Jason Derulo Promises 'High-Energy' MTV New Year's Set

Singer will perform on MTV's 'NYE in NYC 2012' along with Mac Miller, Selena Gomez and J. Cole.

It's almost that time to ring in the new year, and what better way to do so than with MTV? "NYE in NYC 2012" will air live at 11 p.m. ET on Saturday from Times Square, hosted by Demi Lovato and Tyler Posey of "Teen Wolf."

Also on hand to count down will be some of music's biggest stars, including J. Cole, Mac Miller, Selena Gomez and Jason Derülo, who will be performing in our Times Square studios.

"I cannot think of another way to bring the new year in than with MTV." Derülo told MTV News. "I'm excited — new year, new beginnings."

Derülo plans to excite the crowd with two hit songs from his sophomore album, Future History, which was released earlier this year.

"I'll be doing 'It Girl' and 'Don't Wanna Go Home,' a medley of the two," Derülo revealed. "[There will] be a lot of high-energy dancing."

Derülo isn't just gearing up for his own performance, he's excited to see what his fellow performers have in store for the big night.

"It's going to be a crazy show, I hope you guys are tuning in because lots of great performers," Derülo said. "You have different flavors from all around."

Of course, with a new year comes a new resolution, so what will Derülo be doing differently in 2012? "Not being late to a lot of places." Derülo said. "I don't want to say I'm usually late; I'm fashionably late. I think being 20 minutes is a little too much, but if you're in the 15 margin, I think you're golden."

Fans can go to our "NYE in NYC 2012" page to take a look back at past MTV New Year's bashes and this year's biggest highlights.

Don't miss MTV's "NYE in NYC 2012," kicking off at 11 p.m. ET on Saturday, New Year's Eve.

OU football notebook: Sooners sign another junior-college player

Related Story: OU not panicking over lack of numbers at receiver

The Sooners are losing starting ends Frank Alexander and Ronnell Lewis to the NFL. Nelson gives them another option among replacements, along with experienced contributors David King and R.J. Washington and redshirt freshmen Chuka Ndulue and Geneo Grissom.

Nelson was named 2011 Jayhawk Conference Defensive Player of the Year after making 96 tackles. He was credited with 9.5 sacks, 15.5 tackles for lost yardage, four pass breakups and four forced fumbles.

Nelson, originally from Columbus (Ohio) Beechcroft High School, will have two years of eligibility at OU. He is the Sooners' third junior college signee, joining cornerback Kasseim Everett and tight end Brannon Green.

Ice age: Quarterback Landry Jones emerged from the post-practice locker room Monday with a huge ice-wrap covering his elbow and shoulder, eliciting at least a momentary buzz in the media corps assembled outside.

Not to worry, though. It's a regular thing, Jones said.

"Just precautionary stuff," he said. "Keeping my arm fresh."

Only Texas Tech's Seth Doege (581) and Arizona's Nick Foles (560) threw the ball more this season than Jones (537). On top of that, think about how many times a day in practice Jones whips his arm forward.

"You just have to watch it, be careful with it," Jones said. "You don't want to get your arm too tired where in the game you don't have any pop on your ball."

It's like a baseball pitcher icing down his arm after a start. It immediately relieves any swelling and helps speed the recovery process. Jones doesn't ice it every day, but he and quarterbacks coach Josh Heupel keep an eye on it.

"He wants to keep me fresh for the game," Jones said. "You can usually tell when your arm's getting sore, and he'll take you out of some of the throws that you have during the week."

Hawkeye dilemma: With stud tailback Marcus Coker suspended for the Insight Bowl, the Hawkeyes' next-most experienced ballcarrier this season has 18 rushing attempts. That makes it somewhat challenging for the OU defense to prepare for.

"They've got a stable of three or four guys that I'm sure they'll rotate, and they're going to do what they do," said defensive coordinator Brent Venables. "They run inside-outside lead plays and some split-flow plays and a little bit of power and they're going to play-action (pass) off of it."

At least it makes for interesting scout-team sessions.

"(Coker) runs with great strength and runs behind his pads. He brings a physical dimension that's hard to simulate," Venables said. "We've got a 165-pound, scrawny scout team running back trying to simulate him. Maybe this is a little bit closer to what we might see."

So who is that scrawny scout-team running back?

"Hold on here ..." Venables said, searching his mental Rolodex. "Julian Winters. He's a good player. A really good scat back."

Boston student re-united with $170,000 violin (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Christmas came early for a Boston music student who was reunited with the $170,000 violin she forgot in the overhead compartment of a regional commuter bus she rode last week, police said.

Muchen Hsieh, a student at the New England Conservatory in Boston, had traveled to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, arriving at roughly 11 p.m. on Tuesday.

Christine O'Brien, a spokeswoman for the Philadelphia police, who helped Hsieh track down the missing instrument, said then came a moment of sheer panic for the student.

O'Brien said Hsieh realized she had forgotten the instrument after she was picked up from the bus station. She blamed her absent-mindedness on travel fatigue.

Hsieh called the bus company, Megabus, roughly 30 minutes after she arrived but the bus had already left the Philadelphia station, O'Brien said. Hsieh also notified police, making a plea for the instrument's recovery, O'Brien said.

The 176-year-old instrument, on loan to Hsieh from a Taiwanese cultural foundation, was found by bus cleaners in the same compartment in which Hsieh left it. They put it in storage, and police returned it to Hsieh on Friday.

Hsieh joins the ranks of esteemed musicians who have mislaid or forgotten their valuable and sometimes priceless instruments. World renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma once left his in a cab.

One German string player required medical attention from the stress caused when he left his violin, worth roughly $1.4 million, on a commuter train in 2010.

It is not unusual for students at Hsieh's school to have such valuable instruments, Ellen Pfeifer, spokeswoman for the New England Conservatory, told the Boston Globe.

"Most of our string players, whether violinists, cellists, or violists, have pretty expensive, old, rare, instruments," Pfeifer said. "They frequently get them on loan from wealthy foundations."

The violin, which is in pristine condition, was made in 1835 by Vincenzo Jorio in Naples.

"This is certainly one of the most expensive items I have ever heard of and we were so relieved to get it back to the owner," said Megabus spokesman Bryony Chamberlain, adding that people often forget stowed-away items after long trips.

Hsieh had traveled from Boston to New York City and then to Philadelphia, Chamberlain said, a trip that could have taken more than six and a half hours.

"Each division has incidents of lost items that rare -- but this is probably one of the most unique," police spokeswoman O'Brien said, adding that Hsieh put on a mini-concert for the officers who organized the recovery.

"She is very talented," O'Brien said.

The Year in Busts

10. Seahawk Drilling: A mere minnow of a bankruptcy at $625 million, Seahawk lacked the size, diversification, and sound financial fundamentals it would have needed to survive the slowdown in coastal drilling touched off by the BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Its fleet of rigs was sold to Hercules Offshore to raise funds to pay off bondholders.

MF Global aside, this was a relatively quiet year for bankruptcies considering the poor economy. The good news for bankruptcy fans is that things picked up near the end of the year, as European sovereign debt woes made it more difficult for heavily indebted firms to roll over their obligations. Since nobody expects the European situation to be sorted out anytime soon, that means next year should feature an extended period of choppy waters for troubled firms and perhaps a spike in Chapter 11 filings.

2 Mayo Clinic workers die in Fla. helicopter crash

(AP) ? Two Mayo Clinic employees flying to the University of Florida to harvest organs were killed when their helicopter crashed Monday in north Florida, officials said.

The helicopter departed the Jacksonville hospital around 5:45 a.m. but never arrived in Gainesville, about 60 miles southwest, said Kathy Barbour, a spokeswoman for the Mayo Clinic.

The employees' names were not released because relatives hadn't been notified.

"Mayo is working internally to support the family and employees of those lost in this most unfortunate tragedy," Barbour said.

The helicopter crashed about 12 miles northeast of Palatka, said Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen.

Clay County Sheriff's Office dispatcher Myron White confirmed that three people died in the crash, but no additional information was immediately available from the crash site.

The National Transportation Safety Board also was investigating.

FAA records show the Bell 206 helicopter is owned by SK Jets. An employee who declined to give her name said the St. Augustine company had no immediate information.

The SK website lists the Bell 206 helicopter as part of its fleet and says the helicopter has the best safety record of any helicopter in the industry. Bell's website says the helicopter is used for emergency medical services, corporate transportation and firefighting, among other things.

The crash and others like it illustrate that just transporting the organs for transplants can be a delicate endeavor.

In 1990, a surgeon and an assistant flying to pick up a donor heart for a patient were killed in a plane crash in New Mexico. And in 2007, a twin-engine plane carrying a team of surgeons and technicians ? along with a set of lungs on ice being brought to a patient already prepped for surgery ? crashed into the choppy waters of Lake Michigan.

Doctors ultimately got another set of donor lungs that were transplanted into the patient.

Keeping Kids Warm, Dry and Safe in Cold Weather (HealthDay)

FRIDAY, Dec. 23 (HealthDay News) -- You winterize your house and car, and you need to do the same with your children, an expert suggests.

"Children are even more vulnerable than adults to cold-weather and winter-related injuries," Dr. Karen Judy, a pediatrician at Loyola University Health System and professor of pediatrics at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, said in a Loyola news release.

She offered tips to keep children comfortable and safe when they're outside in cold weather:

  • Dress kids in layers. If one layer gets wet, the child can remove it to keep moisture away from the skin.
  • Use fleece and wool garments instead of cotton clothes, which will not provide insulation if they get wet.
  • Warm boots and mittens are essential because extremities are most prone to frostbite. Make sure kids cover their ears and nose and wear a hat to prevent significant heat loss from the head.
  • Children should come inside often to limit their exposure to the cold, and they should change out of wet clothing immediately.

Children can also be at risk when traveling in the car during winter.

"We spend a lot of time in our cars in winter, and this can be dangerous if we are not prepared," Judy said.

"In cold weather, parents need to take additional precautions to keep kids safe while traveling even if it's just to the grocery store. Never leave kids in a car unattended and keep a winter survival kit in the car with blankets, extra socks and gloves, snacks, and a first-aid kit in case the car breaks down or you are stranded in your car," she advised.

Tax cut lives on: Congress gives its approval

(AP) ? After weeks of bickering and doubt, Congress delivered a last-minute holiday tax cut extension to 160 million workers Friday along with further unemployment benefits for millions laid off in the nation's fierce recession and weak economic recovery. It was a convincing victory for President Barack Obama, a humbling retreat for House Republicans.

Back-to-back voice vote approvals of the two-month special measure by the Senate and House came in mere seconds with no debate, just days after House Republican leaders had insisted that full-blown negotiations on a full-year bill were the only way to prevent an immediate tax increase on Jan. 1.

Most members of Congress were already gone for the holidays, leaving behind just a few legislators to take formal action. Obama was leaving in the afternoon for a delayed vacation in Hawaii.

The measure passed despite lingering grumbling from tea party Republicans. It buys time for talks early next year on how to finance the year-long extensions.

It will keep in place a 2 percentage point cut in the payroll tax ? a salary boost of about $20 a week for an average worker making $50,000 a year ? and prevent almost 2 million unemployed people from losing jobless benefits averaging $300 a week.

Senate and House Republican leaders did gain a major win last week, winning a provision that would require Obama to make a swift decision on whether to approve construction of the Canada-to-Texas Keystone XL oil pipeline. To stop construction, Obama, who had wanted to put the decision off until after the 2012 election, would have to declare that it was not in the nation's interest.

Passage of the tax bill in the House ended a holiday season Republican confrontation with Obama and Senate Democrats that had threatened to hit 160 million workers with a tax increase on Jan. 1. But it backfired badly. Even Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell and the Wall Street Journal editorial board urged Speaker John Boehner and other House Republicans to act quickly and keep the tax cut in effect.

On Friday, an expressionless Boehner read from a piece of paper before him, gaveled the House's last session of the year closed and stepped off the podium on the Democratic side. He hugged the dean of the House, Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich.

"I wished him a Merry Christmas," Dingell said afterward. "I think he's somewhat at ease to have this mess of his back."

A full-year extension of the tax cut had been embraced by virtually every lawmaker in both the House and Senate but had been derailed in a quarrel over demands by House Republicans. Senate leaders of both parties had tried to barter such an agreement among themselves a week ago but failed, instead agreeing upon a 60-day measure to buy time for talks next year.

Thursday's decision by Boehner, R-Ohio, to cave in to the Senate came after days of criticism from Obama and Democrats. But perhaps more tellingly, GOP stalwarts including Republican senators and outside strategists warned that if the tax cuts were allowed to expire, Republicans would take a political beating that would harm efforts to unseat Obama next year.

House GOP arguments about the legislative process and what the "uncertainty" of a two-month extension would mean for businesses were unpersuasive, and Obama took the offensive.

Friday's House and Senate sessions were remarkable. Both chambers had essentially recessed for the holidays but leaders in both parties orchestrated passage of the short-term agreement under debate rules that would allow any individual member of Congress to derail the pact, at least for a time. None did.

The developments were a clear win for Obama. The payroll tax cut was the centerpiece of his three-month, campaign-style drive for jobs legislation that seems to have contributed to an uptick in his poll numbers ? and taken a toll on those of congressional Republicans.

Obama, Republicans and congressional Democrats all said they preferred a one-year extension but the politics of achieving the goal, particularly the spending cuts and new fees required to pay for it, eluded them. All pledged to start working on that in January.

"There remain important differences between the parties on how to implement these policies, and it is critical that we protect middle-class families from a tax increase while we work them out," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said.

House GOP arguments about the legislative process and what the "uncertainty" of a two-month extension would mean for businesses were unpersuasive. The two-month version's $33 billion cost will be covered by a .1 percentage point increase on guarantee fees on new home loans backed by mortgage giants Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Ginnie Mae ? at a likely cost of about $17 a month for a person with a $200,000 mortgage.

"Has this place become so dysfunctional that even when we agree to things, we can't do it?" Obama said on Thursday. "Enough is enough."

The top Senate Republican, McConnell of Kentucky, was a driving force behind the final agreement, imploring Boehner to accept the deal that McConnell and Reid had struck last week and passed with overwhelming support in both parties.

Meanwhile, tea party-backed House Republicans began to abandon their leadership.

"I don't think that my constituents should have a tax increase because of Washington's dysfunction," freshman Rep. Sean Duffy, R-Wis., said.

If the cuts had expired as scheduled, 160 million workers would have seen tax increases and up to 2 million people without jobs for six months would start losing unemployment benefits averaging $300 a week. Doctors would have seen a 27 percent cut in their Medicare payments, the product of a 1997 cut that Congress has been unable to fix.

Even though GOP leaders like House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., promised that the two sides could quickly iron out their differences, the truth is that it'll take intense talks to figure out both the spending cuts and fee increases required to finance the measure.

Just hours before he announced the breakthrough, Boehner had made the case for a yearlong extension. But on a brief late afternoon conference call, he informed his colleagues it was time to yield.

"He said that as your leader, you've in effect asked me to make decisions easy and difficult, and I'm making my decision right now," said Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., paraphrasing Boehner's comments.

Kingston said the conference call lasted just minutes and Boehner did not give anyone time to respond.

There was still carping among tea party freshmen upset that GOP leaders had yielded.

"Even though there is plenty of evidence this is a bad deal for America ... the House has caved yet again to the president and Senate Democrats," Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan., said. "We were sent here with a clear set of instructions from the American people to put an end to business as usual in Washington, yet here we are being asked to sign off on yet another gimmick."

Fewer Yale Grads Are Going into Finance - Business - The Atlantic ...

To figure out how the financial crisis college graduates' career choices, Catherine Rampell of?The New York Times' Economix blog?decided to look at?how many young grads are vying to getting into 1 percent through Wall Street.?Sure, she picked that cliched sampling of elite school -- Harvard, Yale, and Princeton -- but the data they provided to her show that indeed anger at Wall Street might have penetrated ivied gates. In 2010, a lower proportion of the three's graduating classes went into finance than before the recession. The trend can be seen the best with Yale, whose newly-minted alumni's industries are charted below. There only 14 percent of the class of 2010 went into finance, down from its pre-Great Recession peak of 31 percent in 2000. The story's similar with Princeton and Harvard: their portions of young finance workers fell from 46 percent to 36 percent and from 25 percent to 20 percent, respectively, between 2006 and 2010. It could be the case that the Ivy Leaguers are saying fooey to an effed-up financial system -- or that that financial isn't hiring them at the rates that they used to. And we'll have to wait another year or two to see what effect?Occupy Ivy Leaguers had, too. Rampell has the charts for Harvard and Yale over at Economix.

Activists say 111 killed in Syria's "bloodiest day" (Reuters)

BEIRUT (Reuters) ? Syrian forces killed 111 people ahead of the start of a mission to monitor President Bashar al-Assad's implementation of an Arab League peace plan, activists said on Wednesday, and France branded the killings an "unprecedented massacre."

Rami Abdulrahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 111 civilians and activists were killed on Tuesday when Assad's forces surrounded them in the foothills of the northern Jabal al-Zawiyah region in Idlib province and unleashed two hours of bombardment and heavy gunfire.

Another 100 army deserters were either wounded or killed, making it the "bloodiest day of the Syrian revolution," he said.

"There was a massacre of unprecedented scale in Syria on Tuesday," said French foreign ministry spokesman Bernard Valero. "It is urgent that the U.N. Security Council issues a firm resolution that calls for an end to the repression."

The United States said it was deeply disturbed by reports of indiscriminate killing and warned Assad the violence must stop. Britain said it was shocked by the reports and urged Syria to "end immediately its brutal violence against civilians."

Events in Syria are hard to verify because authorities, who say they are battling terrorists who have killed more than 1,100 soldiers and police, have banned most independent reporting.

Tuesday's bloodshed brought the death toll reported by activists in the last 48 hours to over 200.

The main opposition Syrian National Council said "gruesome murders" were carried out, including the beheading of a local imam, and demanded international action to protect civilians.

The escalating death toll in nine months of popular unrest has raised the specter of civil war in Syria with Assad, 46, still trying to stamp out protests with troops and tanks despite international sanctions imposed to push him onto a reform path.

Idlib, a northwestern province bordering Turkey, has been a hotbed of protest during the revolt, inspired by uprisings across the Arab world this year, and has also seen increasing attacks by armed insurgents against his forces.

The Observatory said rebels had damaged or destroyed 17 military vehicles in Idlib since Sunday while in the southern province of Deraa violence continued on Wednesday.

Tanks entered the town of Dael, the British-based group said, leading to clashes in which 15 security force members were killed. Six army defectors and a civilian also died and dozens of civilians were wounded, it said.

ARAB PEACE MONITORS

The Syrian National Council said 250 people had been killed on Monday and Tuesday in "bloody massacres," and that the Arab League and United Nations must protect civilians.

It demanded "an emergency U.N. Security Council session to discuss the (Assad) regime's massacres in Jabal al-Zawiyah, Idlib and Homs, in particular" and called for "safe zones" to be set up under international protection.

It also said those regions should be declared disaster areas and urged the International Red Crescent and other relief organizations to provide humanitarian aid.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said unless Damascus complied fully with the Arab League plan to end the violence, "additional steps" would be taken against it. Washington and the European Union have already imposed sanctions on Syria.

"Bashar al-Assad should have no doubt that the world is watching, and neither the international community no the Syria people accept his legitimacy," he said.

Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby said on Tuesday that an advance observer team would go to Syria on Thursday to prepare the way for 150 monitors due to arrive by end-December.

Syria stalled for weeks before signing a protocol on Monday to admit the monitors, who will check its compliance with the plan mandating an end to violence, withdrawal of troops from the streets, release of prisoners and dialogue with the opposition.

Syrian officials say over 1,000 prisoners have been freed since the plan was agreed six weeks ago and that the army has pulled out of cities. The government promised a parliamentary election early next year as well as constitutional reform which might loosen the ruling Baath Party's grip on power.

Syrian pro-democracy activists are deeply skeptical about Assad's commitment to the plan, which, if implemented, could embolden demonstrators demanding an end to his 11-year rule, which followed three decades of domination by his father.

Assad is from Syria's minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, and Alawites hold many senior posts in the army which he has deployed to crush the mainly Sunni Muslim protests.

In recent months, peaceful protests have increasingly given way to armed confrontations, often led by army deserters.

In a show of military power, state television broadcast footage of live-fire exercises held by the navy and air force, which it said aimed at deterring any attack on Syria.

U.N. TOLL

The United Nations has said more than 5,000 people have been killed in Syria since anti-Assad protests broke out in March.

Arab, U.S. and European sanctions combined with the unrest have sent the economy into sharp decline. The Syrian pound fell nearly 2 percent on Tuesday to more than 55 pounds per dollar, 17 percent down from the official rate before the unrest.

Arab rulers are keen to prevent a descent into civil war in Syria that could affect a region already riven by rivalry between non-Arab Shi'ite Muslim power Iran and Sunni Muslim Arab heavyweights such as Saudi Arabia.

Compensation Force: HR/Finance Showdown Coming for Rewards?

Tug_of_warIn its newly released report Forging an HR/Finance Partnership to Shape Rewards for the Future, Towers Watson notes tension between the functions regarding reward strategy going forward.? The research findings suggest that the balance of power may shift more toward Finance in the future, not only in the area of reward budgeting but also in the reward strategy realm.

The Towers Watson research offers interesting data worth some thought and reflection on the part of HR and reward professionals.? A few pieces that jumped out at me are noted below; plus I took the liberty of throwing one set of findings up against some recent informal research conducted by the HR Bartender, Sharlyn Lauby.

Most Important Element in the Reward Package?

Finance says compensation (pay plus bonus) is number one, with 62% rating this element as "absolutely critical/very important".? HR sees training and development as most important (51% rating it as such), although compensation did come in second place?among this group.

I thought it interesting to juxtapose the HR Bartender research against these particular findings.? The former tells us that training and development is what HR people want most to do (by an enormous margin) and compensation is their least favorite thing to spend time on.? Coincidence? I have to wonder.

Who Owns Rewards Going into the Future?

Both parties acknowledge that reward strategy today belongs largely with HR, but they differ in their predictions of the future.? While HR believes it will continue to drive reward strategy with minimal involvement from Finance, Finance believes it will play a larger role going forward (63% of Finance respondents see their reward strategy role in the future being equal to or great than that of HR).

Why would Finance want to horn in on our turf here?? One reason noted by the Towers Watson analysts is the upcoming challenges associated with employers' responses to the requirements of healthcare reform law - and?it certainly makes sense to me that we'd want both sets of players at the table to deal with this.? The research suggests, however,?that?there may be a few other reasons as well.

Rewards in the Future Must be Flexible.? Or Not.

Perhaps one reason for Finance's interest/intent to play a larger role in reward strategy is the group's collective opinion that rewards must be made more flexible in the future -- in response to business priorities, workforce composition, the economic environment, etc.? Over half (56%) of Finance respondents noted the expectation that reward philosophy will/must change in a manner that increases flexibility, where only 37% of HR respondents agreed with this imperative.? In fact, over one in five (21%) of HR respondents believe reward flexibility will/must be reduced.?

Overrewarded or Underrewarded?

A reasonably large segment of Finance respondents believe there may now be overinvestment in rewards - including in compensation, training and development, career and healthcare benefits, and flexible work arrangements.? HR respondents disagree, sometimes quite significantly.? Why the disconnect?? Does HR have its fingers more firmly on the pulse of competitive practice than Finance -- or is HR too immersed in benchmarking and overlooking opportunities to better align reward structure and spending with business needs and priorities?

Towers Watson analysts are touting this research in a positive light, as evidence of our progress toward greater HR/Finance collaboration.? I find myself more in alignment with John Hollon, TLNT's Vice President for Editorial, who covers the research here and suggests that the HR/Finance tension captured in the research is signaling potential problems that deserve our care and attention.

What's your take?

Poll: Is it Election Day yet? (Politico)

A whopping seven in 10 Americans can?t wait for the presidential campaign to be over, according to a new poll Friday.

The Iowa caucuses aren?t for 17 days, but 70 percent of Americans say they already wish campaign season was done, a USA Today/Gallup poll released Friday shows. Slightly over one-fourth of Americans, or 26 percent, disagree with the majority of those polled and say they can?t wait for the presidential campaign to begin.

And campaign fatigue is even greater in 12 swing states key to the election ? 75 percent of residents in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin want it to be over. Only 21 percent of those living in these swing states say they are looking forward to the presidential election season with anticipation, the poll found.

As for Republicans and Democrats, there?s finally some bipartisan agreement on an issue: 67 percent of Democrats and 66 percent of Republicans can?t wait for the 2012 presidential campaign to be over. Just 31 percent of Republicans are looking forward to its kickoff, and only 27 percent of Democrats say they feel the same.

The poll surveyed 1,034 adults from Dec. 6-7. The margin of error is plus or minus three percentage points.

Timeline: A Look Back at the Iraq War (ContributorNetwork)

December 15, 2011, will remain forever as a great day in history for the United States, as it is the day that the war in Iraq officially ended, according to The Envoy. Today, at the Baghdad International Airport, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and General Lloyd Austin, the top United States Commander serving in Iraq, presided over the ceremonies that marked the ending of the war. The United States and many other countries who have been involved in this fight have sacrificed a lot since its beginning in 2003. Here is some more information about those sacrifices and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

* After the 9/11 attacks, Iraq was firmly on President George W. Bush's radar as a country that not only was becoming more dangerous with their supposed weapons of mass destruction but with their alleged ties to terrorist groups like Al-Qaida who were responsible for the 9/11 attacks, according to History.com.

* On November 8, 2002, UN Security Council Resolution 1441 stated that Iraq readmit weapons inspectors and comply.

* Even though it seemed as Iraq did comply with the UN Security Resolutions, the U.S. gave an ultimatum to Saddam Hussein telling him to leave Iraq within forty eight hours or the U.S. would be invading.

* On March 20, 2003, after Hussein refused to leave, the U.S. and British troops launched an airstrike and an attack by land from Kuwait on the country.

* Baghdad was won over by the U.S. led forces on April 9, 2003, according to CBS News.

* On May 1, 2003, President George W. Bush, aboard a USS Abraham Lincoln declares combat operations in Iraq over, according to BBC News.

* The U.S. led the occupation of the country with minimal losses until sectarian violence grew throughout Iraq.

* While the U.S. seemed to be winning the war, one of the things that they were missing from their victory was capturing Saddam Hussein. But on December 13, 2003, Saddam was captured in Tikrit, Iraq in a farmhouse, according to The Washington Post.

* Saddam is tried by an Iraqi court and found guilty of crimes against humanity specifically for the 1982 killings of 148 people, and is sentenced to death by hanging. He is executed in December 2006, according to MSNBC.

* Even though Hussein has been captured, tried, and executed, the Iraq War is increasingly bloody; with the number of U.S. troops killed reaching 3,000 in December 2006.

* A surge of 20,000 additional U.S. troops is announced in January 2007.

* The fighting continues, but the U.S. and Iraq ratify an agreement on December 8, 2008 that says that the U.S. will leave the country by the end of 2011.

* The war is officially declared over on December 15, 2011.

* 4,483 Americans were killed during the war in Iraq, according to antiwar.com.

* 100,000 Iraqi civilians are estimated to have been killed during the war, according to About.com.

* The total cost of Operation Iraqi Freedom is estimated to be around $806 billion, according to The Congressional Research Service.

Pastmapper looks to take Google Maps back in time

There's not exactly a ton to see there just yet, but a new website called Pastmapper has some pretty ambitious plans, and it's off to a fairly decent start. With a little help from the Google Maps API, it's aiming to provide maps of cities as they were in the past, complete with local business information, accurate streets, and even changes to things like hills and coastline. To kick things off, site founder Brad Thompson has debuted version 0.1 of the site with map of San Francisco as it was in 1853, including information from the A.W. Morgan & Company's San Francisco City Directory. Take a gander for yourself at the source link below -- and, if you're interested, Thompson is currently looking for some help to expand it.

Hack a TV Remote to Control Your Computer's Audio [DIY]

Hack a TV Remote to Control Your Computer's AudioIf you use your computer for playing music, chances are at least once you've wished you had a remote control for it. Hacker Owen Trueblood wanted the same thing, so he hacked a TV remote to work with an infrared sensor attached to his computer.

Using an old TV remote, an ATtiny13 microcontroller, and an infrared receiver pulled out of an old VCR, he was able to set up the remote to control the computer's volume by hacking the IR sensor into a USB. Seeing as how most computers don't come with a remote, this is handy if you're using a computer specifically for music playing all day long. You can find the full guide, including the source code for the control app on the computer over on Hackniac.

Gingrich: Voters looking past his personal history

(AP) ? Newt Gingrich says he's surged ahead of his rivals for the Republican presidential nomination because voters are looking beyond his checkered personal history for a candidate with a record of big accomplishments.

Gingrich says that as House speaker he balanced the federal budget and overhauled welfare ? which he says outweigh his confessions of marital infidelity and multiple marriages. Gingrich says he's open to people getting to know him and plans to run a positive, issue-oriented campaign in the 19 days before the Iowa caucuses on Jan. 3.

Gingrich says that kind of campaign has real appeal at a time when many people think the country is in deep trouble.

Gingrich spoke Thursday during a taping of Iowa Public Television's "Iowa Press" program, airing over the weekend.

Banks Face Crisis Of Confidence, As Europe Falls Further

The crisis in Europe showed no sign of letting up on Wednesday, and analysts and observers warned of the potential for a sharp financial downturn overseas. Hours after the markets closed in Europe, the credit ratings agency Fitch Ratings downgraded five major European banks and banking groups: Credit Agricole in France, Rabobank Group in the Netherlands, Danske Bank in Denmark, OP Pohjola Group in Finland, and Banque Federative du Credit Mutuel in France.

While U.S. banks were unscathed, they now face a possible crisis of confidence. Many dumped risky European debt and other assets earlier this year, but banks in the U.S. are still at risk in the face of a recession and credit crunch in Europe. In a report last month, Fitch called the outlook for U.S. banks "stable" at the end of the third quarter, but warned that the spread of debt problems in Europe would have "sizable" effect because of the connectivity of global banking firms.

Earlier on Wednesday the euro plunged to below $1.30, an 11-month low; Italian government bond yields traded above 7 percent, the level widely considered unsustainable, and stock markets in the United States and Europe fell. The FTSE Eurofirst 300 fell 2.25 percent, the CAC 40 in France plunged 3.33 percent, the DAX fell 1.72 percent and the S&P 500 fell 1.13 percent.

"Europe is on the cusp of a recession: one that will be mild at best," said Michael Gregory, senior economist at BMO Capital Markets.

For more than a year, U.S. banks have been reducing their direct exposure to Europe, particularly its most stressed countries -- net exposure to bad debt in Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece and Spain by the six largest U.S. banks represented only 0.5 percent of total assets at the six largest U.S. banks, according to the Fitch report. However, banks have substantially more assets tied to France, Germany and the United Kingdom, according to this report.

Banks do hedge their bets on Europe, buying insurance essentially against falling assets. Goldman Sachs reported in an earnings call in September that its exposure to Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece and Spain was net $2.5 billion after hedges, for example. However, whether or not those hedges will actually work in the event of a government default is an open question. Voluntary debt forgiveness, which has already happened in Greece, is not covered under these hedges, notes the Fitch report.

No matter the direct amount of assets U.S. banks have in Europe, the risks of a 2008-style credit crunch loom in such an interconnected economy.

"If we were to get a series of failures in Europe, [it would be] hard to avoid a seizing up of markets as everyone pulls back and avoids risk," said Martin Baily, an economist at Brookings Institution and former chairman of the council of economic advisers under President Bill Clinton.
