Zynga game 'The Ville' lets you (virtually) get it on

3 hrs.

Things are getting hot and heavy in Zynga's newest Facebook game.?That is, if you consider some PG-rated?virtual sex to be hot and heavy.?

Following the success of games like "FarmVille," "CityVille" and "CastleVille," Facebook gaming giant?Zynga this week?launched its latest Ville game which is called simply?"The Ville."

This strategy-based life simulation?game lets players create a personalized avatar, build a home and live out virtual relationships.?And according to Zynga executive producer David Gray who spoke to CNET, the avatars in the game can (gasp!) make whoopee. Yes, whoopee.

Gray told CNET that it works like this:

...when someone is in your house and you begin to interact with them, you can level up by interacting with them in ways that the game sees as romantic. As you climb the experience tree, you eventually unlock the capability to initiate the "happiness home run," or just "whoopee"

Based on some of?the breathy Zynga?sex-related headlines making the Internet rounds this week (the above one included), this virtual sex business?may sound like?risque?stuff.

It is not.

Prudes (or concerned parents) can rest assured, making whoopee is pretty tame stuff. There is, apparently, partial disrobing before floating hearts cover the bedroom. Hide?your eyes! It's FLOATING HEARTS!?

Meanwhile, Zynga's frisky avatars are hardly the first to get it on Facebook style.

It's not an overstatement to say that "The Ville" has taken a whole lot of cues from the long-running, best-selling "Sims" games from?Electronic Arts -- and specifically from the new "Sims Social" game on Facebook. And those randy?Sims characters have been making quite a lot of woo-hoo (not to be confused with whoopee)?on Facebook for months now.

In fact,?In January, EA released this?infographic, announcing that "Sims Social" avatars make whoo-hoo?680,000 times per day. And here is the whoo-hoo in action. C'mon,?you know you want to see it:

Winda Benedetti writes about video?games for msnbc.com. You can follow her tweets about games and other things?on Twitter?here?@WindaBenedetti?and you?follow her?on Google+. Meanwhile, be sure to check?out the?IN-GAME?FACEBOOK PAGE?to discuss the day's?gaming news and reviews.?

TRMM Satellite measures Debby's drenching Florida rains

Debby's highest rainfall totals from June 20-27 are in excess of 380 mm (~15 inches, shown in purple). The heaviest rains cover a wide patch of central Florida from around Titusville on the east coast to around Homosassa Springs on the west coast within which amounts exceed 260 mm (~10 inches, shown in orange) to over 380 mm in the center. Another band of heavy rain runs east-west across no.Florida from Jacksonville to near Tallahassee. The highest totals are around Lake City and exceed 380 mm. Credit: Credit: NASA/SSAI, Hal Pierce

NASA's TRMM satellite provided data that allowed scientists to calculate Tropical Storm Debby's rainfall totals across Florida. The highest rainfall totals from June 20-27 topped 380 mm (~15 inches) in a wide patch of central Florida from around Titusville on the east coast.

Even though it never became more than a tropical storm, the residents of northern and central Florida will remember Debby. Debby, which formed as a tropical storm on the 23rd of June 2012 in the central Gulf of Mexico, took three full days to reach the Big Bend of Florida just 350 miles away. Although the center didn't make landfall until around 5 p.m. EDT on the afternoon of June 26 when it crossed the coast near Steinhatchee, Florida, Debby's effects were felt well away from the center.

Most of the rain and weather associated with Debby were well to the north and east of the center over Florida, which was effectively inundated with rain squalls originating over the Gulf and wrapping around the eastern side of the storm for 3 days. The result was copious amounts of rain over the central and northern parts of the state in addition to an outbreak of tornadoes over central and southern Florida on June 24.

In addition to capturing detailed images of tropical storms, TRMM is ideally suited to measure rainfall from space. TRMM is a joint mission between NASA and the Japanese space agency JAXA.

NASA's TRMM satellite captured rainfall rates within Tropical Depression Debby on June 27. The yellow, green and blue areas indicate light-to-moderate rainfall between 20 and 40 millimeters (.78 to 1.57 inches) per hour. The red area is considered heavy rainfall at 2 inches/50 mm per hour. Credit: Credit: NASA/SSAI, Hal Pierce

For increased coverage, TRMM is used to calibrate rainfall estimates from other additional satellites. The TRMM-based, near-real time Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. is used to estimate rainfall over a wide portion of the globe. TMPA rainfall totals are shown here for the 7-day period June 20 to 27, 2012 over and around Florida.

TRMM data showed that the highest rainfall totals for the period are in excess of 380 mm (~15 inches). The heaviest rains cover a wide patch of central Florida from around Titusville on the east coast to around Homosassa Springs on the west coast within which amounts exceed 260 mm (~10 inches) to over 380 mm (~15 inches) in the center. Another band of heavy rain is oriented east-west across northern Florida from Jacksonville to near Tallahassee with similar amounts or rain. The highest totals in the band occur around Lake City and exceed 380 mm (~15 inches). This east-west band can be attributed to the interaction of Debby's counterclockwise circulation with the coast and a frontal boundary draped across southern Georgia in an east-west orientation.

After coming ashore, Debby was downgraded to a tropical depression as it crossed northern Florida.

At 5 p.m. EDT on June 27, Debby lost tropical characteristics and became a post-tropical cyclone over the Atlantic Ocean. At that time Debby had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kmh) and it was located about180 miles (295 km) east of St. Augustine, Fla., near 29.5 North and 78.3 West.

On Thursday, June 28, 2012 at 8 a.m. EDT, the National Hurricane Center noted that showers and thunderstorms associated with post-tropical storm Debby were about 175 miles west-northwest of Bermuda. The shower and thunderstorm activity increased today and the winds are between 15 and 20 mph.Post-tropical Storm Debby continues to move to the northeast and the National Hurricane Center noted that it has a 10 percent chance of re-generating.

Biodegradable artery graft will enhance bypass surgeries

ScienceDaily (June 24, 2012) ? With the University of Pittsburgh's development of a cell-free, biodegradable artery graft comes a potentially transformative change in coronary artery bypass surgeries: Within 90 days after surgery, the patient will have a regenerated artery with no trace of synthetic graft materials left in the body.

Research published online June 24 in Nature Medicine highlights work led by principal investigator Yadong Wang, a professor in Pitt's Swanson School of Engineering and School of Medicine's Department of Surgery, who designed grafts that fully harness the body's regenerative capacity. This new approach is a philosophical shift from the predominant cell-centered approaches in tissue engineering of blood vessels.

"The host site, the artery in this case, is an excellent source of cells and provides a very efficient growth environment," said Wang. "This is what inspired us to skip the cell culture altogether and create these cell-free synthetic grafts."

Wang and fellow researchers, Wei Wu, a former Pitt postdoctoral associate (now a postdoctoral associate at Yale University), and Robert Allen, a PhD student in bioengineering, designed the graft with three properties in mind. First, they chose a graft material -- an elastic polymer called PGS -- that is resorbed quickly by the body. Then, they examined graft porosity and selected parameters that allow immediate cell infiltration. Wang's team borrowed a procedure developed by another team of Pitt researchers -- David Vorp, professor of bioengineering and surgery, and William R. Wagner, interim director of the University's McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine and a Pitt professor of surgery, bioengineering, and chemical engineering -- wrapping the vascular graft with a fibrous sheath to trap the cells. Finally, Wang and his fellow researchers wanted a coating for the grafts that would reduces blood clotting and bind many growth factors, so they used heparin, a molecule that does just that.

"The results were porous grafts that are suturable," said Wang. "And the rapid remodeling of the grafts led to strong and compliant new arteries. The extent of the changes in the grafts that occurred in just 90 days was remarkable."

Wang and his colleagues made grafts as small as 1 mm in diameter and monitored the graft's transformation in vivo for three months. Because the graft was highly porous, cells were easily able to penetrate the graft wall, and mononuclear cells occupied many of the pores within three days. Within 14 days, smooth muscle cells -- an important blood vessel builder -- appeared. At 28 days, cells were distributed more evenly throughout the graft. At 90 days, most inflammatory cells were gone, which correlated with the disappearance of the graft materials. The artery was regenerated in situ and pulsed in sync with the host. Furthermore, the composition and properties of the new arteries are nearly the same as native arteries.

"This report is the first that shows a nearly complete transformation of a synthetic plastic tube to a new host artery with excellent integration within three months," said Wang. "Most likely, the amount of time it takes to regenerate an artery can be further shortened as we refine the system."

Current approaches toward tissue-engineered arteries require a long production cycle because of the required cell culture steps. The newly developed graft is made in a few days, stores in a dry pouch at ambient temperature, and is readily available off the shelf. The ease of use and storage are similar to the conventional Dacron? grafts.

A Guide To New Homes: Looking At The Bigger Picture

Owning a home is part of the American Dream. Upon reaching that point in life when you are ready to make the big buy, it is important to know how to go about it to avoid making costly mistakes. Expect that the home buying process will be exciting and stressful at the same time, but will be worth it in the end if you make the right moves. Here's a quick guide to help you look at the bigger picture before searching for new homes. Most first time homebuyers often find themselves caught in the whirlwind of finding the perfect house. While the features and fixtures of the structure itself are important, it should not be your immediate priority. It makes more sense to look at the bigger picture before scrutinizing aspects like the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, garage space, and kitchen size.

Location is everything when it comes to new homes for sale. After all, what good are all your dream features if thehouse is in the middle of nowhere? Carefully choosing the community is the first step to a worthwhile investment. Be a smart buyer and keep the following pointers in mind.

City versus the Suburb

Decide whether you want a property in the city or one in the immediately surrounding area. It is the first major decision you have to make and your choice dictates everything else that follows. Think about your budget and the lifestyle you wish to live. Do you want to be close to where the action is all the time? Do you prefer something more laidback but with easy access to a cosmopolitan lifestyle? Answering these questions will help you decide which area to focus on when searching for new homes.

Where you choose to livewillnarrow down your choices in terms of the type of new homes for sale. For example, the city might have more options for condominiums than detached houses, and vice versa for the metro area. This aspect also lays out your options for schools, work, and entertainment.

Economic Stability

General rule of thumb is to buy a home where the economy is flourishing or on the rise. Properties in such locations are good investments because prices are competitive and resale value is high. Thriving cities are also usually host to big industries. This is ideal especially if you seek new job opportunities or career growth to provide for a growing family.

New homes for sale in economically stable locations normally have bigger business districts offering you more choices for entertainment and recreation. Major cities may also be home to bigger school districts providing education across all levels. This is an important inquiry especially if you are interested in a master's or doctoral degree, or want to send your kids to a good school.

Government Services

The last significant concern when choosing a location for new homes is local government services. What's available in terms of hospitals? Does the place have reliable police and fire department services? Are there parks and athletic facilities you can use? These are important aspects most homebuyers tend to overlook. Be a smart buyer and go over all these related aspects before looking into properties one-by-one.

Analysis: Tough task for Sandusky defense

Abby Drey / Centre Daily Times via AP

Joe Amendola, left, attorney for Jerry Sandusky, loads boxes of files into his car after the trial adjourned Thursday.

By Wes Oliver, Special to msnbc.com

ANALYSIS

At the end of the first week of Jerry Sandusky?s sex abuse trial, the prosecution's case is nearly done.? The defense case will begin Monday.? For a number of reasons, the defense has a very difficult task in overcoming the evidence presented.?

No one thought the prosecution's case was weak going into this trial and it wasn't.? There were eight witnesses who claimed that Sandusky had inappropriate contact with them -- from bizarre hugging in the Penn State showers to much more serious and disturbing conduct.? There were two independent witnesses: Mike McQueary, the then-graduate assistant football coach who said he saw Sandusky in the shower with a boy, and the janitor whose colleague allegedly said he? saw Sandusky?performing oral sex on a boy in the shower.? And then there were Sandusky's own words in letters?to one of his accusers and a bizarre contract with one of the alleged victims calling on him to pay the boy to spend time with Sandusky.?

So far during this trial, however, Joe Amendola has done a very good job representing his client.??

?

A?lawyer is only as good as his case and this was a case that had to go to trial.? The state could not offer?Sandusky anything short of an effective life sentence.??If convicted of?just one of the most serious offenses against even one of the victims,?Sandusky must serve a minimum of 10 years, with a possible maximum of 40.? There are six victims for whom offenses carrying 10-year mandatory minimums are charged.?Then there are a variety of other charges.?No doubt?if convicted of all the?offenses, the judge will order some of the sentences to run concurrently, but theoretically?Sandusky could be ordered to serve more than 500 years.?The state could not have make?an offer that would be anything less than a life sentence.? Amendola had to go to trial, regardless of the strength of the prosecution's case.?

Full coverage of the Jerry Sandusky trial

Legal analysis by Wes Oliver

But Amendola's case is not that strong.??And?he had a difficult task of cross-examining victims who allege molestation.??Throughout the trial, he did?a wonderful job of?confronting the alleged?victims with problems?with their testimony without alienating the?jury by attacking them.? This is a difficult tight rope to?walk and he did so admirably.??

He also exposed some real problems?with?some of their testimony.???

Most of the victims have changed their story -- some of them since their grand jury testimony, which was made public in November.? Some of the victims continued to have friendly relationships with Sandusky as adults, years after the alleged abuse.??A number of them testified that they remembered new details, or changed their view of Sandusky, only upon reflection or after counseling.? One?testified he became angry with Sandusky for the first time when Sandusky cut off contact with him.?Finally,?Amendola?did a very nice job?in demonstrating that physical evidence corroborating the?final victim's story was missing and that this victim claimed to have been the only boy?at?Sandusky's house?during?a period when other alleged?victims also claimed?to have been there.?

These problems with the victims' testimony, well-developed by the defense, will likely not be enough to overcome the prosecution's case.? The?number of victims, the independent witnesses, and the defendant's own words appear to make anything?other than a conviction on a number of these counts a very remote possibility.

Poland looked befuddled at Euro

source: Getty Images

Man of the Match: Tomas Hubschman started this tournament on the bench, something which lasted all of 45 minutes. After the Czech Republic were?dissected?by Russia, he reclaimed his place in the team, and the Czechs haven?t lost since.

On Saturday, he did everything you?d want a deep-lying midfielder to do. He broke up anything Poland tried to build through the middle, forcing them wide before trying to come in. His passing brought them out of their third and enabled them to control the game from the 30-minute mark on, serving as the team?s main point of distribution. And on the goal, he was the man who started the movement, springing the Czechs on the counter.

It was the most complete performance we?ve seen this tournament from somebody playing that role.

NBC Sports: Czechs beat Poland 1-0 to advance to quarterfinals

Packaged for takeaway:

  • If Hubchmann hadn?t started the movement on the goal, Czech winger?Vaclav Pilar would have been Man of the Match. Consider all the superlatives I just handed Hubschmann, and the consider how good Pilar must have been to have outperformed him.
  • Pilar, deployed on the same side as Poland?s?Jakub Blaszczykowski, had a huge defense assignment, and in that phase of the game, you often saw him himself just in front of left back David Limbersky (who, like Hubschman, had his second very good great since put into the starting lineup). Still, he was able to get forward, provide the Czechs? most consistent threat in attack, and take apart somebody many consider to be the world?s best right back: Poland?s?Lukasz Piszczek.
  • The Czech Republic?s right back, Theodor Gebre Selassie, had another great day and should draw looks from teams in bigger leagues. The 25-year-old from Slovan Liberec in the Czech Republic had four instances in the first hour where he blew down the right flank and got crosses into the penalty area. He also played well in his own end. Who knows if this is a regular thing for him, but I?d love to find out. If it is, there are few clubs in the world he wouldn?t help, if only as an option coming off the bench.
  • If, at the start, the Czechs had assumed Greece could win, this could have been a much more entertaining game. Michael Bilek, however, assumed Russia would win and had his team play somewhat conservatively through the first 45 minutes (thinking a draw would get them through). Imagine his surprise at halftime when he learned Greece was up.
  • Through the game?s first 30 minutes, Poland seemed the better side. They were getting a lot of good holdup and distribution work from striker?Robert Lewandowski, who consistently drew fouls that set up set pieces delivered beautifully by Ludovic Obraniak.
  • Blaszczykowski was also very active, pushing forward and in from this right midfield position to link up with Lewandowski. Franciszek Smuda seemed to have something going when he?d put Obraniak and Blaszczykowski on the same side ? a combination that created the goal against Russia. Though Poland lost control of the game for the first half?s last 15 minutes, you could see why Smuda left his team unchanged to start the second.
  • But the Czech Republic retained control coming out of break, control they?re maintain through the final whistle. Unfortunately, it didn?t lead to many opportunities, as Tomas Rosicky?s injury and Milan Baros?s disappearing act left them dependent on Pilar and Petr Jiracek?performing magic wide.
  • Poland eventually had to push and started sending their fullbacks forward. In the 72nd minute, Hubschman started a counter that ended up at Baros?s feet. He played left to the oncoming Petr Jiracek, who cut back onto his right foot to beat Prezmyslaw Tyton from ?12 yards out.
  • On the play, right center half Marcin Wasilewski appeared to have Jiracek in front of him before, while planting to stop moving right, he slipped, fell, and couldn?t contest the shot. It had been raining off and on during the first half, and the field conditions may have played a part in Wasilewski losing his footing.
  • In the 94th minute, Michal Kadlec saved the Czech?s quarterfinal berth. A draw would have dropped them from first to third, and when Poland caught the Czechs too narrow and created a chance on the right for Blaszczykowski, it looked like Russia were back in first. Kadlec raced back to the line and got behind a ball Kuba had to place toward the left side of goal. His headed clearance just in front of the line kept the Czechs in first.
  • For Poland, the tournament played out like a team not knowing how to get the points they need in this format. They let a 10-man Greece come back and draw, while Saturday they failed to follow through on a good start, letting the Czech Republic gain control of the game before Greece had forced the issue. Yet against Russia on Tuesday, they played very well. They qualified for Euro 2008, so most of the players should be familiar with this kind of tournament soccer. Perhaps expectations got the best of them.
  • For the Czech Republic, they finish first despite having the group?s worst goal difference, and it?s not exactly clear how good they are. They?ll get the second place team from Group B in the quarterfinals.

Polish police on high alert for hooligan violence

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:54 p.m. ET June 16, 2012

WARSAW, Poland (AP) - Dozens of Polish police wearing full riot gear kept a close watch on Russian soccer fans heading to their country's European Championship game against Greece on Saturday.

Around 20,000 Russians were expected to attend the match in Warsaw, and authorities have been worried about the potential for more trouble after disturbances between Polish and Russian hooligans on Tuesday led to a few dozen injuries and more than 200 arrests.

As Saturday's game approached, thousands of Russians poured across a bridge to the National Stadium. There were no immediate reports of violence, and the atmosphere appeared to be calm and good-natured. Noisy groups of fans, some wrapped in Russian flags, chanted "We have come to win" and "Russia can only win." One Russian had a photo taken with a riot officer and shook his hand.

Russian fans also waved to Polish supporters going in the opposite direction to a fan zone in downtown Warsaw, in contrast to tensions and scattered outbreaks of violence Tuesday. Earlier Saturday, reports from border crossings said fewer Russian fans were coming than expected and that the mood was friendly.

Tuesday's fighting came as thousands of Russians marched over the bridge to the stadium for the highly charged Poland-Russia game that later ended in a 1-1 tie. It came on the Russia Day holiday and the Russians marched in a group, waving flags and nationalist symbols. The mass expression of Russian patriotism in Warsaw's capital was provocative to some Poles, who still deeply resent Moscow's imposition of communism here during the Cold War.

One of the worst cases of violence involved police firing rubber bullets and tear gas at young Polish men who attacked them with stones and bottles. Another scuffle near the stadium was apparently started by Russians.

(AP) ? An unmanned Air Force space plane steered itself to a landing early Saturday at a California military base, capping a 15-month clandestine mission.

The spacecraft, which was launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida in March 2011, conducted in-orbit experiments during the mission, officials said. It was the second such autonomous landing at the Vandenberg Air Force Base, 130 miles northwest of Los Angeles. In 2010, an identical unmanned spacecraft returned to Earth after seven months and 91 million miles in orbit.

The latest homecoming was set in motion when the stubby-winged robotic X-37B fired its engine to slip out of orbit, then pierced through the atmosphere and glided down the runway like an airplane.

"With the retirement of the Space Shuttle fleet, the X-37B OTV program brings a singular capability to space technology development," said Lt. Col. Tom McIntyre, the X-37B's program manager. "The return capability allows the Air Force to test new technologies without the same risk commitment faced by other programs. We're proud of the entire team's successful efforts to bring this mission to an outstanding conclusion."

With the second X-37B on the ground, the Air Force planned to launch the first one again in the fall. An exact date has not been set.

The twin X-37B vehicles are part of a military program testing robotically controlled reusable spacecraft technologies. Though the Air Force has emphasized the goal is to test the space plane itself, there's a classified payload on board ? a detail that has led to much speculation about the mission's ultimate purpose.

Some amateur trackers think the craft carried an experimental spy satellite sensor judging by its low orbit and inclination, suggesting reconnaissance or intelligence gathering rather than communications.

Harvard astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell, who runs Jonathan's Space Report, which tracks the world's space launches and satellites, said it's possible it was testing some form of new imaging.

The latest X-37B was boosted into orbit atop an Atlas 5 rocket. It was designed to stay aloft for nine months, but the Air Force wanted to test its endurance. After determining the space plane was performing well, the military decided in December to extend the mission.

Little has been said publicly about the second X-37B flight and operations. At a budget hearing before the Senate Armed Services subcommittee in March, William Shelton, head of the Air Force Space Command, made a passing mention.

That the second X-37B has stayed longer in space than the first shows "the flexibility of this unique system," he told lawmakers.

Defense analysts are divided over its usefulness.

Joan Johnson-Freese, professor of national security affairs at the Naval War College, said such a craft could give the U.S. "eyes" over conflict regions faster than a satellite.

"Having a vehicle with a broad range of capabilities that can get into space quickly is a very good thing," she said.

Yousaf Butt, a nuclear physicist and scientific consultant for the Federation of American Scientists, thinks the capabilities of the X-37B could be done more cheaply with a disposable spacecraft.

"I believe one of the reasons that the mission is still around is institutional inertia," he said.

The arc of the X-37 program spans back to 1999 and has changed hands several times. Originally a NASA project, the space agency in 2004 transferred it to the Pentagon's research and development arm, DARPA, and then to the secretive Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been poured into development, but the current total spent remains a secret.

Built by Boeing Government Space Systems, a unit of the company's satellite manufacturing area, the 11,000-pound space plane stands 9 1/2 feet tall and is just over 29 feet long, with a wingspan of less than 15 feet. It possesses two angled tail fins rather than a single vertical stabilizer. Once in orbit, it has solar panels that unfurl to charge batteries for electrical power.

McDowell of the Jonathan's Space Report sees a downside. He noted it'll be tough for the Air Force to send up such planes on short notice if it has to rely on the Atlas V rocket, which requires lengthy preparations.

"The requirement to go on Atlas V is a problem; they may need to look at a new launch vehicle that would be ready to go more quickly," he said.

Photography For Real Estate ? The Arithmetic Of Real Estate ...

I?ve talked about this before but it?s super important so it is useful to keeping coming at the subject from different angles. It?s clear a lot of folks don?t understand this. Back in Feb I did a high level discussion of all the pricing factors you should consider. Here I want to look closer at making sure your shoot price is recovering all your costs of being in business.

First of all your shoot price has several components:

  • Your fixed costs: These are all fixed costs of being in business. It?s called fixed because it doesn?t depend on how many shoots you do a year. Fixed costs are things like your gear, replacing your gear periodically, Insurance, your vehicle, your computer and software etc.
  • Your variable costs: These are the costs like gas and vehicle?maintenance. They are called variable because the more shoots you do the bigger this cost is.
  • Your profit: Not much?explanation needed here. You probably want to look at this from the point of view of how many hours you are putting into a shoot on the average so you know what you are getting paid per hour so you can compare it to what you may get doing something else.

So with this terminology here is the arithmetic:

Shoot price = (Fixed costs)/(average shoots per year) + Variable cost per shoot + Shoot?Profit

In real estate photography the variable costs and profit are easy to understand. Everybody understands gas and oil costs. The fixed costs are where everyone seems to have difficulty and people get confused! If you are running a sustainable business (one that will support yourself and your family with over a time frame of years) you have to recover all your fixed costs of being in business or over time you will actually loose money and perhaps you?d better find a different job. When I calculate?(Fixed costs)/(average shoots per year) +?Variable cost per shoot for me personally the number comes out to $60.86. In past posts and in my Business of Real Estate Photography eBook I call this the cost of showing up because that?s pretty much what it is, your cost to show up at the property before you start doing anything.

When I see some one with shoot prices less than $60 or not much higher than $60 it sets off alarms in my head. Sure there are variations in cost of living but I live in Salem, OR and even though it?s the capital of OR it?s a pretty rural, backward little town and the cost of living here is literally half of what it is in Seattle where I?ve spent most of my life. I now go out of my way to talk to real estate photographers who have what appear to me to be crazy low prices. Here are the situations I always find:

  1. They are not recovering all their fixed costs. The don?t include costs like gear replacement every 3 or 4 years or vehicle replacement or professional insurance etc. This means that the longer they stay in business the bigger an economic hole they are getting into. So being in business is actually hurting them economically in the long run.
  2. They are for, various reasons, not including all or any of the fixed costs of doing business. So they are behaving like they have low or no fixed costs. Reasons I hear are things like a) their spouse has a real job and is paying all the fixed costs, b) they are retired and don?t have to include all their fixed costs or c) they have another real job and are only doing real estate photography part time and don?t have to recover all the costs. In these cases they are picking up some extra money and are able to make their phone ring by just keeping their price?unrealistically?low.

Even though #2 is not hurting the photographers that do it is hurting all the other full time real estate photographers in their local market both now and in the future. They are effectively breaking the local real estate photography market because a) they are competing with unrealistic fixed costs and b) they are establishing unrealistic price expectations in their market. Sometimes you can spot photographers that are engaging in item 2 above because their quality is low, but not always. Once a few photographers using low prices like to make a few easy bucks it doesn?t take long before it becomes difficult or impossible for a full time real estate photographer to recover all their costs in this broken market.

WWE Studios secures the rights to "Interrogation"

WWE Studios announced today it has secured the rights to "Interrogation," a suspense thriller by Adam Rodin.

With a bomb set to go off in Las Vegas on one of the busiest betting days of the year, the story focuses on a brilliant interrogator called in to question the prime suspect. As time runs out, we soon learn there's an even bigger plan in place for both of them.

" 'Interrogation' is a white-knuckle ride, filled with unexpected twists and turns," WWE Studios President Michael Luisi said. "We are excited to begin work on Adam?s engaging screenplay."

Rodin was repped by Caren Bohrman at the Bohrman Agency. Bradley Buchanan, VP of Business and Legal Affairs, and Richard Lowell, Senior Director of Development, negotiated on behalf of WWE Studios.
