Exclusive: Walmart tests iPhone item scanning at Arkansas store

Fri Aug 31, 2012 2:45pm EDT

(Reuters) - Walmart Stores Inc is testing a "Scan & Go" system that would allow shoppers to scan items using their iPhones and then quickly pay at a self-checkout counter.

Earlier this week, Walmart invited employees with Apple Inc iPhones to participate in a test at a Walmart supercenter in Rogers, Arkansas, near the company's headquarters, according to a form on the Survey Monkey website (here).

While self-checkout aisles are common at many stores, the ability to scan items with one's mobile phone while shopping is not a typical process. Supervalu Inc's Jewel-Osco chain once let shoppers use hand-held scanners and then enter that information at the checkout to pay, but that test ended years ago.

A push to get other participants, including Walmart employees' friends and family, appeared to have also been emailed this week by someone from the company's @WalmartLabs team, but could not be verified on Friday afternoon.

"We're continually testing new and innovative ways to serve customers and enhance the shopping experience in our stores," said Walmart spokesman David Tovar.

Biden: Obama leadership saved auto plants

LORDSTOWN, Ohio (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden mounted the Democratic counterpoint to the Republican presidential ticket Friday, drawing attention to the Obama administration's rescue of the auto industry and portraying GOP presidential challenger Mitt Romney as a foe of government efforts to save jobs.

Laying out President Barack Obama's indictment of Republican polices, Biden said that Rep. Paul Ryan, Romney's running mate, has voted in Congress for measures that caused massive federal debts, including two wars, a prescription drug benefit and tax cuts for the wealthy that were not paid for.

"They call their plan new, bold and gutsy," Biden told about 200 supporters in a union hall. "There is nothing gutsy about giving another trillion dollars in tax cuts to millionaires; there is nothing bold about turning Medicare into a voucher system. There is nothing bold about kicking 19 million kids and elderly off of Medicaid with no place else to go."

Biden spoke about two miles from the sprawling GM plant in Lordstown in an event meant to emphasize the importance of the auto bailout to Ohio. The recoveries of GM and Chrysler have been recurrent themes in Obama's re-election campaign, particularly in states such as Michigan and the battleground of Ohio.

Biden criticized Romney for opposing a taxpayer rescue of GM and Chrysler.

"What they didn't acknowledge is Governor Romney's position was 'let Detroit go bankrupt,'" he said, quoting the headline on a 2008 Romney opinion piece in the New York Times.

Ryan campaign spokesman Brendan Buck responded that Obama inherited a troubled economy but has made it worse.

"Like many towns across America, Janesville, Wis., is still waiting for the recovery the president promised," Buck said, referring to Ryan's hometown, where a GM auto plant was idled in 2008.

Biden's remarks came as Romney and Ryan left their Republican National Convention in Tampa seeking the votes of former Obama supporters who have grown disenchanted with his presidency.

Obama traveled to Texas on Friday, where he was speaking to military families on the second anniversary of the end of combat operations in Iraq.

Tiny mites on your face may cause rosacea

Scientists may have finally found what sparks the inflamed and reddened skin in people suffering from rosacea: tiny mites that crawl across most of our faces, unseen and unfelt. The new finding may eventually lead to more effective treatments, researchers say.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie planning British countryside family holiday

The couple will brave the weather in North West England to give their kids - Maddox, 11, Pax, eight, Zahara, seven, Shiloh, six, and four-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox ? a traditional break in the Lake District.

A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: ?Angelina has to remain close to the UK because of her filming schedule for ?Maleficent?.

?Originally, the film was supposed to be shooting close to the Lakes, but relocated to a more convenient spot close to Pinewood studios.

?They?d already booked a few days off though, and they didn?t want the kids to miss out on their trip up to the Lakes, so they decided to go anyway.

?Brad has rented out an entire boathouse, and the couple have been looking up some local restaurants to dine at whilst there.?

Thrill seeker Brad has also planned some adventure activities with the kids.

The source added: ?They?re also planning a day of quad biking for the kids ? and Brad.?

Preventing Type 2 Diabetes

(NewsUSA) ? You can?t blame it on your parents anymore.

A new study by the Harvard School of Public Health makes clear that your genes ?take a back seat? to behavioral and lifestyle factors when it comes to developing Type 2 diabetes, and that -; where men are concerned -; lifting weights for just 30 minutes a day, five times a week, can cut your risk by as much as 34 percent. Make that as much as 59 percent when weights are combined with aerobic exercise.

Women, too, can benefit from a healthier lifestyle. Separate data suggest that 90 percent of Type 2 diabetes in females can be attributed to things like excess weight, smoking and alcohol use.

?Clearly, this is a preventable disease, and sadly about 6 million of the more than 24 million American diabetics don?t even know they have it,? says the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress? Gerard W. Clum, DC. Aside from treating any aches and pains from all that exercising, today?s chiropractors counsel patients on ways to improve their health.

Burning-monk photographer Malcolm Browne dies

NEW YORK (AP) ? The phone calls went out from Saigon's Xa-Loi Buddhist pagoda to chosen members of the foreign news corps. The message: Be at a certain location tomorrow for a "very important" happening.

The next morning, June 11, 1963, an elderly monk named Thich Quang Duc, clad in a brown robe and sandals, assumed the lotus position on a cushion in a blocked-off street intersection. Aides drenched him with aviation fuel, and the monk calmly lit a match and set himself ablaze.

Of the foreign journalists who had been alerted to the shocking political protest against South Vietnam's U.S.-supported government, only one, Malcolm Browne of The Associated Press, showed up.

The photos he took appeared on front pages around the globe and sent shudders all the way to the White House, prompting President John F. Kennedy to order a re-evaluation of his administration's Vietnam policy.

"We have to do something about that regime," Kennedy told Henry Cabot Lodge, who was about to become U.S. ambassador to Saigon.

Browne, who died Monday at a New Hampshire hospital at age 81, recalled in a 1998 interview that that was the beginning of the rebellion, which led to U.S.-backed South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem being overthrown and murdered, along with his brother, Ngo Dinh Nhu, the national security chief.

"Almost immediately, huge demonstrations began to develop that were no longer limited to just the Buddhist clergy, but began to attract huge numbers of ordinary Saigon residents," Browne said in the interview.

Browne was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2000 and spent his last years using a wheelchair to get around. He was rushed to the hospital Monday night after experiencing difficulty breathing, said his wife, Le Lieu Browne, who lives in Thetford, Vt.

Browne spent most of his journalism career at The New York Times, where he put in 30 years of his four decades as a journalist, much of it in war zones.

By his own account, Browne survived being shot down three times in combat aircraft, was expelled from half a dozen countries and was put on a "death list" in Saigon.

In 1964, Browne, then an AP correspondent, and rival Times journalist David Halberstam both won Pulitzer Prizes for their reporting on the conflict in Vietnam. The war had escalated because of the Nov. 1, 1963, coup d'etat in which Diem was killed.

The plot ? by a cabal of generals acting with tacit U.S. approval ? was triggered in part by earlier Buddhist protests against the pro-Catholic Diem regime. These drew worldwide attention on June 11, 1963, when a monk set himself afire in a Saigon street intersection in protest as about 500 people watched.

The burning monk photo became one of the first iconic news photos of the Vietnam War.

"Malcome Browne was a precise and determined journalist who helped set the standard for rigorous reporting in the early days of the Vietnam War," said Kathleen Carroll, AP executive editor and senior vice president. "He was also a genuinely decent and classy man. "

Malcolm Wilde Browne was born in New York on April 17, 1931. He graduated from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania with a degree in chemistry. Working in a lab when drafted in 1956, he was sent to Korea as a tank driver, but by chance got a job writing for a military newspaper, and from that came a decision to trade science for a career in journalism.

He worked first for the Middletown Daily Record in New York, where he worked alongside Hunter S. Thompson, author of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." Browne then worked briefly for International News Service and United Press, the forerunner of United Press International, before joining the AP in 1960. A year later, the AP sent him from Baltimore to Saigon to head its expanding bureau.

There, he became a charter member of a small group of reporters covering South Vietnam's U.S.-backed military struggle against the Viet Cong, a home-grown communist insurgency.

Within the year he was joined in Saigon by photographer Horst Faas and reporter Peter Arnett. By 1966, all three members of what a competitor called the AP's "human wave" had earned Pulitzer Prizes ? one of journalism's highest honors ? for Vietnam coverage.

Writing about official corruption and military incompetence, the group ? which also included the Times' Halberstam, Neil Sheehan of UPI, Charles Mohr of Time magazine, Nick Turner of Reuters and others ? were accused by critics in Vietnam and Washington of aiding the communist cause.

At one news briefing, Browne's persistent questions prompted an exasperated U.S. officer to ask, "Browne, why don't you get on the team?"

Browne, like some of his peers, initially saw the U.S. commitment to helping the beleaguered Saigon government as a reasonable idea.

In his 1993 memoir, "Muddy Boots and Red Socks," Browne said he "did not go to Vietnam harboring any opposition to America's role in the Vietnamese civil war" but became disillusioned by the Kennedy administration's secretive "shadow war" concealing the extent of U.S. involvement.

Amid the furor over tendentious coverage, some reporters claimed to have received death threats, and Browne said his name was among those on a list of "supposed enemies of (South Vietnam) who had to be eliminated."

In the 1998 interview, he said that he "never took that seriously" but that when South Vietnam government agents tried to arrest his wife, who had angered officials by quitting her information ministry job, Browne stared them down by standing in his doorway brandishing a souvenir submachine gun.

Tall, lanky and blond, Browne was a cerebral and eccentric character with a penchant for red socks ? they were easy to match, he explained ? and an acerbic wit befitting his grandfather's cousin, Oscar Wilde.

He ridiculed the word "media," for example, as "that dreadful Latin plural our detractors use when they really mean "scum."

Overall, associates saw him as complex, rather mysterious, and above all, independent.

"Mal Browne was a loner; he worked alone, did not share his sources and didn't often mix socially with the press group," recalled Faas, who died in 2012. "And stubborn ? he wouldn't compromise on a story just to please his editors or anyone else."

Browne wrote a 1965 book, "The New Face of War," and a manual for new reporters in Vietnam. Among its kernels of advice: Have a sturdy pair of boots, watch out for police spies who eavesdrop on reporters' bar conversations, and "if you're crawling through grass with the troops and you hear gunfire, don't stick your head up to see where it's coming from, as you will be the next target."

South Vietnamese officials censored early news reports but to mixed effects. At least once, Browne sent a story to the AP by surreptitiously taping a handwritten note over an innocuous photo being transmitted to Tokyo.

By 1965, impressed by how television appeared to be dominating the public discourse, the reporter who had never owned a TV set left the AP to join ABC News in Vietnam.

Browne quit ABC after a year over management questions.

After a venture into magazine writing, Browne joined The New York Times in 1968. He worked in Latin America, Eastern Europe and Asia, left again to edit a science magazine, and returned to the Times in 1985, mainly as a science writer. He also covered the 1991 Gulf War, again clashing with U.S. officials over censorship issues.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Timothy; a daughter, Wendy, from a previous marriage; a brother, Timothy; and a sister, Miriam.

Browne will be buried on the family's property in Vermont, his widow said.

No comments - The Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives

The fourth Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex (LGBTI) Archives, Libraries, Museums, and Special Collections (ALMS) conference was held in Amsterdam, August 1?3, 2012. Hosted by the Internationaal homo lesbisch informatiecentrum en archief (IHLIA) and held at the Amsterdam Public Library, the conference?s theme was ?The Future of LGBTI Histories?.
Figure 1: The book display, IHLIA. Credit: Don McLeod.

IHLIA, the largest LGBTI archive in Europe, is housed on the sixth floor of the main branch of the Amsterdam Public Library, which is the largest public library building in Europe. The IHLIA section of the floor contained LGBTI book displays, including rare items, photographs, artifacts, and other materials. Most of the action took place in the large theatre on the seventh floor, with breakout sessions occurring in rooms located near the collection on the sixth floor.

Figure 2: The Amsterdam Public Library, site of the conference. Credit: Don McLeod.

Almost 150 delegates, from all over the world, participated in the conference. More than forty papers and keynote speeches were delivered in the theatre over the three days, mostly by people involved with small, community-based organizations. A particular theme was the state and growth of LGBTI collections in Eastern Europe, with presentations from Hungary, Poland, and Turkey. Several European countries were well-represented, as were Australia, Britain, Canada, and the United States. Delegates represented collections in many other countries as well, from China to South Africa. The Canadian delegates were Danielle Cooper (York University, Toronto), David DeAngelis and James Miller (Pride Library, Western University, London, Ontario), and Don McLeod and Gordon Richardson (Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives). Don delivered two papers, one on the LGBTI serials collection at the CLGA, the second on the Ernst Maass collection of correspondence and photographs related to Magnus Hirschfeld, discovered in Brooklyn, New York.

Papers and presentations were delivered in themed sessions. August 1 dealt with the experiences of building archives and collections; August 2 highlighted the role of new media and technologies, oral history, and finding hidden materials; August 3 examined forming alliances with mainstream institutions, and closed with ruminations on the future of LGBTI archives and collections.

One excellent feature of the conference was that all papers were posted in advance and delegates were able to attend all the papers, followed by breakout sessions for questions. As well, all speeches and papers were filmed as they were presented and will be made available by IHLIA.

Common themes emerged: the lack of stable financial support for LGBTI archives and collections; challenges in finding volunteer help; relationships between community-based and mainstream institutions; collections growth and storage problems; digitization. There was also some hint of the dangers of engaging in LGBTI library and archival organizing in certain parts of the world, where social, religious, or political forces stifle such work. For example, Gay and Lesbian Memory in Action (GALA), at the University of the Witwatersrand, Braamfontein, South Africa, remains the only LGBTI archive on the African continent.

Don and Gordon were able to take a small, private tour of the IHLIA collections, offered by Jack van der Wel, director of IHLIA, including the basement storage areas.

Figure 3: Gordon Richardson, Jack van der Wel, and Joseph Hawkins (ONE) on tour in the basement storage area of IHLIA. Credit: Don McLeod.
Each day of the conference featured social events, including a tour of ALETTA (Equality Knowledge Institute for Emancipation and Women?s History), an opening reception followed by a boat tour of Amsterdam?s canals, and a mobile Pink Perspectives tour of LGBTI historic sites, ending with drinks at Cafe ?t Mandje, thought to be the oldest LGBTI bar in the world (open since 1927). The conference ended with a wonderful dinner at the Lloyd Hotel.

?

In past years, the ALMS conference was held in the spring. The Amsterdam conference was held at the beginning of August to coincide with Amsterdam Canal Pride, which occurred the day after the conference. Delegates were able to see this spectacular event, during which more than eighty floats literally floated down Amsterdam?s network of canals.

Figure 5: Canal Pride fun, August 4, 2012. Credit: Don McLeod.? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Jack van der Wel, Lin McDevitt-Pugh, and other members of the local steering committee, as well as volunteers, deserve thanks for organizing a truly memorable, rich, and inspiring conference.

The ALMS baton has been passed to Bryan Knicely and the Stonewall National Archives and Museum, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, who will host the 2014 LGBTI ALMS conference.

Opposition says Putin's lifestyle costs billions

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russian President Vladimir Putin is spending billions of taxpayers' rubles on 20 luxurious residences, 43 jets and four yachts, a top opposition leader claimed Tuesday.

All heads of state use government property and funds for presentation purposes, but Boris Nemtsov says Putin's lifestyle is far more lavish than his Western counterparts.

In the report released Tuesday, Nemtsov, a former deputy prime minister, estimated that the maintenance of Putin's residences, jets and cars alone costs $2.5 billion a year.

"Putin has been mistaking government property for his own for a long time," Nemtsov said. "This is an insolent, cynical and luxurious lifestyle at taxpayers' expense."

Putin's press service was not immediately available for comment Tuesday but his spokesman had earlier words on the report.

"All of this is government property and Putin uses it all legally as an elected president," Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the RBK daily on Monday after parts of the report had appeared online.

The report ? titled "The Life of A Galley Slave" after an epithet Putin used in 2008 to describe the hardships of his first two presidencies ? is based largely on news reports. It includes numerous photographs, including of Putin's collection of exquisite wristwatches worth about $700,000 ? about his official salary for six years,

Putin returned to the Kremlin in May for a third term after four years sitting out as prime minister due to constitutional limits.

Opposition members and a handful of Russia's independent publications have long claimed that Putin had more than a dozen luxurious residencies built or renovated for him throughout Russia ? from an imperial palace in his native St. Petersburg to resorts on the Black Sea to hunting grounds in national parks.

They also accused him of appointing his childhood friends, former classmates and KGB colleagues to key government jobs or allowing their businesses to thrive on oil and gas exports or hefty government contracts.

Nemtsov said his report will be distributed free of charge or online because he could not find a Russian publisher.

Despite a wave of massive protests this winter that followed Russia's fraud-tainted parliamentary and presidential votes, Putin remains popular among average Russians, largely thanks to government-controlled television networks that critics compare to Soviet propaganda.

Nemtsov, who heads the People's Freedom Party, has already authored another report on the unprecedented rise of corruption among government officials since Putin was first elected in 2000.

Graft also has become more institutionalized under Putin. Bosses tend not to punish their employees for taking bribes, but rather demand a share. Observers say the Kremlin has tolerated the wrongdoing because it's the main source of income for millions of bureaucrats whose support is crucial to Putin.

Reflecting that, Transparency International's corruption perception index has ranked Russia 143rd out of 183 countries.

15-year-old Lydia Ko wins in Canada

COQUITLAM, British Columbia (AP) ? Lydia Ko made some more history ? and made it clear that she has no plans to rush into a professional golf career.

The 15-year-old Ko is used to questions about her future, and she handled the latest round with ease Sunday after running away with the Canadian Women's Open to become the youngest winner in LPGA Tour history and only the fifth amateur champion.

"I'll still remain an amateur and then finish high school and then go to college," said Ko, who has mentioned Stanford as her college of choice. "I mean this is a great win, but I don't think this will affect me changing my roots to my career."

The South Korean-born New Zealander closed with a 5-under 67 for a three-stroke victory. She broke the age record of 16 set by Lexi Thompson last September in the Navistar LPGA Classic in Alabama, and is the first amateur winner since JoAnne Carner in the 1969 Burdine's Invitational.

"To break another record, or being in the history, it's amazing, and it's always awesome to be able to play with the pros," Ko said. "The last few holes, it got a bit nerve wracking, but Stacy Lewis, after my birdie on 15, she said, 'You know you can do it.' It was really great to have another player that I look up to giving me that much support. So it was really awesome."

In January, Ko won the New South Wales Open in Australia at 14 to become the youngest player to win a professional tour event, a mark broken by 14-year-old Brooke Henderson in June in a 36-hole Canadian Women's Tour event in Quebec. Ko also won the U.S. Women's Amateur two weeks ago in Cleveland.

"I didn't cry after this one," said Ko, but (after) that one I did cry," Ko said, referencing the Amateur. "Yeah, to me, U.S. Amateur is a big event, and obviously this is a huge event as well. But still, as an amateur winning one of the biggest amateur events, I feel like it was a better win ? even though this one was awesome."

Ko finished at 13-under 275 at The Vancouver Golf Club, pulling away with birdies on five of the first six holes on the back nine. She opened with consecutive 68s and shot a 72 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead into the final round.

"I was most impressed with just her demeanor," said Lewis, who tied for sixth at 7 under. "I mean you would have never known that it was the final round of an LPGA event. She played like she had been there before."

Inbee Park shot a 69 to finish second. Park chipped in for birdie on the final hole, and Ko closed with a bogey to make it closer.

"The pressure she was handling is really amazing," Park said. "I'm really happy for her. It's great for her career ? and I think I was just lucky to get the winner's check today."

Park's $300,000 check as the top pro moved her past Lewis for the season money lead with $1,419,940.

U.S. Women's Open champion Na Yeon Choi, Chella Choi and Jiyai Shin tied for third at 8 under. Na Yeon Choi had a 73, and Chella Choi and Shin shot 71.

The glove Ko wore in the final round will be displayed in the World Golf Hall of Fame.

"To have something that's mine to be up there, it's amazing, and it doesn't come down or anything," she said. "So it will always remain there, and it'll be a good memory. It's been an awesome week."

Ko was headed to her native South Korea on Monday, and will return to the tour next month for the Women's British Open.

VAIL RESORTS AND WORLD CHAMPION SKIER LINDSEY VONN ANNOUNCE EPICMIX RACING TO ENGAGE MORE KIDS AND FAMILIES IN SKI RACING THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA

VAIL RESORTS GUESTS CAN SEE HOW THEY STACK UP AGAINST THE MOST SUCCESSFUL U.S. SKI RACER OF ALL TIME AND SHARE THEIR RESULTS WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS

Every champion has a story to share and now, with the introduction of VAIL RESORTS? EPICMIX RACING?, skiers can see how they stack up against the greatest American ski racer?LINDSEY VONN?and share it with their family and friends.

VAIL RESORTS has announced the third generation of its wildly popular ski and snowboard application, EpicMix?, which, once it launches in mid-December, will provide skiers a new way to experience ski racing at VAIL, BEAVER CREEK, BRECKENRIDGE, KEYSTONE in COLORADO and HEAVENLY and NORTHSTAR (the LAKE TAHOE area of CALIFORNIA and NEVADA). With EPICMIX RACING, skiers will automatically have their race times compared to ski racing great, LINDSEY VONN, with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded based on achievement. Race times, digital medals, overall leaderboards and leaderboards with just family and friends will all be available on both the EPICMIX website and mobile application. Race results and medals can then be easily shared on FACEBOOK and TWITTER.

Epic Mix logo

? EPICMIX launched in 2010 and experts called it a ?game changer? and ?one of the most ridiculously cool ...? mobile strategies. The true innovation with EPICMIXis that the app and online site allows guests to selectively share stats and information via Twitter and Facebook without requiring skiers or snowboarders to do anything different other than enjoy their skiing and snowboarding experience. Instead of manual check-ins, the RF-enabled pass or ticket allows for automatic

Epic Mix logo

check-ins at each lift at all six resorts, which then tracks the vertical feet and rewards guests for accomplishments like riding every lift in one day to earn the Conqueror pin. Six months after it debuted, it won a ?PEOPLE?S VOICE? WEBBY AWARD in the Experimental and Innovation Category for Mobile Devices. Nearly 100,000 guests activated their EPICMIX accounts in the 2010-2011 ski and snowboard season which equated to a 15-percent adoption rate. When the Company launched EPICMIX PHOTO in 2011, experts again lauded the social media application for changing the vacation photo business, proclaiming that ?the days of heading to the photo center and searching through hundreds of photos of strangers and their kids is over?. Last year with EPICMIX PHOTO, more than 200,000 additional guests activated accounts and shared more than two million photos on their social networks.

How it will work: (1) EPICMIX RACING courses will be located on intermediate trails at the resorts in comparable locations as they are today and designed to be fun and challenging but not intimidating for skiers of all ages, (2) Guests can ski right up to the start gate and quickly purchase and register for their races using their credit card or resort charge with either their season pass or daily lift ticket. Guests will no longer have to go inside or fill out paper forms, (3) LINDSEY VONN will set the pace for EPICMIX RACING at the U.S. SKI TEAM TRAINING EVENT at VAIL MOUNTAIN in early NOVEMBER 2012, (4) For each race, digital medals of gold, silver and bronze will be awarded through the EPICMIX APPLICATION, based upon the skier?s age, gender and discipline. Kids will also earn physical medals after each race, (5) EPICMIX will adjust each racer?s time for age, gender and discipline and compare that to the time set by LINDSEY VONN and assign each racer a ?seconds behind Lindsey? score for each race, (6) EPICMIX RACING will be integrated into the EPICMIX DASHBOARD and will feature a SPECIAL EPICMIX RACING SECTION to track your overall race times, points and medals on www.EpicMix.com. VAIL RESORTS guests can also see how their results stack up against other skiers on their social networks, and (7) Racers of all ages can participate in the Lindsey Vonn Race Series by completing 10 races in the 2012-2013 season.

EPICMIX is available to all VAIL RESORTS guests at any of its seven world-class mountain resorts?VAIL, BEAVER CREEK, BRECKENRIDGE, KEYSTONE, HEAVENLY, NORTHSTAR and KIRKWOOD?who purchase any lift ticket or season pass this year. Almost every ticket and pass will be enabled with RF TECHNOLOGY and allow guests to participate in EPICMIX. (EPICMIX PHOTO and EPICMIX RACING will not be available at Kirkwood this ski season.)

EPICMIX RACING COURSES will be located at VAIL, BEAVER CREEK, BRECKENRIDGE and KEYSTONE in Colorado and HEAVENLY and NORTHSTAR in LAKE TAHOE. EPICMIX RACING will be available at KIRKWOOD for the 2013-2014 SEASON.

The safety and privacy of guests is the highest priority for Vail Resorts and no information collected through EPICMIX will be shared unless a guest ?opts in? and specifically chooses to share their information. All information collected through EPICMIX is subject to the strict privacy policies of VAIL RESORTS. Guests can choose to disable the RF chip in their pass to prevent any scanning. Children under 13 participating in EPICMIX will have limited features and a connection only through their parents? account.

?We created EpicMix to bring together the digital and physical experience of skiing and riding and make it easy to share your story with friends and family,? said ROB KATZ, VAIL RESORTS CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER. ?In its first season, we tracked your vertical feet and awarded digital pins for your special accomplishments on the mountain and in the second season, we re-imagined how we captured and delivered your vacation photos. For our third season, we have brought amateur ski racing into the 21st century with EPICMIX RACING. Working with World Champion ski racer LINDSEY VONN, we have completely redesigned how skiers can fully utilize the latest digital technology to compare themselves against the very best, seamlessly track and share all of their accomplishments and compete against racers from six world-class resorts.?

VONN will bring her passion for racing and online sharing to the EPICMIX community by providing tips on how to improve race times, the most effective training exercises, the best post-race stretches and her favorite workout tunes, which will be hosted on the web and mobile applications. These tips will be featured on?www.epicmix.com. And to support Lindsey?s commitment to giving back to the skiing community for future generations, VAIL RESORTS will donate one percent of all revenue to create scholarships at SKI & SNOWBOARD CLUB VAIL and other ski racing clubs at its resorts for aspiring young ski racers.

?Making ski racing fun and engaging for kids and families is an exciting opportunity and a real passion of mine,? said Lindsey Vonn.

Lindsay Vonn

?Growing up racing, I always looked forward to telling the stories of my races and being able to track my progress and see how my friends were doing. The opportunity to make that happen using the latest technology in social media is absolutely the right next step for ski racing and I was thrilled to be able to work with Vail Resorts to make this happen.?

Finally, the Company has created the LINDSEY VONN RACE SERIES, in which all skiers and riders will be ranked based on their best 10 races of the season. The top racers from across the six resorts will be invited to a grand finale event in April 2013, hosted by VONN, on the world-famous BIRDS OF PREY WORLD CUP COURSE at BEAVER CREEK.

ADVENTUROUS SPIRITS INVITED TO SIGN UP FOR INAUGURAL PACIFIC ROWING RACE FROM CALIFORNIA-HAWAII 2014

NEW OCEAN WAVE ANNOUNCE THE LAUNCH OF THE PACIFIC ROWING RACE ACROSS 2400 MILES OF PACIFIC OCEAN. NO ENGINE, NO SAILS, JUST MUSCLE.

More people have been into space than have rowed across an ocean. The majority of ocean rows have taken place over the same route across the Atlantic Ocean from east to west (Canary Islands to the Caribbean). Now, thanks to NEW OCEAN WAVE, ocean rowing is coming to the United States of America and to the largest ocean on the planet ? THE PACIFIC OCEAN.

The PACIFIC ROWING RACE starts in MONTEREY BAY, CALIFORNIA and finishes in HONOLULU, HAWAII, representing a new race route for intrepid individuals and crews. It is a route that has been completed by only a handful of row boats before. The PACIFIC ROWING RACE will increase that number significantly as up to 40 boats containing one, two or four adventurers from around the World set off from the start on 7th June 2014 and head west.

Roz Savage rows to Hawaii: Adventurous Spirits Invited to Sign up for Inaugural Pacific Rowing Race From California-Hawaii 2014

By participating in a race, the risks to those new to the sport are mitigated through rigorous entry requirements, pre-race scrutineering of boats and equipment as well as the support boats. The rewards, however, on offer to the intrepid few, are great. Many ocean rowers find their voyage a life-changing experience, boosting self-belief and opening up a whole new realm of what is possible.

The boats are ruggedly designed and purpose built using carbon fiber and Kevlar to make the boats as light and strong as possible. Boats are approximately 26ft long and 5ft wide and are just big enough to provide safe passage for all crew members for the duration of the challenge. Crews row round the clock taking it in turns to rest and eat. Each crew aims to complete the race without accepting outside assistance and will set out with everything they need including food, medical supplies and satellite communication equipment. The flotilla of crews will be shadowed by a number of support yachts who will
be able to provide assistance if it is required.

The race will be extremely challenging and will push the crews to their limits mentally, emotionally and physically. Each boat uses only human power, no sails, no engines, just muscle. Crews will take more than 1,000,000 oar strokes and consume more than 250,000 calories as they row 2400 miles across the Pacific Ocean in a journey will take them between 35 and 90 days. If previous ocean rows are anything to go by, crews may spend extended periods rowing naked as saltwater soaked clothing can chafe the skin.

The PACIFIC ROWING RACE is the brainchild of ocean rower CHRIS MARTIN who in 2009 became the first to row across the North Pacific in a pair from Japan to San Francisco. This journey took him and team mate MICK DAWSON over 6 months to complete. Martin, age 31, is a record setting ocean rower and ex-international athlete. He was a member of the GREAT BRITAIN ROWING SQUAD for six years, winning a medal at every WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. Following a period of prolonged illness and injury, he left the GB squad in 2003 and subsequently rowed across the ATLANTIC OCEAN in 2005. Martin then co-founded the ASSOCIATION OF OCEAN ROWERS to help others enjoy the sport that he had grown to love. In 2009, he joined forces with MICK DAWSON to become the first team to row across the NORTH PACIFIC from JAPAN to SAN FRANCISCO. Now the topic of a DISCOVERY CHANNEL documentary presented by JAMES CRACKNELL, the film tells the story of how their 189 day voyage across the Pacific became a titanic struggle for survival on the world?s largest ocean. Chris founded NEW OCEAN WAVE http://newoceanwave.com in 2011 to operate the PACIFIC ROWING RACE to give others the opportunity to row across oceans.

Chris explains how his experiences in the NORTH PACIFIC gave rise to the idea for the Pacific Rowing Race. ?In my row to San Francisco I experienced the most phenomenal feeling on the last day, stepping off a boat I had powered across the ocean using my own muscles. I want to provide our entrants with the chance to have the opportunity to experience the same incredible feeling. Once they have rowed an ocean, our competitors will never look at a globe in the same way again. Those entering the race will also get to experience sights that it is impossible to witness by any other means from whales swimming within feet of the boat to phosphorescence in the water at night, absolutely breath taking natural beauty.?

The last ocean rower to complete the route was environmental campaigner ROZ SAVAGE. ROZ SAVAGE http://rozsavage.com, age 44, is a British ocean rower and campaigner, who uses her seafaring adventures to inspire action on sustainability issues. She holds four world records for ocean rowing, including first woman to row solo across the ATLANTIC, PACIFIC and INDIAN OCEANS. She has rowed over 15,000 miles, taken around 5 million oarstrokes, and spent cumulatively over 500 days of her life at sea in a 23-foot rowboat. She is a UNITED NATIONS CLIMATE HERO, an ATHLETE AMBASSADOR for?350.org, and an AMBASSADOR FOR THE BLUE PROJECT. She is a FELLOW OF THE ROYAL GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY and the EXPLORERS CLUB. In 2010 she was named ADVENTURER OF THE YEAR by NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC. NEW OCEAN WAVE has recruited Roz as a race consultant to ensure all crews benefit from her unique knowledge of the route and her experience as the first female to row across all three of the world?s major oceans.
