speed and deft, sexy moves as he keeps several balls aloft, and Quebecer Fr?d?ric Lemieux-Cormier, who tears off his shirt and tosses it into the audience during his German Wheel act, captures attention.

American acrobat Michael Lanphear arises from a sofa, freeing himself from a woman?s arms (Camille Tremblay), and grasps hanging straps that allow him to soar high while doing various twists and turns to a moody Jacques Brel soundtrack.

The man that Estonian performer Katerina Reponnen recruits from the audience to help her out while she juggles large white cylinders with her feet turns out to be her partner (Pasi Nousiainen). But truly innocent bystanders are dragged onto stage for other purposes. Latecomers get treated like VIPs, ushered up to the front and served champagne. (Shy people are advised to select their seats carefully and arrive on time.)

Generally speaking, the circus acts are strong, the comedy mildly amusing, with the second act?s lion-cage number landing distinctly lame. The ambience, however, is deliciously retro decadent. And Paradis leads a rhythmic gum boots participation number that turns out to be a good time had by all.

MMA Marketplace: UFC 162 walkout shirt battle

Let's break down the UFC 162 main event in the most important way possible -- the walkout shirts. Anderson Silva will put his belt on the line against Chris Weidman. Who has the better shirt?

Silva's shirt by Nike took as little imagination as possible. Weidman's Bad Boy shirt makes me think somebody's watching me. The price is only a $5 difference between the two. The result? A draw. Neither shirt jumps out as the clear-cut winner.

Egypt Islamist party says Mursi must give ground

By Tom Perry

CAIRO (Reuters) - The leader of Egypt's Islamist Nour party urged his sometime ally President Mohamed Mursi to make concessions to avert bloodshed and presented himself on Sunday as a mediator with protesters on the streets.

Mursi's opponents staged the biggest rallies since the downfall of dictator Hosni Mubarak on Sunday to demand the resignation of Mursi a year after he took office.

Younis Makhyoun, whose ultra-Orthodox Islamic Nour Party helped Mursi wield power but has since distanced itself from Islamist factions rallying round him, told Reuters protesters were "wrong" to try to topple Egypt's first elected leader. But he said Mursi could still be brought down unless he compromises.

"There must be concessions, even if they are difficult and bitter, to safeguard the blood of Egyptians," Makhyoun said in a rare interview. "We are worried about an escalation that will be hard to control, and that guns will have the loudest voice."

Mursi could no longer simply ride out protests as he has in the past, Makhyoun said, floating the suggestion that Mursi might be forced to hold referendum on staying in office.

"The president is banking on the idea that this will be a mass protest, like the other protests, and there will be some losses, and then things will settle down," Makhyoun said.

"But this time matters are different." He added: "We don't want to survive this crisis, we want to solve it."

He suggested his own party, which took more than a fifth of parliament seats 18 months ago, could act as mediators: "We have bridged open to all the people".

Nour is the biggest Islamist group after the Brotherhood. It emerged following the 2011 uprising and came second to the Brotherhood in parliamentary elections held later that year. Following Mursi's win, Nour cooperated with the Brotherhood in fast-tracking into law a controversial constitution last year.

But Nour has distanced itself from the Brotherhood this year, joining the critics who accuse Mursi and his movement of seeking to dominate public life. Nour has taken a neutral position in the run-up to the rallies called by Mursi's supporters and opponents, refusing to take part in either.

"NO VISION"

Makhyoun said the Nour Party had met Mursi together with other Islamist parties two days ago, but the president had shown "no vision" in the discussions.

Makhyoun, a 58-year-old dentist, also had harsh words for the loose alliance of liberal and leftists parties known as the National Salvation Front. He said they too were stubborn.

"They are good at talking behind microphones and are trying to ride the wave of anger," Makhyoun said. "They do not represent the Egyptian people."

Outlining one possible way out, Makhyoun said Mursi should call opposition groups for talks to pick a new prime minister who would form a technocratic government to run parliamentary elections, a proposal that has been made in the past.

But he added it may be too late, as the opposition had escalated its demand to insist on early presidential polls.

"What I am afraid of is that the army will be forced to intervene in political life if the country slides into a civil war or anarchy," he said. "If we reach the stage where we are facing a choice of civil war or the army, it is natural, of course, to say 'Yes' to the army."

While Nour has distanced itself from Mursi, other religious groups have drawn closer to the president and the Brotherhood, including the once-armed al-Gamaa al-Islamiya. Makhyoun criticized recent rallies called by the Brotherhood during which one hardline cleric described Mursi's opponents as "infidels".

"This is one of the scandalous mistakes that Dr. Mursi made in the last period," Makhyoun said.

He added: "We are accused by some of the Islamist parties of dividing the Islamic camp, and being against the Islamic project. That is totally untrue. In our opinion, it is what is happening now that is weakening the Islamic project."

Ecuador flower growers in Snowden shock

(AP) ? Gino Descalzi used to fret about things like aphids, mildew and the high cost of shipping millions of roses a year from Ecuador to florists in the United States. These days he's worried about a 30-year-old former spy stuck thought to be in the transit area of the Moscow airport, and he can't believe it.

The Obama administration sent a thinly veiled economic threat to this South American country on Thursday when it indefinitely delayed a decision to eliminate tariffs on imports of roses worth about $250 million a year. The move created leverage over the leftist government seen as likeliest to grant National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden political asylum that would protect him from U.S. criminal charges.

A week after Snowden began his stuttering, surreal flight across the globe, every passing day without him making progress toward Ecuadorean asylum makes the prospect look less likely. But the men who grow roses, asters and delphinia in the thin air of Ecuador's sun-soaked highlands are deeply concerned that, whatever happens to Snowden, they may turn out to be the most unlikely collateral damage from the geopolitical wrangle over his fate.

"This totally changes the financial panorama for our businesses and seriously affects the structure of our markets," said Descalzi, whose 280 employees produce some 22 million roses a year. "We're just shocked that an event so far from the political and economic life of Ecuador has caused so much commotion and worry."

The rose benefit for Ecuador had been widely expected to be approved. Any delay, they say, puts it into uncomfortably uncertain territory.

Even if Snowden never touches Ecuadorean soil and the U.S. cuts the 6.8 percent tariff on Ecuadorean roses, along with tariffs on frozen broccoli and canned artichokes, Ecuadorean flower growers are worried that the brouhaha has damaged Ecuador in the eyes of the United States, hurting its reputation for stability and reliability among the buyers who must decide between flowers from Ecuador and the already tariff-free blooms from its nearby market-dominant competitor, Colombia.

"This is not a mathematical equation," said Benito Jaramillo, the head of the Ecuadorean flower-growers' association. The graduate of Texas A&M and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign employs hundreds of people growing "summer flowers" ? a category of less-flashy blooms like hydrangeas and asters ? on his farm about a half-hour from the capital, Quito.

"The point is that there are a lot of other factors that damage our industry's image and competitiveness in the mid-term," Jaramillo said.

Flowers are serious business in Ecuador.

The industry says it employs about 50,000 people on about 550 farms across the country and is indirectly responsible for 110,000 jobs, putting it after only oil, seafood and bananas in the ranks of the country's biggest exporters. It boasts that the long days, rich sunlight and cool nights of the Andean highlands mean the heads of flowers, particularly roses, grow fuller and richer than those from Colombia, which they scoff at as more suitable for grocery stores than florists.

Industry representatives spent around a year campaigning hard in Washington for the inclusion of cut roses under the Generalized System of Preferences, or GSP, a mechanism meant to encourage development in lower-income countries. A broader trade pact that covers a wide range of Ecuadorean products, the Andean Trade Preference Act, had been widely expected to expire next month. That now seems certain, not least because Ecuador declared Thursday that it was preemptively rejecting it.

Now, the flower industry has turned its focus to its own government, which it desperately hopes won't offer asylum to Snowden.

A small group of U.S. senators explicitly threatened trade retaliation if Ecuador harbors Snowden. And on Saturday, Vice President Joe Biden asked Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa to turn down any asylum request.

"We can't put the interests of 14 million Ecuadoreans at risk because of a 29-year-old hacker whom we don't even know," Descalzi said. "This gentleman doesn't mean anything to us."

The business impacts of the Snowden affair have infuriated Ecuador's main business groups, who accuse the government of putting ideology before commerce.

The decision to renounce the Andean Trade deal was "permeated by political and ideological motives," said Roberto Aspiazu, chairman of a coalition of Ecuador's largest industries. The country's business sector is calling on the government to manage the relationship with the United States "with the utmost care," he said.

The government said it planned to compensate business damaged by the loss of U.S. tariff benefits and has painted its decision in terms of the nation's sovereignty versus U.S. threats.

"But in any case, now they're wanting to destroy Ecuador for receiving an asylum application from Mr. Snowden and they are pulling out the rubbish that we spy as well," President Correa said. "If you behave badly we will take (the trade deal) away from you. Well, here you have the sovereign response from Ecuador, my comrades."

But business groups warned that any government compensation could be interpreted as a subsidy subject to international litigation.

When asked how he feels about the whole situation, Jaramillo, the head of the flower association, thought before responding with a single word: "frustrated."

"One isolated issue shouldn't create so much damage," he said.
