WANNA BET?

I wanted Andy Murray. I ended up with Usain Bolt.

My fault, apparently, though I still would have liked to have gotten 5 quid down on Murray at 4-1 to win the Olympic tennis gold. Sweet redemption it would be for Murray after losing in the finals at Wimbledon. Sweet for my wallet, too.

Unfortunately, the tennis had already begun, so the clerk at the William Hill betting parlor on Pentonville Road couldn't book the ticket. So I went with a parlay of Bolt winning the 100- and 200-meter sprints and Jamaica winning the 4x100 relay.

Betting is a national pastime in England, and William Hill and Ladbrokes shops compete every few blocks around London. It's also one of the few places that take Olympic bets ? Vegas doesn't book them ? on everything from Michael Phelps winning two or more gold medals (4/6 odds) to opening ceremony director Danny Boyle getting a knighthood for his work getting the Olympics off to a good start (even money).

On a bustling Monday morning at the Pentonville Road shop, there wasn't much demand for Olympic action. A couple punters (British slang for bettors) were watching a telecast of greyhound racing from Sheffield, but the betting window was otherwise unoccupied.

I got my money in on Bolt and his teammates (at 2/1 odds), then added a bet on Ryan Lochte to win the 200-meter freestyle (3-1) on a lark.

Proof, perhaps, that not all the Olympic action takes place in official venues.

Rumor: Apple Was Mulling Big Stake in Twitter

Apple logo

Apple, reportedly in talks with Twitter over the past few months about taking a big stake in the microblogging service to help shore up its social networking deficiencies, hasn't reached a deal with the San Francisco startup, according to reports.

The size of the investment Apple had been mulling could have been "in the hundreds of millions of dollars," according to The New York Times, which cited unnamed sources as saying that talks in recent months put Twitter's valuation by Apple's lights at more than $10 billion, or at least $1.5 billion more than the company had been valued previously.

Neither Apple nor Twitter responded to PCMag's requests for comment.

The Wall Street Journal also reported late last week that talks between Apple and Twitter had occurred, but contra the Times, the Journal reported that they had happened more than a year ago.

Bloomberg, also reporting that the talks tailed off more than a year ago, reported this weekend that the discussions were no longer ongoing, though did point out that Apple's new Mountain Lion operating system has added direct support for Twitter.

Apple's lack of a social media presence is seen as a flaw in a company that has been arguably the most successful tech firm in the past five years. Of consumer technology's "Gang of Four" companies as named by Google chairman Eric Schmidt last year, Apple is most deficient in social media.

The others are Facebook, the largest social media company in the world, Google, which launched Google+ last year, and Amazon, which maintains lively forums for discussing books and other products it sells. Two more companies, Microsoft and Sony, run gaming networks associated with their Xbox and PlayStation consoles that are used by millions to collaborate and socialize.

China's corn harvest could rise more than forecast

China's corn production may rise this year more than many commentators have factored in thanks to "favourable" weather but consumption may be greater too, thanks to the disappointing wheat harvest.

China's corn harvest will increase by 6m-10m tonnes provided weather remains benign, the US Grains Council said, following tours of crops in Henan, Shandong and Hebei provinces, which are responsible for some 30% of the domestic harvest.

"China's corn crop looks good," Bryan Lohmar, USGC director in China, said.

While failing to put a figure on the harvest, the increase implies a more comfortable beat of last year's crop, believed to have set a record, than other analysts have factored in.

China's official CNGOIC crop bureau has estimated the harvest rising 5.75m tonnes to 197.5m tonnes, while the US Department of Agriculture foresees the crop increasing by 2.2m tonnes to 195.0m tonnes, estimates matched by the International Grains Council.

China's crop estimates are often the subject of some dispute, and often considered inflated thanks to a subsidy system which rewards regions based on their production.

Orders cancelled

For investors, China's corn crop is a sensitive point thanks to its potential impact on spurring the country's rise from a country self-sufficient to one widely expected to become a structural importer.

The USDA forecasts China's corn imports at 5.0m tonnes in 2011-12, and next season, up from less than 1m tonnes in 2010-11, and sees them topping 18m tonnes in a decade's time, making the country the top buyer, ahead of Japan and Mexico.

However, doubts over China's import demand were stoked last week by data showing that it had cancelled 240,000 tonnes of orders of US corn for 2012-13 delivery.

UBS on Friday revealed that it had cut by 3.5m tonnes, albeit to a relatively high 7.5m tonnes, its forecast for China's 2012-13 imports, citing better prospects for the domestic harvest.

The bank also said that corn currently down for delivery to China was actually being diverted to Japan and South Korea.

'Above-normal rains'

Morgan Stanley two weeks ago - while forecasting a drop to 190.0m tonnes in the Chinese harvest, an estimate based on historic yields acknowledged the potential for a far bigger crop, terming the harvest a "potential bright spot" on a corn output picture blotted by dismal prospects for US output.

"Early-season precipitation has averaged above-normal in the large corn and soybean-growing states of Jilin and Heilongjiang, as well as the Central China Plain," the bank said.

"China's 2012-13 production prospects remain a wild card for US export demand.

Wheat impact

"A Chinese yield as little as 0.09 tonnes per hectare (1.43 bushels per acre, or 2%) higher than trend could afford China the ability to hold 2012-13 imports flat year on year at 5m tonnes, instead of rising to 8m tonnes, as in our base case."

However, the US Grains Council, which promotes US grain exports, highlighted the impact of a disappointing Chinese wheat crop on its corn demand.

"There may be greater demand for corn since the country's winter wheat crop was adversely affected by disease and poor weather," Mr Lohmar said.

"This may result in less wheat being used in place of corn in animal feed, which may create additional demand for corn."

The CNGOIC pegs China's corn demand in 2012-13 at 199.0m tonnes, a rise of 11.0m tonnes, while the USDA puts it at 201.0m tonnes, an increase of 13.0m tonnes.

Bar?a Stereotype 2012 Friendly Matches | Morocco World News

By Rachid Acim

Morocco World News

Beni Mellal, Morocco, July 28, 2012

The very famous professional football club, F.C Barcelona led by its football legend Lionel Messi, has scheduled many friendly football matches across the globe. One football match of utmost importance to us as Moroccans is going to be played against a squad of players from the Raja team in the Grande Stade de Ibn Battouta in Tangier.

The stadium, which hosted the 2011 Troph?e des champions, has a capacity of 45,000 people. It will historicize a crucial instance for football playing as well as stereotyping.

None can deny that the friendly match will be a great opportunity for our football players to test out their football skills while playing face-to-face with these football giants who conquered the realm of football and started to teach the world both in theory and practice about it.

But as observers, we are no longer interested in the result of the match. For sure, the Moroccan football youngsters are so capable of altering the scale at any moment. They are at home and they can bring back the glory of Mexico1986 and thereby make fun of Messi or Xavi.

On the other hand, the friendly match will be a grand festivity for the Moroccan spectators to closely enjoy some of the techniques used by Messi and his teammates. To some Moroccans, the football match will be a mere waste of time; it has lost its value anyway, before it started

Initially, we firmly believed that sports, and football in particular, could bring people very close to each other. That?s a mere fantasy. Any football match starts friendly, but it ends sometimes tragically.

Football itself is not about friendship but true enmity. It is about triumph and defeat. Those who dominate the football match will go home happily ? full handed. And those who are going to lose will be blamed for bringing shame and dishonor to their country. In sum, they will be insulted and ridiculed by the media.

What will be the reaction if our players could not catch up with the rhythm of the match? I hope they will not surrender and they will continue to do marvels on the green soil of the stadium. Bar?a after all is not a monster to fear. They are an amalgam of players who do not play consistently sometimes.

The club, in my view, has lost its good reputation since the departure of the coach Pep Guardiola. The Bra?a players know that they have many fans in Morocco, but to whom the applause should go? It will be stupid and illogical to praise Messi and his fellows in one?s home.

Frankly enough, I will wholeheartedly applaud for the local Rajaoui players; they are playing for the sake of dignity ? notwithstanding the triviality of the match. The match is between humans, but while some can show astonishing collaboration, I?m afraid individualism can result in disastrous results.

We must be careful. We must besiege the legend and his fellows and teach them all what it means to be Moroccan. A goal can help eradicate these stereotypical views the Spaniards developed about us many centuries ago.

The Spaniards have lately again had a bad impression of us. This has historical roots as Mr. S. Bennis, a U.N counselor came to argue. ?The misunderstanding and mistrust that still prevail in relations between the two peoples [Moroccans & Spanish] are due to image and false stereotypes that each country spread about its adversary to denigrate it, thus, asserting the superiority of its religion over that of its rival.?

Such a view was previously held by J. Shaheen, who tackled stereotypes, prejudice and othering from a cinematographic standpoint in his notable book Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People. Mr. Shaheen argued that Hollywood had immense power in depicting certain ?others? as innately strange and dangerous. These ?others? are villains and foul creatures ? they are not like the rest of us.

Football is not safe from this others.

A strange video widely circulating now on Facebook has caught the attention of many Facebook users and subscribers. The video which does not exceed two minutes, portrays Bar?a football players as kids teasing everything and everyone in their friendly tour worldwide.

Humberg, the second largest city in Germany is delineated as a land of unexpected misfortunes. Tangier, the bride of the North in Morocco wherein the friendly match is going to take place is so ugly. It is, according to the video, a desert full of camel riders, human thirst and disappointment. Paris, the capital of France, is colored in green but it is less promising as Bar?elona or even Madrid. G?teborg, the over-populated and industrial city in Sweden is a place for fun and amusement for the players. Bucharest, ?the Little Paris? in Romania, is a city of thrill and panic.

Sadly, the video makes us more pessimistic about the friendly football match led by the Bar?a in Tangier.

You may agree that football is the most popular sport in the world. It can help promote many good values in people such as love, respect and friendship. But if ever the game is politicized, no need of it then.

Onslaught looms as Assad forces pound Aleppo rebels

AMMAN/BEIRUT (Reuters) - President Bashar al-Assad's artillery pounded rebel-held areas in and around Aleppo on Friday in preparation for an onslaught on Syria's biggest city where the United States has said it fears a "massacre" may be imminent.

Opposition sources said the shelling, which follows intensive ground and air bombardment, was an attempt to drive fighters inside Aleppo from their strongholds and to stop their comrades outside the city from resupplying them.

"They are shelling at random to instill a state of terror," said Anwar Abu Ahed, a rebel commander outside the city.

The battle for Aleppo, a major power centre that is home to 2.5 million people, is being seen as a potential turning point in the 16-month uprising against Assad that could give one side an edge in a conflict where both the rebels and the government have struggled to gain the upper hand.

A rebel commander said insurgents had attacked a convoy of Syrian army tanks heading towards the city, as the government continued to redeploy forces from other parts of the country to bolster its forces there.

The fate of Syria itself - an ethnically fragmented nation of 22 million people - is likely to determine the future of the wider region for years to come amid fears that its own sectarian tensions could spill across borders.

The U.S. State Department said credible reports of tank columns moving on Aleppo, along with air strikes by helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, represented a serious escalation of Assad's efforts to crush his opponents.

"This is the concern: that we will see a massacre in Aleppo, and that's what the regime appears to be lining up for," Victoria Nuland, a spokeswoman for the State Department, said.

Turkey, a former ally of Assad and now one of his fiercest critics, cheered on the rebels in Aleppo.

"In Aleppo itself the regime is preparing for an attack with its tanks and helicopters ... my hope is that they'll get the necessary answer from the real sons of Syria," Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said in remarks broadcast on Turkish TV channels.

As the remaining residents of Aleppo braced themselves for more bloodshed, General Robert Mood, the outgoing head of the U.N. monitoring mission, told Reuters he thought Assad's days in power were numbered.

"In my opinion it is only a matter of time before a regime that is using such heavy military power and disproportional violence against the civilian population is going to fall," the Norwegian general, who left Damascus on July 19, said.

Navay Pillay, the United Nations human rights chief, said a pattern had emerged as Assad's forces resorted to shelling, tank fire and door-to-door searches.

"All this, taken along with the reported build-up of forces in and around Aleppo, bodes ill for the people of that city," she said in statement.

MORTAR ROUNDS

Government troops stationed on the outskirts of the city unleashed barrages of heavy-caliber mortar rounds on its western districts, while Russian-built MI-25 helicopter gunships struck in the east, opposition activists inside the city said.

The heavy fighting follows an audacious bomb attack on July 18 that killed four of Assad's closest lieutenants in Damascus, a development that led some analysts to speculate that the government's grip was slipping.

In the first reported casualty on Friday, a man of about 60 wearing a traditional white prayer, outfit was killed near a park in Aleppo, while fighting spread across several neighborhoods.

A dawn bombardment killed five people who had been sheltering in a vegetable market. Video footage posted by opposition activists showed people gathering up the victims' body parts in plastic bags.

On Thursday, thirty-four people were killed in and around Aleppo, according to opposition activists, in an uprising that has cost the lives of 18,000 people across the country.

"The rebels have so far been nimble, and civilians have mostly been the victims of the bombardment," said activist Abu Mohammad al-Halabi, speaking by phone from the city.

Majed al-Nour, another activist, said rebels had attacked a security outpost in the neighborhood of Bustan al-Joz, which is close to Aleppo's city centre, on Thursday.

"The rebels are present in the east and west of the city, and have a foothold in areas of the centre. The regime forces control the entrances of Aleppo and the main thoroughfares and commercial streets and are bombarding the residential districts that fell into rebel hands," he said.

Nour said tens of thousands of people had fled Aleppo to nearby northern rural regions close to Turkey.

In the city, rebels have detained at least 100 Syrian officers, soldiers and pro-government militiamen this week, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition group, said.

A video posted on YouTube showed rebels with Kalashnikovs from "The Tawheed (monotheism) Brigade" guarding the detainees, who were lined up on a school playground.

HELICOPTERS OVER DAMASCUS

In Damascus on Friday, four helicopters flew over southern areas of the capital, firing heavy machine guns into the districts of Hajar al-Aswad and Tadamon as well as into the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp, a resident said.

"I can see two above me right now, heading towards Hajar al-Aswad," she said by telephone, the pounding of guns audible in the background. The helicopters were flying low and appeared to be targeting specific buildings.

Opposition sources said Syrian troops and armor entered Hajr al-Aswad on Friday, pursuing a counter-attack against rebel fighters that began last week.

With U.N. Security Council resolutions for sanctions against Syria vetoed by Russia and China for a third time last week, the United States has said it is stepping up assistance to Syria's fractured opposition, though it remains limited to non-lethal supplies such as communications gear and medical equipment.

Reuters has learned that the White House has crafted a presidential directive, called a "finding," that would authorize greater covert assistance for the rebels, but stop short of arming them.

It is unclear whether President Barack Obama has signed the document, a highly classified authorization for covert activity.

A Syrian parliamentarian, Ikhlas al-Badawi, from the northern province of Aleppo said on Friday she had fled to Turkey, becoming the first member of the rubber-stamp assembly dominated by Assad's Baath Party to defect.

Meanwhile, a source close to the mediation effort told Reuters on Friday that international mediator Kofi Annan was still trying to forge a political solution to the Syria crisis despite being made a scapegoat for the failure of the two sides to agree.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he was deeply concerned about reports that Syria could use chemical weapons and demanded that the government should state it would not use them "under any circumstances".

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said the Syrian government assault on Aleppo was an "utterly unacceptable escalation" of the conflict.

Samsung Jasper for Verizon leaks on Twitter, dualcore Snapdragon and ICS in tow

Such is the natural order of things. First the blurrycam, then the FCC sighting (albeit the Sprint version) and if you're lucky, a final juicy leak. This is the story of the Samsung Jasper for Verizon. Details of the mid-range chin-heavy phone just showed up on Twitter, and claim the device will have a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon MSM8960 processor, a mediocre 800 x 480 display and Android 4.0. The skinning looks lighter than some other Samsung attempts, and the buttons along the bottom are also a deviation from other recent big hitters. While the DNA all seems a bit familiar, it seems Verizon will finally have a version to call its own.

How Computer Forensics Solve Crime | Computer Forensics Training

Computer forensics is a science that involves using computer or connected data in relation with a law enforcement investigation to show as evidence in court. Though computer forensics have been around as long as the computer, this filed has seen many advancements over the last few years.

When computer forensics was new, it for the most part involved data dumps and making printed copies of each key stroke in the form of an eight digit group or binary codes that use zeros and ones. It could actually take a great deal of paper to print out the keystrokes in binary code. A system analyst would then translate each of the binary groups into hexadecimals and convert these into the real value of the keystroke. When this technique was used, it could pinpoint the location which caused the computer to malfunction. Just as all other forms of technology, computer forensics has come a long way since the early days of binary code.

Though computers still apply the old binary system, the way in which the utilities are developed and operated has changed considerably. This modern field has done an excellent job in keeping track of the advanced technology. It is possible to erase and entire hard drive but if there was not kind of conditional format( and on occasion non-format)the erased data can be restored. Getting back lost data calls for a computer expert that is knowledgeable in computer forensics to restore all the information that has been erased from the hard drive.? A computer forensics specialist receives the training needed to do this kind of process.

Computer forensics can do amazing things like track down emails, instant messages, and just about nay kind of electronic communication. This technology may come in handy especially with the rise in crimes today. The technology is so advanced it can tell the time and place the email was sent and it can actually detect emails being sent in real time. It can be baffling when you think about all the emails being dispatched at all times but the technology is always evolving at a more rapid pace even the technology used for investigation.

Computer forensics is a science not thought about much of the time but it has helped humankind immensely. It has been proven to be valuable in solving criminal cases and needs to be thought of a worthwhile technology in numerous ways. For certain, the interest in this filed has increased due to television and the study of it will continue to grow for some time to come.

Amped Wireless High Power Wireless-N Directional Dual Band USB Adapter UA2000

  • Amped Wireless High Power Wireless-N Directional Dual Band USB Adapter UA2000
  • Config Utility

Amped Wireless' High Power Wireless-N Directional Dual-Band USB Adapter (UA2000) ($90 direct) is an 802.11n dual-band USB adapter. USB adapters are used to give wireless connectivity to a computer that may not have a wireless card, such as an older desktop or a laptop. They can also be used to connect a machine with an older networking card to newer 802.11n wireless networks. Amped succeeds reasonably well at these tasks, and it also offers some useful additional features.

It's easy to install and, in my testing, extended my wireless range to a dead-spot when paired with Amped Wireless' High Power Wireless-N 600mW Gigabit Dual Band Router (R20000G). The UA2000 adapter is unique in that unlike most USB wireless adapters, it's a larger device that can stand atop a desk or clip to a notebook?it's not, in other words,? a small stick that fits into a USB port. Its large size makes it awkward to clip to a laptop screen and it can take up a good portion of the viewing area (especially since the vendor recommends facing it in the direction of the router for optimal performance) so it's not ideal for clipping to smaller netbooks and notebooks on the front of the screen.?

Another unique feature is that the adapter has two USB connectors. Connecting to two USB ports increases the power to the adapter, and as per the vendor, can maximize performance. You can, however, still use the adapter connected to just one USB port.

Setup
The adapter ships with a well-documented setup guide. The first and most critical step is to install the software before connecting the adapter. The UA2000 is supported on Windows and Mac OS X.

The CD automatically launches a splash page that allows you to install the software, watch an installation video, register the product, install a free Wi-Fi analytics tool, read user guides, or go to Web support. Plus, the splash page opens with a charming chime sound that makes the set up process quite an elegant affair.

Selecting the install software option actually installs the Amped Wireless Utility. When complete, you can connect the adapter to the machine.

I connected the adapter to two USB ports on an HP EliteBook 8440w running Windows 7. The HP notebook already has an on-board wireless adapter (which I use for testing routers). I was pleased to see that the Amped Wireless utility detected there were two cards and popped up a message asking me to disable a card. However, the message kept popping up now and again even after I disabled the on-board adapter; clearly a little more development work is needed there.

Completing installation requires a reboot. When the machine restarts, there is now an Amped Wireless Utility icon in the System Tray. Right-clicking on the icon gives three options: Launch Config Utility, Switch to AP Mode, and Exit.

Comment on ?Labels, trademarks, and foodspin? | Creativity ...

Comment on ?Labels, trademarks, and foodspin??Foodspin

The essay?Labels, trademarks, and foodspin? suggests that lousy food labeling be fixed by food labeling laws and their enforcement. This is a typical solution offered in United States culture, and it has its merits. When applied, it results in roughly the following: Obey this rule or there will be consequences when you disobey.

This approach suffers the following weaknesses: A rule breaker gets off scot-free if he, she, it does not get caught, is able to find a legal loophole, is able to exhaust an adversary by spending lots of money, or is not daunted by the legal consequences.

These weaknesses are economic. Money substitutes for good food or labels. You can get a good ?bottom line? by being a scofflaw. Some wealthy individuals are able to do any or all of these.

Corporations are often perfectly situated to do all of these. They avoid being ?caught? by hiding behind 800 phone numbers, setting up subsidiary corporations, etc. See the post, Tech Companies Leave Phone Calls Behind. They can mount fine tuned and expensive legal defenses. Or they can just pay civil damages or a fine. Often paying the damages or fine leaves the culprit well off, because net profit exceeds the loss imposed by a fine or damages. Finally, one of many contradictions created by the inadequately examined rule that corporations are constitutional ?persons? is that a human can be sent to prison, but not a corporation! This is called ?cost/benefit analysis? in current legal and business jargon. Many people in US culture celebrate this state of affairs with one liners like ?more power to you!?

These observations point to another weakness of the legalistic approach: Rules function best when the great majority of people wish to follow them without focussing on the legal consequences.?Instead, they find themselves focussing on the factual consequences: I want not to injure people. I want to be safe. I do not want to provide bad food or misleading information.

Before saying more about this, I wish to emphasize that sharp-edged enforced rules are important. The Anglo-American tradition of formal due process in criminal law is a fine example. Rules against bribery, official misconduct and corruption are other examples. I?d add that stringent international rules against leaders who wage aggressive war are yet another. The point is that law ?n order does not do the trick. On the other hand, community mores reflected in law do get the job done. (Mores??the conventions that embody the fundamental values of a group.? Of course, social order needs strong enforceable rules that are firmly and consistently enforced.

The community compliance model is readily observed in many social situations. Sports rules, safety practices, health regulations, emergency procedures tend to be embraced by the great majority of people. ?No one? wants to cheat on these rules. (We can quickly see that ?no one? is figurative; most folks want the mores to succeed. There will always be cheaters.) In a past which I can recall, automobile safety and courtesy standards were generally embraced: Pass on the left not the right, don?t weave, stop at red lights. watch out for pedestrians, slow down in the rain, etc. Don?t read while driving was a no brainer. The first time I saw a freeway driver reading a newspaper, was floored! That was in the mid 1970s, perhaps! Naive? Maybe so.

In any case, general driver discourtesy in northern California is so prevalent, that it goes largely unnoticed. The examples can hardly be exhausted. California has a law against handheld cellphone use while driving. The law is a farce; the rule is routinely flouted. Talking on a cellphone?handheld or not?is as dangerous as drunk driving. This is now commonly know and understood. See, e.g., Dangerous as Drunken Driving. Weaving on freeways is routinely seen. Slaughter and injury on the road are appalling. CDC Motor Vehicle Safety. Safety rules really work when people have regard for others and try to be safe.

Food production, preparation, and labeling are the same. They work best when the people involved want them to accomplish their goals?to provide good reliable food and choices. However, money driven corpocracy directly undermines such an attitude. In an old-fashioned market with direct producer-user contact, more or less everyone wanted good things to happen. ?You will be pleased with my flour!? This approach still prevails at farmer?s markets today.

In general, the bottom line profit motive needs to be undermined and replaced with pride in product, in work, and reasonable compensation for a job done.

A recent conversation demonstrated how the profit only motive has replaced ?old fashioned? norms of pride in workmanship and reasonable compensation. I had asked a friend how a business software that generated an analysis of a whole range of production data worked. First, he said, it was not useful for companies with fewer than, say several hundred employees. Second, its real purpose was to show which classes of customers cost the least to serve. ?The customers who cost you close to nothing to serve, those are the ones you want to get in your pool.? That friend, by the way, is personally committed to the ?old fashioned? mores, just described. But he has little control over the bottom line practices of corpocracy.

?Old fashioned? professionals, engineers, doctors, lawyers, used to take main pride in doing a really good job. They?d get paid! Sometimes not, but that was part of the whole deal, too. Finally, they were willing to give service away, because, after all, they were able to support themselves. No, they didn?t have to join a service club to offer these community supports. Now, even things like law practice are monetized in exactly the way my friend described. ?Profit? and law practice do not go together. (Profit = compensation in excess of expense, including work, skilled or plain labor.) Reasonable compensation is consistent, though. Again, many ?old fashioned? professionals operate on these value, but they do not constitute the predominant forces today.

What is advocated here is community commitment, not ?voluntarism.? Community commitment recognizes and embraces ?we are all in it together.? Therefore, we need rules, enforcement, and vast community resources. A ??cops ?n robbers? approach is not effective by itself. One sees a community spirit like this in wartime armies and to some degree after California earthquakes.

With global climate change, the acceptance of ?we are in it together will become inevitable! No longer will humans be able to separate themselves from neighbors and their real concerns. Well, that is not automatically so. A tribal, gated community, spirit may predominate in which the well armed are willing to sacrifice the rest?until the species itself perishes.

Corpocracy substitutes dollars and numbers for genuine human and planetary needs. Prosperous Americans kid themselves when they believe that their children and grandchildren will be protected if only the get the best education and succeed in corpocratic society. The planet can not support ?me first.? ?SILICON LAW NOTES, VOL. 1, #2, July 13, 2012 (hca)

EFSA: Food Safe from Animal Cloning

EFSA: Food Safe from Animal Cloning

EU- As far as food safety is concerned, there are no indications that differences exist between food products derived from healthy clones or their offspring ? in particular milk and meat - from those of healthy, conventionally bred animals, according to a new study from teh European Food Safety Authority.

However, in its scientific statement, EFSA said that it recognises that animal health and welfare concerns continue to be associated with this technology.

EFSA?s latest statement on animal cloning which has been produced on the request of the European Commission concurs that no new scientific information has become available since its previous 2010 statement that would require reconsideration of the Authority?s earlier conclusions and recommendations.

Moreover, new scientific information supports previous findings that:

?
  • With respect to food safety, for cattle and pigs there are no indications that differences exist for meat or milk products from healthy clones or from their offspring compared with those from healthy conventionally bred animals. Data on clones of farmed species for food production other than cattle and pigs remain limited and do not allow for the assessment of food safety and animal health and welfare aspects.
  • ?
  • The cloning technology using Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (SCNT) can produce healthy animal clones but during the SCNT cloning process, animal health and welfare remain a matter of concern mainly due the increased number of deaths at all stages of development (from the perinatal period until the juvenile stage, as well as mortality through abortion). Importantly however, these concerns do not affect offspring of clones born through conventional breeding as they appear to develop normally.
  • ?
  • From the limited data available, there are no scientific indications that would suggest a risk to genetic diversity, biodiversity or the environment from farmed clones when compared to conventionally bred farmed animals.
  • ?
  • Continued research with farmed animals for the optimisation of the different steps of SCNT cloning has resulted in increased knowledge since EFSA?s last statement on this issue. Limited improvements were shown by some researchers but so far have not led to the significant enhancement of the overall efficiency of cloning.

EFSA?s statement also provides information on the current efficiency of cloning in comparison to assisted reproductive technologies using in vitro embryos.

Tomas Lopez, Lifeguard Fired For Saving Man Outside His Coverage Zone, Offered Old Job Back

Fired Florida lifeguard Tomas Lopez, who was let go earlier this week for saving a swimmer outside his jurisdiction, has been offered his old job back.

His response: Thanks but no thanks.

"It's another chapter in my life closed and I am just going to continue to get my schooling finished and get on with my career," Lopez told CNN.

The much-publicized incident took place at Hallandale Beach, north of Miami, on Monday, when Lopez instinctively went after a drowning man.

Lopez said the man had turned blue and "was having a lot of trouble breathing." He was outside Lopez's coverage zone, though, so he got fired.

The pink slip was handed down by Jeff Ellis Management Co., which says lifeguards are not insured outside the beach for which they are responsible.

Ellis told CNN on Thursday: "Clearly, he should not have been terminated for what had occurred. I know that he has tried to do the right thing."

"I have no doubts I did the right thing," Lopez, who said he knew the rules but acted anyway, told CNN in the aftermath of his pink slip.

"I believe I did what was right, and that if someone needs help you're going to go help them, regardless if you're a lifeguard or not."

Three other lifeguards quit in protest and two others were dismissed after saying they would have followed Tomas Lopez's example.

As for the drowning victim, a nurse on the beach assisted him until EMTs arrived. He is said to be in good condition as of Friday, CNN reports.
