Bill Gates? Scholars Program Giving Away One Thousand Scholarships For Minority Students
From Blacknews.com ? October 11, 2012

?? Applications Now Available For 2013 Scholarships ?

(Nationwide) ? Every year, the Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program selects 1,000 talented students to receive a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice. The program provides scholars with personal and professional development through our leadership programs along with academic support throughout their college career.

Administered by the United Negro College Fund, the program was initially funded by a $1 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Since 1999, it has funded the education of more than 16,000 students, awarding them more than $614 million dollars to pay for tuition, fees, books and housing.

The program aims to reduce financial barriers for African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American and Hispanic American students with high academic and leadership promise who have significant financial need; increase the representation of these target groups in the disciplines of computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health and the sciences, where these groups are severely underrepresented; develop a diversified cadre of future leaders for America by facilitating successful completion of bachelor?s, master?s and doctoral degrees; and provide seamless support from undergraduate through doctoral programs, for students selected as Gates Millennium Scholars entering target disciplines.

Individuals selected as Gates Scholars will receive funds in an amount to be determined based on their financial need. The amount determined will be based on the cost of tuition, fees, books and living expenses for the 2013-2014 academic year, as well as the availability of grants and other scholarships reported on the financial aid award letter. The average scholarship award in the 2000-2010 academic years was $11,000 per student.

The application process is a three-part effort: 1) a Student Application is completed and submitted by the student; 2) a Nominator Form must be completed and submitted by an educator- Principal, teacher, guidance counselor or higher education representative; 3) a Recommender Form must be completed and submitted by any adult who is familiar with the student?s community service and leadership activities, such as a supervisor at work or a community leader.

The deadline for submission is January 16, 2013.

11 iPhone Apps to Strength Train and Lift Smarter | Greatist

11 iPhone Apps to Strength Train and Lift Smarter

Frankly, the science behind gaining muscle isn?t very difficult; it mostly comes down to loading up the bar, and then loading up the fork. That?s not to say it doesn?t take discipline and commitment. That?s why any help we can get is appreciated. So if the math is so simple, why do so many fitness apps sport more features than a Japanese toilet? All those gizmos and gadgets can be more hindrance than help.

Greatist has rounded up 11 of the best strength training apps to lift smarter (all at least available on iPhone; Androids never fear, there are options here, too!). These apps will help anyone work out right, eat better, rest up, and track the whole thing, all on a mobile device. Read on to find out how!

Getting Stronger

Time in the gym should be time spent working, not futzing with a phone. Skip the complex apps with tons of preloaded workouts by who-only-knows and walk in the gym with a plan from a trustworthy source, and pared down apps like:

Pumping Weight
Pumping Weight

Pumping Weight

Aside from being devastatingly handsome, this simple guy sports some nifty features, like automatically recording rest periods. That?s helpful for judging the intensity of a particular session (plus it fosters a beat-the-clock kind of focus). Although Pumping Weight does a fantastic job of recording and visually charting progress with everything from weights to intervals, it isn?t entirely intuitive. Sacrifice 10 minutes learning its ins-and-outs and Pumping Weight will become an indispensable training tool.
Details: Cost: $2.99. Available for iOS.

Gym Buddy

Gym Buddy is ugly. Very ugly. But it makes up for aesthetics with no-nonsense functionality that?s great for serious lifters. Take, for example, the swipe-through interface that makes tracking supersets super simple, plus it?s one of the few apps that can juggle multiple lifting programs. (Pro Tip: track more than 150 workouts and the app starts to lag, annoyingly.) The preset timers only offer 30, 60, and 120 second rest periods but they do count down to an audible boxing bell cue, which is embarrassingly motivational ? cue the Rocky montage!
Details: Cost: $2.99. Available for iOS.

Gym Hero

A lesson in simplicity, this app is little more than a digital notebook.?It can hold multiple programs and backs up automatically to the web, but for anything else ? timers, instruction, the ability to track cardio ? look elsewhere.
Details: Cost: Free. Available for iOS.

StrongLifts 5?5

This is an intuitive and well designed app that automates the super-popular StrongLifts 5?5 program. It can figure out ideal weights, tracking progress, and even deloading folks automatically when they plateau ? but that?s all it does.?There?s no room for tracking cardio or accessory work. Basically it?s all about drinking the ?5 exercise, 5 set, 5 rep? Kool-Aid, or find a supplemental journaling app (Gym Hero, for example).
Details: Cost: Free. Available for iOS.

Digital Diets for Real Life Muscles

Livestrong MyPlate Calorie Tracker

Livestrong MyPlate Calorie Tracker

A huge part of strength training, whether it be dropping fat or adding muscle, is going to come down to what goes into the tank, but keeping nutrition on point during the 160+ hours not spent grunting and grinding out reps can be harder than the actual workout.?Food diaries can make monitoring calorie (and protein) intake considerably easier. It?s vital, however, to pick a good one like these:

MyNetDiary

Powerful and simple, MyNetDiary addresses the two biggest problems the trackers below have: It offers a decent portfolio of foods available offline, but MyNetDiary also comes with access to an online database that rivals the best resources out there. The app also includes a handy barcode scanner (though it?s really only useful in the paid version), and even a built in ?Before & After? feature for taking selfies, which may sound silly, but let?s be honest ? vanity is a heck of a motivator.
Details: Cost: Free, or $3.99 for the Pro Version (recommended). Available for iOS, Android, and Blackberry.

Tap & Track

The fact this guy works offline is huge (especially in New York, where subway rides are the perfect time to figure out what Apollo Ono?s fave foods really do to a diet). Tap & Track also allows for macro targets (protein, carbs and fat) for the day, which is a basic feature most trackers lack. While it?s incredibly intuitive, searching the database can get frustrating (Pop Chips? No results. Popchips? Oh, there we go!) especially since it?s probably somewhere in Tap & Track?s well-appointed database.
Details: Cost: $3.99. Available for iOS.

Livestrong?s MyPlate Calorie Tracker

Livestrong?s huge user base makes its roster of eats one of the best in the business (banh m? for lunch? BAM! There?re 30 options where most trackers have none). Don?t underestimate the importance of a good database, because really, who is going to spend five minutes entering the breakdown manually??That said, Livestrong?s Achilles? heel is its reliance on the Internet. It may spare space on phones, but for anyone with slow (or no) service tracking, using MyPlate can become a trying experience.
Details: Cost: $2.99. Available for iOS, Android, most Blackberry devices (see app store for details), and Window?s Phone.

Make Sure to Rest

sleep cycle app

Sleep Cycle

Sleep, along with training intelligently and eating well, is a key cog in any strength plan: get too little and the deficit will show in the gym. Plus it can lead to overtraining. While these apps have even greater limitations than their pricier brethren, for people who chronically miss out on the Zzz?s they can be useful to identify underlying problems so insomnia doesn?t have to be taken lying down (*groan*).

Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock

Sleep Cycle attempts to wake users during the lightest stages of their sleep cycle so they awake feeling more refreshed. To pull off this feat the app has users pick a timeframe in which they need to rise, then sleep with their phones in the bed so it can use the accelerometer to sense tossing and turning in the night. The app boasts that it was once the top paid app in nine countries, which is a testament to how useful many have found it. For the most part, I found it seemed to always go off at the earliest possible moment.
Details: Cost: $0.99. Available for iOS.

EasyWakeup Pro

While largely interchangeable with the above app, this slightly more expensive option also seemed to measure depth of sleep more reliably, which could be valuable to someone who?s trying to understand their sleep patterns better. However, even with this additional sensitivity, the alarm still seems to go off at the beginning of the designated wake-up window.
Details: $4.99. Available for iOS.

Track Your Progress

gametrac app

Game Trac

Working out? Check. Eating better? Check. Resting right? Check. Now all that?s left is to make sure all that hard work is turning into real results. These apps will help chart a user?s progress and stay on top of those strength training goals (we might even bust a plateau or two).

fitnessMeter

For anyone who?s looking to add strength for functional reasons, being able to measure how weight room accomplishments translate into real world gains, fitnessMeter?s an awesome tool. Using the phone?s camera the app can automatically time suicides, sprints (though it?s only helpful if they?re under 20 meters), and measure vertical leap. While all of these would admittedly be more accurately measured by a real-life person, fitnessMeter frees you from the need to drag a friend to the track every day.
Details Cost: $1.99. Available for iOS.

GameTrac

For anyone who plays sports, this simple app is a great way to quantify in-game performance. That could be a major help in figuring out if all that time under the bar is paying off. GameTrac makes managing the stats of one person, or an entire team (including wins and losses), incredibly easy ? it even offers to populate teams using contacts found on the phone. Most major sports come preloaded, but everyting from the games to the actual states are customizable. Just don?t underestimate a stat sheet?s ability to heat up a friendly game of hoops.
Details: Cost: Free. Available for iOS.

Wild boar attacks and injures 4 people in Berlin

(AP) ? Berlin authorities say they shot and killed a 120 kilogram (265-pound) wild boar after it attacked and injured four people including a police officer in a residential neighborhood.

Police said Tuesday the boar bit a 74-year-old man on the back and leg, and knocked a 74-year-old woman to the ground and injured her hip on Monday afternoon in the Charlottenburg area of the capital. It also bit a 24-year-old woman before she climbed aboard a parked car to safety. All three were treated in a hospital.

Police say when a police officer arrived, the boar attacked him and cut his leg before he pulled his gun and killed the animal with "multiple shots."

Wild boars are relatively common in green Berlin, though rarely cause problems beyond digging up gardens.

ConEd warns lower Manhattan customers of possible power outages

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Consolidated Edison Inc, the New York City power provider, warned customers in lower Manhattan it may shut down power on Monday evening as Hurricane Sandy barrels toward the East Coast.

Blackouts could affect streets as far north as 36th Street, the company said in a release, though would likely be limited to those avenues closest to the East and Hudson rivers. The central avenues are not expected to be affected.

"We have contacted customers on the southern tip of Manhattan and on the lower sections of the Hudson and East River," Con Edison spokesman Alfonso Quiroz told Reuters, saying the firm's automated calling system had placed calls to homeowners and businesses in the affected area.

The company said in a release it provided the same message to certain customers in flood-prone areas of Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx.

Quiroz said the company would make a final decision at about 8 pm EDT when the tide approaches its highest point.

Con Edison said 71,500 homes and businesses were already without power in New York City and Westchester County primarily due to Sandy's high winds.

The company said all streets in New York City's evacuation zone around Battery Park City on Manhattan's southern tip would be affected by the potential blackout, as well as some on the east and west of the island serviced by the same electrical networks.

The shutdown would be a precautionary measure to avoid water damage to the utility's equipment in the event of a major storm surge. Seawater can damage underground electrical equipment. Shutting the equipment down can help to limit the damage.

Quiroz said it would allow the company to restore power faster after the storm.

"A lot depends on the severity of the storm," Quiroz said.

"We wanted to let people know in and around these areas that there may be disruption to their service."

Sony goes Redhunting with PMWF55 and PMWF5 pro CineAlta 4K Super 35mm sensor camcorders

Having seen some of its high-end cinema camera thunder stolen by the likes of Red and Arri, Sony has just launched a pair of CineAlta PL-mount cameras with brand new Super 35mm sensors: The PMW-F5 and PMW-F55. Though both pack 4K CMOS imagers, the similarities grind to a halt there -- the higher-end PMW-F55 has a global shutter, wider color gamut and can output 4k along with 2k and HD video, while the PMW-F5 is a strictly 2k and HD model with a rolling shutter. Depending on the level of quality you want, there are several ways to capture video to each camcorder. MPEG-4 H.264 video or Sony's SR MPEG-4 SStP can be recorded onto Sony's new SxS PRO+ media, or if RAW quality is desired, there's the new AXS-R5 Access Memory System for 2K / 4K RAW capture -- which will also work with the current NEX-FS700. Using the latter system, the PMW-F5 is capable of grabbing up to 120fps slow motion RAW HD video, while the PMW-F55 can capture 240fps at 2k, putting it squarely in Epic-X territory. The new camcorders will arrive in February 2013, and while Sony hasn't outed pricing yet, it'll likely be well under the flagship 4k CineAlta F65's formidable $65k sticker. Check the PR after the break to get the entire technical skinny.

Effective Sugar-Free Diet Plan For Health - Ayushveda

Rating: 5.0/5 (1 vote cast)

Sugar-Free Diet Plan For HealthExcess sugar consumption is often the reason for several health conditions such as obesity and heart disease. Refined sugars are known to be fast-digesting carbohydrates, which are converted quickly to fat; whereas, complex carbohydrates digest slowly and provide you with a consistent source of energy. Therefore, it is important that you limit the amount of sugar in your diet. Given below is an effective sugar free diet plan.

Sugar-Free Diet Plan

Include Vegetables

Vegetables are excellent for those who suffer from high blood sugar as they are sugar-free. They possess high amounts of complex carbohydrates and fibre, which are beneficial for health. It is advisable that you cook vegetables at home and avoid purchasing packaged food products as they often contain added sugars.

Sugar-Free Diet Plan

Vegetables that are sugar-free include spinach, kale, collard greens, tomato, onion, asparagus, broccoli and yam. It is advisable that you include vegetables at every meal as they also contain high amounts of fibre and water, thereby preventing binge eating.

Include Meat and Dairy Products

Meat is considered an excellent food for those who want to reduce the amount of sugar in their diet. This is because meat possesses no refined sugar and provides you with the essential amino acids as well as vitamins and minerals required for good health.

Chicken breast, fish, lean beef and turkey are excellent sources of animal protein that are sugar-free. Dairy products are also sugar-free and good for individuals suffering from diabetes. However, it is important that you purchase only unflavoured dairy products, which do not contain any added sugar.

Best dairy products that do contain refined sugars include yogurt, cottage cheese and milk. You could also add berries or any other fruit to yogurt for added flavour.

Include Fruits and Whole Grains

Fruits are one of the best foods for those suffering from high blood sugar as they do not contain any added sugar. Fruits are known to possess complex carbohydrates, which digest very slowly and are good for diabetics. Fruits that do not contain refined sugar include blueberries, grapes, kiwi, raspberries, strawberries, banana, mango and apricots.

Diet Plan For Health

You should avoid purchasing packaged fruit juices as they contain high amounts of added sugars. Instead, you should drink fruit juice prepared at home by juicing the whole fruit itself. Whole grains are also considered sugar-free and contain high amounts of complex carbohydrates.

In addition to complex carbohydrates, whole grains also possess good amounts of fibre, which help in digestion. Sugar-free whole grains include oats, bran, wheat, brown rice and millet.

Include Legumes

Legumes are considered excellent for those on a sugar-free diet. This is due to the fact that legumes possess negligible amounts of refined sugar. In addition to that, they contain high amounts of complex carbohydrates and fibre, which help in regulating the levels of blood sugar and promoting smooth digestion.

Common examples of sugar-free legumes include lima beans, pinto beans, black-eyed peas, chickpeas and kidney beans. If you experience bloating because of eating legumes, you should soak boiled beans in cold water for a few seconds and drop them in hot water for a few seconds.

Imprisoned detective may pose risk to star clients

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Four years after a private eye went to prison for wiretapping phones of the rich and famous on behalf of celebrities and Hollywood heavyweights, his clients are facing hefty bills for his skullduggery.

In the first of more than a dozen lawsuits against Anthony Pellicano's well-heeled clients, a jury last week ruled against the ex-wife of a billionaire philanthropist, awarding $4 million to his three adult children and former personal assistant after she violated their privacy.

The verdict could spell trouble for other former clients who have been sued, such as Paramount studio head Brad Grey and one-time superagent Michael Ovitz.

The case against the ex-wife, Jacqueline Colburn, is the first to be tried before a jury stemming from a criminal probe that ensnared Pellicano for targeting Sylvester Stallone, Garry Shandling and Kevin Nealon and for work he did for others like Chris Rock and an attorney who represented MGM mogul Kirk Kerkorian in a child custody battle.

Pellicano, 68, is now serving 15 years in a federal prison in Texas after being convicted in 2008 of racketeering and more than six dozen other counts, including conspiracy, wire fraud and wiretapping. He is scheduled to be released in March 2019.

The trial billed as a blockbuster that would reveal the seedier side of Hollywood fizzled in the end as Pellicano kept silent, acting as his own lawyer.

The evidence showed he dug up dirt on clients' rivals by bribing phone company employees to install wiretapping software and had rogue police officers search databases for personal information. The information was used in hardball negotiations for business disputes, divorces and lawsuits.

Clients such as Grey, Ovitz and comedian Rock were never charged in the case and they insisted they didn't know about Pellicano's tactics. Kerkorian also has said that he had no knowledge of any wiretapping being used.

Grey and Ovitz are now facing lawsuits that could be costly and where the evidence is potentially stronger than the Colburn case, which relied largely on testimony and not on FBI reports or damning audio tapes made by Pellicano.

"I would think people will think long and hard about their exposure," said attorney Lawrence Segal, who represented Richard Colburn's children. "A lot of defendants may be thinking that in the absence of actual recordings they stand a decent chance of a defense. But we were able to prevail on a largely circumstantial case."

About a dozen lawsuits have moved slowly through the legal system alleging wiretapping and privacy invasion. Among the other defendants are AT&T and the cities of Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, where the police officers who provided information to Pellicano worked.

Most of the lawsuits are pending before a judge but have been mired by appeals in the criminal case, which allows Pellicano and others to preserve their right against self-incrimination, and the exchange of documents between attorneys was put on hold for many months. No trial dates have even been set.

A settlement in some of the lawsuits has been reached, said attorney Brian Kabateck, who represents several Pellicano victims, but a deal hasn't been finalized. He said the Colburn verdict provides some reassurance to his clients.

"It shows that juries are still outraged about this behavior even though it was many years ago," he said. "I think it sends a message to the defendants that they are going to have to pay real money."

The verdict in the Colburn case is a fraction of the fortune billionaire philanthropist left behind when he died in 2004 at age 92.

Evidence showed that his eighth wife, Jacqueline, who was nearly 50 years younger, paid Pellicano at least $115,000 to snoop on her husband after he was caught having phone sex with another woman, according to the lawsuit.

Ex-Pellicano employee Richard Campau testified that Colburn was in the private eye's office regularly listening to audio tapes of calls to and from the family home. Physical therapist David Powers also testified that Colburn bragged to him that she had hired the best private investigator in Los Angeles and he was using wiretaps.

There were an estimated 500 calls that were wiretapped by Pellicano over a 10-month period which captured numerous personal, medical and business matters involving the three adult children from a prior marriage and the ex-personal assistant, all of whom believed their conversations were private.

They "never knew of the surreptitious eavesdropping and certainly never agreed to put their personal lives on public display," said plaintiffs' attorney Wayne Skigen.

The lawsuit focused solely on the ex-wife and Pellicano and wasn't bogged down by suing large entities, such as the phone company or any cities. Segal and Skigen are seeking a default judgment against Pellicano because he hasn't responded to their claims.

Attempts to reach Jacqueline Colburn's attorney, Stanley McKiernan, were unsuccessful Wednesday. McKiernan has said there isn't any evidence showing Pellicano wiretapped on his client's behalf.

Federal authorities started investigating Pellicano after former Los Angeles Times reporter Anita Busch found a dead fish with a rose in its mouth on her car along with a sign reading "stop" in June 2002.

Busch testified at the criminal trial that she believed Ovitz and Pellicano had orchestrated the threat because she co-wrote articles about the agent's alleged financial troubles while his talent agency was in talks to be acquired.

Ovitz is a defendant in a lawsuit filed by Busch. He has yet to give a deposition.

Ohio State men's NCAA college basketball player Deshaun Thomas talks to reporters at Big Ten media day in Rosemont, Ill., Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012. (AP Photo/Nam Y. Huh)

(AP) ? Tom Crean didn't really understand what he was getting into when he took the Indiana job four years ago.

Now, the mess is gone. Just look at the Hoosiers.

They are the top team in the Big Ten and Cody Zeller is the Preseason Player of the Year, according to a vote by conference media, results that were hardly surprising given their jump last season.

All the Hoosiers did was orchestrate a 15 1/2 -game turnaround that matched the biggest in Big Ten history, going 27-9 on the way to the Sweet 16.

It's fair to say they've come a long way since Crean took over for Kelvin Sampson in the wake of the phone-call scandal that gutted the program.

"We had hit rock bottom," he said Thursday at Big Ten media day. "We had all kinds of issues that were inside the program. You don't take the job at Indiana thinking you're going to deal with what we were dealing with, but we did. And we weren't going to leave. That wasn't an option."

Crean said he actually had a chance to leave after his first season at Indiana, a 6-25 nightmare in 2008-09 that included a 1-17 conference record, and he would have earned what he was making in his previous job at Marquette. It took him "about 10 seconds" to say no.

Now, the Hoosiers are back on top in a conference that appears to be loaded.

Michigan and Ohio State were picked to finish second and third after sharing the regular-season title with Michigan State last season, and the way Crean sees it, those three are the teams to beat until someone unseats them.

The Hoosiers have as good a chance as any, with the 6-foot-11 Zeller back after averaging 15.6 points and 6.6 rebounds as a freshman. He was a unanimous pick for the preseason all-conference team, with Michigan's Trey Burke, Ohio State's Aaron Craft and Deshaun Thomas, and Penn State's Tim Frazier also making it.

"The target of being an Indiana Hoosier has never changed," Crean said. "Indiana is synonymous throughout the country for being known for a lot of things in basketball. It was always a big, big game. It was always a big deal when you were playing Indiana or Indiana was coming to town. And I think that hasn't changed. Will it grow some? Maybe. But I think the bottom line is a year ago, when there really weren't those outside voices talking in a totally positive light where the team was at, that didn't phase them. They continued to work."

The Hoosiers are facing no easy task.

Michigan is right there. So is Ohio State, even if its best player (Jared Sullinger) and one of its all-time leading scorers (William Buford) are gone after a Final Four run.

The Buckeyes still have three starters back. And Michigan State coach Tom Izzo likes his team's chances even though Draymond Green is gone.

"We have a chance to put together a pretty good team, and unfortunately it's in a tough conference this year and that's going to make a difference," Izzo said.

Strength of the conference was a big theme on Thursday, only this year it seemed like something more than coach-speak. There seems to be some weight to it.

"We're going to have to back it up," said Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan, whose team is coming off a 26-win season and Sweet 16 run. "We're going to have to play well, that's for sure. There are certain teams now in our league that have that 'X' mark on their back, but that's good. I think that's good, that quality competition, that interest, the outside interest of people saying, "Well, we think this team is pretty good." This team is pretty good. That's OK, that's great for the league."

For Indiana, it's been a tough climb back toward the top. The Hoosiers won just 10 games in Crean's second season and 12 in his third, before turning it around a year ago. Zeller's arrival was the extra kick the program needed.

"It's pretty crazy to think about how far we've come," senior Jordan Hulls said. "It speaks volumes of how Coach Crean and his staff have really instilled their lives into getting Indiana basketball back to where people are used to seeing it. Being part of the losing seasons and then now, last year having a pretty good year and then expectations for this year, it's pretty cool to be a part of that."

Sex Talk: From the Bedroom to the Classroom ? ORANGE

By Ahsika Sanders

Dr. Lawrence Brownstein was invited to teach Human Sexuality by the University of Texas at Austin after almost 15 years of work with Planned Parenthood, where he hosted workshops on various sexual topics for teenagers across the state.

Brownstein says his course at UT aims to promote scholarly examination of social and personal factors in sexual expression. Human sexuality and loving relationships are taught from a psychological perspective, he says. The course examines the emotional and relationship dimensions of sexuality.

That?s straight from the syllabus, but having taken his course, I can honestly say that?s exactly what it does. He is able to tackle questions about sex in a way that makes you either comfortable enough to not squirm in your seat or comfortable enough to laugh at your awkwardness. For me, it was one of those rare occasions where heaps of information was fun.

I was even able to apply a class tidbit to my relationship almost a year and a half later. When my boyfriend and I joke around, I might lightly hit his arm or jokingly shove him. One day he was poking fun at my ?big feet? and my usual love tap was more of a?smack! It didn?t hurt him, but I realized it was much harder than usual and I was instantly reminded about Brownstein warning about being physical in a relationship. He said if you resort to a physical response instead of communicating verbally, then you may tend be physical in confrontation with them as well. I was so pleased to apply such good relationship advice that didn?t come from the pages of Comso.

In addition to teaching at UT, Brownstein maintains a private counseling practice and specializes in individual, marital and relationship counseling, which he says often presents issues of sexuality. ?The most common problems that people come up with are ? for males ? inability to maintain an erection or to have an orgasm, and for females, the most common one is loss of sexual interest with her mate, not necessarily with other people,? Brownstein says.

He says he addresses this loss of sexual interest by first determining if it is just the spouse they are disinterested in because if that?s the case, it?s less of an issue with an unhealthy sex drive. He explores what it is about their partner that might be turning them off to try to mend the relationship that way.

?But if they don?t have any sexual interest in anyone [at all], then one of the first things that we do is make sure that they have normal testosterone levels for a woman, and I try to find out if they having any pain or difficulty with intercourse that?s blocking the sexual drive,? he says. ?I?d ask a series of questions to try to focus the issue, like whether or not they ever remember ever having a strong sex drive and when that started to wane.?

Above anything else, Brownstein says the one thing he certainly hopes his students remember is that ?you are a miracle [and] to try to be kind to one another, particularly sexually.?

Business Travel | Brohammas

The girl at the table next to me is having a smoke. She has on thick black framed glasses and her hair is shaved close to her head on one side. She is sitting by herself breathing out mustiness and slowly turning the pages of her oversized fashion magazine.

Flowers and potted plants separate?our tables from the bejeweled old ladies and jacketed men as they pass on the sidewalk?heading into the Fox Theatre. The marquee is all lit up?with flashing lights announcing the ballet, a play, or a concert of some sort. I can?t tell which is playing tonight; I don?t care enough to look that close.

I have been sitting here long enough that the sky has gone from blue to black and the tall buildings have gone from bustling to blank. The windows on the higher ?floors have stopped reflecting the sunset, turned to electric light, and then turned off. It is not quite nine.

It is warm enough that the men who jog past go shirtless, no matter their physical condition. I?m not sure if I should be impressed with their boldness or appalled?by their?lack of self awareness. Either way I make a mental note to remind my future self, the one who eventually gets in shape, to keep his shirt on. I?m sure that if he should forget, plenty of people will remind him.

I?m guessing most of the joggers come from hotels, like me. Those strolling, dressed for an evening out come from parking lots. A man carrying groceries in a wheeled cart hints at local city living till he makes a right turn in front of me and heads into the Hotel Indigo. He is not local, just frugal.

I am lonely.

Not the sort of lonely where you hunger for company, the kind of lonely where you miss someone specific. Lonely may be too strong a word, bored?is better. There is plenty of entertainment walking in front of me, lots of talkative sales reps and convention goers at the bar inside, but I want that person?here with me that I can?kick under the table, tip my head toward the guy wearing the moon vest, and she will know what I mean without me saying it. She would laugh. She wouldn?t be laughing?at him, she would be laughing at the tv episode from two years ago. That is what I miss.

The girl at the next table has stopped smoking and started talking on her phone. They are at the wrong bar. She will meet them there.

There is now a man three tables?down smoking a cigar. He has on a logoed?polo shirt and khaki shorts. He is not watching me watch him, he is watching his smartphone. Groups of three or four walk past and at least one of them is always watching their phone. ?LED lit faces and palms walking down dark sidewalks ignoring the people right next to them.

I do it all the time. Its like whistling or shaking your leg under the table; you do it without?thinking. I add?phone?stairing?to my future self reminder list, then, in a moment of honesty erase it.

If I sit here long enough my mind will wander; to religion, the two papers I have half written?on my desktop, and people I know who are having trouble finding jobs or paying the bills. But then I will notice someone wearing a bow tie or realize I?m whistling three lines of the same song over and over.?Then I remember the insurance forms I was supposed to fill out. It is too late to do anything about it tonight other than loathe myself and cross my fingers I remember tomorrow.

The cigar man is gone. I can?t remember when my flight leaves tomorrow so I stare into my LED lit palm to look it up. Someone across the street thinks something is funny. I go back upstairs and pack.

Zynga cuts 5 percent of work force, ending 13 games

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Zynga Inc laid off 5 percent of its full-time workforce and shut its Boston office on Tuesday as it embarked on a sweeping cost-cutting campaign that may eventually see the "FarmVille" game creator close its Japanese and British studios as well.

The company, which is trying to arrest a steep decline in earnings as users gradually migrate onto mobile devices or rival games, plans to "sunset" 13 unspecified older titles, Chief Executive Mark Pincus said in a staff memo on Tuesday that was published on the company blog.

"This is the most painful part of an overall cost reduction plan that also includes significant cuts in spending on data hosting, advertising and outside services, primarily contractors," Pincus wrote in his memo.

Pincus said the cuts would accompany a regime of "more stringent budget and resource allocation around new games and partner projects," hinting at a fundamental change for a company that was known for expanding aggressively through hires and acquisition deals before it went public to fanfare last December.

In March, Pincus made a gamble to acquire game studio OMGPOP for $180 million before acknowledging this month that the deal didn't pan out, leading to a $90 million writedown.

The memo came on the eve of Zynga's earnings report on Wednesday, when Pincus and Chief Financial Officer David Wehner are expected to provide Wall Street with more comprehensive details about the company's overhaul strategy.

Tuesday's cuts were presaged on October 4, when Zynga slashed its 2012 outlook and warned investors that it would record a steep drop in sequential quarterly revenues for the first time since its December initial public offering. At the time, Pincus said the company would examine how to proceed with cuts.

As the first step of Zynga's reduction plan unfolded Tuesday, Pincus said that Zynga would significantly pull back its investment in "The Ville" game - a major recent initiative - and scale back on its Austin, Texas studio as it sought to cut costs. He also said the company was "proposing" to close its Japanese and British offices.

Rumors of the layoffs in Austin and Boston had spread on gaming blogs and over social networks during the day, and the company's shares closed down more than 5 percent, at $2.20. But they bounced back 4.5 percent to $2.30 in after-hours trade, following news of the cost-cutting initiatives.

"It's good to see them be realistic, but the real question is not a matter of profitability, it's 'can you get revenue going the right direction?'" said Ben Schachter, a senior analyst at Macquarie Securities. "The Street doesn't want to see cost-cutting for what was supposed to be a growth company."

Pincus, who grew the company behind such ageing Facebook hits as "CityVille" "and Mafia Wars", will face employees at a quarterly gathering next week at the company's San Francisco headquarters.

Employees say morale is in steep decline, with Zynga forced this month to slash its 2012 results outlook for the second time.

Since going public at $10 a share, Zynga has lost over three-quarters of its market value. It has been hit by delays in its game pipeline as older titles fade, while it has struggled to come up with new hits for mobile devices.

Tuesday's layoffs amounted to roughly 150 out of Zynga's 2,900 workers.

Pincus said on Wednesday the company's management did not make the decision to cut employees "lightly" and that it recognized the "impact to our colleagues and friends."

But with the company's top line stagnant, analysts warned they expected news of further cuts on Wednesday's earnings call.

"They probably need to cut more people, and they probably will," said Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities.

Russian-American trio head for space station

KOROLYOV, Russia (Reuters) - A Soyuz spacecraft carrying two Russians and an American blasted off on Tuesday for the International Space Station (ISS), where the men are to spend five months in orbit.

The Russian-built Soyuz TMA-06M lifted off on time from the Baikonur launch facility in Kazakhstan for the two-day trip to the station, orbiting about 250 miles above Earth.

"The space ship has entered orbit," an announcer at the mission control centre in Korolyov, outside Moscow, said nine minutes later, prompting a cheer from flight engineers, space officials and relatives watching on a giant screen.

"Everything went well. There was a small issue with pressure on board but we fixed it immediately," Vladimir Solovyov, flight director for the Russian segment of the space station, told journalists.

U.S. astronaut Kevin Ford is making his second space voyage, while cosmonauts Oleg Novitsky and Yevgeny Tarelkin are on their first mission.

In footage from the cramped capsule, Tarelkin pumped his spacesuited fist after the successful lift-off while a stuffed toy hippopotamus donated by one of the cosmonauts' daughters as a good luck charm floated in zero gravity as the craft reached orbit.

The trio will join the current ISS crew, Yuri Malenchenko of Russia, Sunita Williams of the United States and Akihiko Hoshide of Japan, who are to return to Earth on November 12.

Another crew of three will join Novitsky, Tarelkin and Ford aboard the station, a $100 billion research complex funded by 15 nations, in late December.

The rocket carrying the Soyuz craft lifted off from a launch pad at Baikonur that had not been used for a manned mission in 30 years. The platform had been renovated so that it could be used while the main pad used for manned launches is refurbished.

Tuesday's was initially scheduled for October 15 but was postponed because of problems with an unspecified piece of equipment that had to be replaced, according to Vladimir Popovkin, head of the Russian space agency Roscosmos.

Russia's space program has suffered a series of humiliating setbacks in recent months, mostly involving unmanned missions such as satellite launches, that industry veterans blame on a decade of crimped budgets and a brain drain.

Since the retirement of the space shuttle fleet last year, the U.S. space agency NASA must rely on Russia to take astronauts to the station at a cost of $60 million each.

NASA is working with private companies to develop craft it hopes will be able to do the job by 2017.

Roy Hibbert Does Gangnam Style in Mall (Video - Rant Sports

Roy Hibbert October 2012

Pat Lovell-US Presswire

If you aren?t familiar with the song ?Gangnam Style,? you must have been living under a rock or something. The latest song by South Korean pop singer/rapper?Psy?has been going crazy for the past few months from all over the world.

It?s already the most viewed video on YouTube and people can?t get enough of the catchy tune. Many have already done their mock-ups of it, some who are celebrities and other who are athletes.

For?Indiana Pacers?center?Roy Hibbert, he decided to join in on it and he did it himself at a local mall in Indiana. It took him a while to get in to create suspense, as some Pacers fans started out doing it, maybe some who are part of Hibbert?s ?Area 55? fanbase.

When it was towards to building up to the chorus, Hibbert came in the most?suspenseful?way with his 7-2 frame, coming in with a white tuxedo and breaking it down for the public to enjoy that saw this performance coming out of nowhere.

It?s pretty fun to watch, though Hibbert wasn?t too great at it. He did look pretty stiff doing it and really couldn?t gel, but at least he did his part and gave people some enjoyment out of it. I know I did; it was pretty funny to watch.

Basically, we?ve seen the Pacers center just about everywhere now.

He?s been in MMA training places, he plays a role in?Parks & Recreation, he tries out to be?a member of Samcro or a One-Niner on Sons of Anarchy, he brings his fans to go see?Prometheus and now he does his own version of Gangnam Style in a mall.

Hibbert, you?re one of a kind.

The Differences Between Major Red Wines

With so many different fine red wine types it's hard to know the difference between them all, and which one is best for the food you're pairing it with. It's especially helpful to know the difference when purchasing fine red wine, as you'll want to make sure you're buying the right wine when paying a premium price rather than just a standard bottle of table wine.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Pronounced 'cab-er-nay so-vin-yon' this is one of the most recognized and popular wine types in the world, and for a while was considered as the best red wine, but Merlot is quickly gaining in popularity. A 'Cab Sav' is a big, bold wine full of Tannins, aged beautifully in oak barrels, and produced mostly in France, the USA and Australia.

Merlot

Pronounded 'Mer-low', this is a wine best enjoyed young, when it's supple and full of flavour. A full and rich Merlot goes exceptionally well with heavy dishes such as lamb or rich puddings, while a lighter Merlot goes very well with soup and pasta dishes. Merlot is a fabulous red wine to accompany cheeses.

Chianti

Possibly Italy's most famous fine red wine, Chianti is pronounced 'key-an-tea. Still produced in Tuscany, Chianti is one of the few traditional wines still produced there. It is a blend with Sangiovese the prominent grape, but it may also contain other grapes including Cabernet Sauvignon. A wine full of character and a mix of floral and berry flavours, it is the ideal accompaniment for tomato based dishes.

Shiraz

Pronounced 'Shear-az' this grape is the most widely grown in Australia, and therefore a very good value wine. It has quite high alcohol content, but is low in acidity and full of fruity flavours, making it a very enjoyable wine for meaty dishes such as steak, although it is also a good every day choice.

Pinot Noir

A very light and sophisticated fine red wine, Pinot Noir is pronounced 'Pee-no No-our', and is great with meat dishes, goat's chesses and scallops. It is one of the most sophisticated wines, and full-bodied and full of flavour, but without being too acidic or heavy. Grown in cooler climates in California and France, it is a difficult grape to grow so is difficult to find for a decent price.

Grenache

Although not very well known, Grenache is one of the most planted red wines in the world. Pronounced 'gren-aash' it thrives in hot, dry conditions and is a very sweet but hardy wine due to its low acidity but high alcohol content, best served chilled and with spicy foods.

Hulu Plus app heads to Windows 8 tablets and tablets, tailored for new UI

Windows 8 users, what with their "Modern" UI and pinned applications, won't have to stoop to using Hulu Plus in an antiquated internet browser any longer. Hulu today announced its brand new Windows 8 and Windows 8 tablet application, which is designed specifically for use with the tiled UI that Micrsoft's new multiplatform OS is based around. The new app aims to take advantage of that UI in a variety of ways -- pinning an episode or show to your start screen, for instance, or multitasking with other apps while Hulu continues playing in a smaller window, cropped to the left. We've dropped a video walkthrough of the app just below the break.

Those with early access to Windows 8 can grab the app right now in the Windows Store through this link (at least, when it goes live again -- it seems to be down right now); the app will be available to the rest of us at launch on October 26th, and on Windows 8 tablets the same day.

Rail wars? Russia ponders new railroad-based missile systems ? RT

Russia plans to introduce railway-based missile systems.(Photo from roadplanet.ru)

Plans are underway to create combat railway-based missile systems designed to give Russia a more flexible means of defense.

?The system consists of a train with two or three diesel locomotives and specialized railcars, which look like refrigerator or passenger railcars, but carry intercontinental ballistic missiles, together with command posts, Col. Vadim Koval, the Russian Defense Ministry's spokesman for the Strategic Rocket Forces (RVSN)the Russian Defense Ministry, told reporters.

Although the last railway-based missile unit was decommissioned almost a decade ago, the system is getting a second look as a means of protecting Russia?s vast landmass as global threats become more diversified.

"A final decision, however, has not been taken on the issue," Koval added.

The idea of using railroads to move around missiles is not new. Koval noted that the first unit of railway-based missile systems was put on combat duty in Kostroma in October 1987, and removed from service in 2005.

However, with the nature of warfare changing and the global situation increasingly volatile and unpredictable, military leaders argue it may be a good time to give some versatility to Russia?s missile defenses.

Meanwhile, Russia is looking for ways to counter the US missile defense system, which is being deployed in Eastern Europe. Despite Moscow?s warning that the technology has the potential to spark a new arms race, US and NATO officials remain adamant and refuse to cooperate with Russia. Washington has even rejected Moscow?s request to provide it with legal assurances that the system will never be activated against Russian territory.

Railway-based missile systems are designed for use along special military patrol routes, as well as railway lines used by the public.

Formerly, three missile divisions?? near Kostroma, Krasnoyarsk and Perm?? were deployed. Employing 12 trains, the system transported 36 missiles, each with 10 nuclear warheads.

Russian military experts say that with technological advances made in missile technology, the use of railroad-based systems could be an effective means of protecting Russia.
