Natural therapies: Cardiologists examine alternatives to halt high blood pressure

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2011) ? More and more, patients show up to appointments with hypertension expert John Bisognano, M.D., Ph.D. carrying bags full of "natural" products that they hope will help lower their blood pressure. And like most physicians, Bisognano doesn't always know if these products will do any good, or if they will cause any harm.

"Right now we're seeing a cultural shift where an increasing number of people want to avoid standard pharmaceuticals," said Bisognano, professor of Medicine and director of Outpatient Cardiology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. "We're also seeing a growing number of patients who require a large number of drugs to control their blood pressure and are looking for something else to help manage it."

In an effort to better educate health care professionals and patients, Bisognano and Kevin Woolf, M.D., a cardiology fellow at the Medical Center, conducted the most comprehensive review to date of the evidence behind a wide range of non-drug interventions for the treatment of high blood pressure. The review is featured in the September issue of the Journal of Clinical Hypertension.

Woolf said there is not enough data to recommend any of these alternative options on a routine basis, but on an individual basis he thinks they are useful. "Patients have different backgrounds and different approaches to living their lives," said Woolf. "This is where the art of medicine comes in; getting to know patients and what they will and will not embrace can help physicians identify different therapies that suit their patients' habits and that will hopefully make a difference for them."

Woolf and Bisognano, who is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Hypertension, emphasize that all patients with hypertension should adhere to the low-salt DASH diet, which is high in fiber, low in fats and incorporates lots of fruits and vegetables, and follow an exercise and weight loss regimen -- lifestyle modifications recommended by the American Heart Association. Any alternative options should be considered for use in addition to these lifestyle changes.

When it comes to safety, Bisognano adds, "These alternative options are usually harmless, except when they keep patients from taking medications they need to take. If a patient is taking a supplement instead of something that we know is useful, that could be a problem."

Dietary Supplements

The shining star among supplements is coenzyme Q10, an enzyme involved in energy production that also acts as an antioxidant. Patients with hypertension tend to have lower levels of the enzyme, and a meta-analysis -- an overarching analysis of past studies -- found that treatment with coenzyme Q10 supplements significantly reduced blood pressure.

Woolf noted that "Coenzyme Q10 has a pretty profound effect on blood pressure, but whenever research is based on a collection of other data you have to have some skepticism." Woolf said he still thinks the compound is promising.

Woolf also found that potassium helps lower blood pressure, and there is evidence that increasing the amount of potassium we get through the foods we eat could carry some of the same mild benefits as taking supplements.

Herbal Remedies

The potential herbal remedies Woolf identified include mistletoe extract, used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat hypertension. Mistletoe extract reduced blood pressure in animal studies, but Woolf cautions that it may be toxic at high doses. The extract from Hawthorn, a type of tree, is also used, but provides only a slight reduction in blood pressure. Conversely, Woolf uncovered a handful of herbal remedies -- St. John's wort, ephedra/ma huang, yohimbine and licorice -- that may increase blood pressure.

Woolf and Bisognano stress that the Food and Drug Administration does not regulate dietary and herbal supplements the way they regulate traditional pharmaceuticals. They say health care providers and patients need to be aware that the safety of these products is not always rigorously established and that formulations can vary.

Acupuncture/Meditation

Research on both practices is mixed -- the types of patients included, the methods used, and the results, which vary from study to study. While there is no conclusive evidence that either lowers blood pressure, researchers found that acupuncture reduces blood pressure compared to placebo in patients also taking anti-hypertensive medications, while in a meta-analysis, transcendental meditation appeared to lower blood pressure. Other techniques that may provide some benefit include Zen Buddhist meditation and Qi Gong.

Devices

Some devices developed in recent years involve a medical procedure, while others use technology that requires patients to participate in various exercises.

Those that involve a procedure include the implantable Rheos^? device, which regulates blood pressure much like a pacemaker regulates heart rhythm, and the Symplicity^? catheter system, which ablates or destroys nerves around the kidneys that send inappropriate signals to the brain to increase blood pressure. Both are designed for patients with difficult-to-treat hypertension and led to significant drops in blood pressure in clinical trials. They are only available to research participants at this time.

Two devices that patients can use in the comfort of their own homes are the RESPeRATE breathing device and the Zona Plus hand drip device. The RESPeRATE system uses a breath sensor and gives patients feedback through headphones to help them slow their breathing, which research suggests benefits blood pressure. If used 15 minutes a day, studies show RESPeRATE leads to a modest decrease in hypertension.

The Zona Plus is a device that patients grip in either hand and perform multiple sets of squeezing at different levels in response to electronic cues. Bisognano says there is no good explanation as to why this works, but studies found the device decreased hypertension in patients using it three days a week for at least eight weeks. Patients can buy both devices for between $300 and $400, and Bisognano suggests them to interested patients.

Indian investors eye Ethiopian agriculture

Addis Ababa, Aug 29

A group of Indian investors are visiting Ethiopia with interest in the east Afrian nation's rapidly growing farm sector.

The delegation of over 30 Indian investors, led by Ramakrishna Karuturi, founder and managing director of Karuturi Global limited company, visited Addis Ababa this past week to expand India's foothold in the agricultural sector.

Subhash Chandra, second secretary of the Indian embassy in Ethiopia, said India is a leading nation in innovation.

"Indian technology is appropriate, affordable and valuable and this can help Ethiopia accelerate its development. Indian investment in Ethiopia currently stands at $4.5 billion and is dominated mostly by floriculture and agriculture," Chandra told IANS.

Ethiopia's exports to India are mainly agricultural exports with the bulk of them consisting of pulses and gum. The most lucrative of Ethiopia's exported produce is coffee. India's biggest exports to Ethiopia come from the fields of construction, education and electronics.

The two countries relationship however has diversified to other sectors, as Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh noted in May during the India-Africa summit held in Addis Ababa.

Manmohan Singh announced India would support the development of a new Ethio-Djibouti Railway line by offering $300 million. India also provided loans for sugar projects in the country through the Export-import bank of India which opened its offices in Addis Ababa last year.

Sheila Sudhakaran, assistant secretary general of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), said the visiting delegation came from a diverse area and includes not only machinery, agriculture, and health, but all issues related to farming.

"FICCI is working in many sectors in Africa but mostly in farming. Our fist summit was held in New Delhi in 2008, and then we had another one in Mumbai in 2010. We also organised a workshop on contract farming in India in 2010 as well. Our relationship with Ethiopia is primarily related to agricultural development," she said.

Eyesuswork Zafu, president of the Ethiopian Chamber and Sectoral Associations, said: "If it wasn't for the period when Ethiopia was under the communist military junta regime and when India had its period of introspection, business ties between the two countries would have been much larger than it is today."

He added that the chambers of commerce of the two countries have already signed agreements to "enthusiastically renew their commitment".

Irene cuts power to 1.8 million (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Hurricane Irene knocked out power to 1.8 million homes and businesses, disrupted oil refineries and forced nuclear plants to reduce power as it barreled toward New York City.

As the Southeast made small progress toward restoring power as Irene spun northward, blackouts in Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey jumped.

Only 19,000 customers faced outages in New York City, but Consolidated Edison warned that downtown Manhattan, including Wall Street, could face further blackouts as low lying areas flooded.

Local forecasters said the path of Irene was shifting westward, raising the prospect of 10-foot storm surges.

Several East Coast refineries were forced to cut back on runs, while ConocoPhillips shut its Bayway plant in New Jersey. Other refiners in Pennsylvania and New Jersey throttled back on throughput or prepared for the full impact of the storm.

The U.S. Coast Guard closed the Port of Philadelphia, an oil hub, and restricted some vessel traffic at the larger hub of New York Harbor, which stayed open.

Power generator Exelon idled the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant in Ocean County, New Jersey, as a precaution. The plant supplies up to 600,000 homes.

The shutdown is expected to be short and other power supply may be available in the region, a company spokesman said.

"It's really as a precaution, a conservative action because we do expect hurricane force winds," said Exelon spokesman Marshall Murphy on Saturday.

Irene earlier cut power to large swaths of Virginia and North Carolina as it came ashore, prompting Brunswick nuclear power plant in Southport, North Carolina to reduce power generation.

Court says Marine should go to trial in Iraq case (AP)

SAN DIEGO ? A military court has rejected an argument by defense lawyers to dismiss a major Iraq war crimes case involving a Marine whose squad killed 24 Iraqis in Haditha in 2005.

The court said in an opinion Thursday that it disagrees with the defense that the Marine Corps unfairly allowed the prosecution's team of military lawyers to remain on active duty, but denied the same request for the defense of Staff Sgt. Frank Wuterich.

The court said retired Marine Lt. Col. Colby Vokey's relationship with Wuterich as his lead military counsel wasn't interrupted substantially by his retirement in 2008 because he continued to represent him as a private lawyer until 2010.

Defense lawyers could not be reached for comment.

The U.S. Postal Service offering features a classic scene from Wilder's Oscar-winning 1959 film "Some Like It Hot" with Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis.

Tuesday's announcement rounds out the "Great Film Directors" commemorative set. The Postal Service said John Ford, Frank Capra and John Huston also are depicted in the series.

Since the tubes are near the skin?s surface during after giving birth, a laparoscope is no longer needed to reach them. If your baby is delivered using the C-section, the doctor can reach and tie your tubes through the same opening used in the delivery.

Who can use it?

Technically, every woman can opt for permanent birth control since it has no side effects like hormonal forms of contraception. However, permanent birth control is often advised only to women who:

* have all the children they want
* have serious health problems that can make pregnancies unsafe
* are old and at risk of serious pregnancy complications
* have decided that they do not want to have a child

What can be expected after the procedure?

Tubal occlusion procedures usually take about 30 to 45 minutes. Overnight confinement is not necessary and women can go home after a few hours? rest. After the procedure, you can expect to feel sore for a few days especially in your lower abdomen. You may need to relax and rest for a week and avoid lifting heavy objects. You can resume having sex a week after the procedure.

Aside from hormonal forms of contraception, women can also opt for permanent birth control. Tubal occlusion is the primary form of permanent contraception for women. Liverpool gained a point in a 2-2 draw with Everton in the Merseyside derby but they are still in a relegation fight as they are still only 4 points ahead of the drop zone in 13th place. Liverpool now take their dreadful away form to Wolves who have a reasonable home record with wins against Chelsea (last home game), Sunderland, Stoke, Birmingham & Manchester City. They have also drawn with West Ham & Newcastle. The defeats have come against Aston Villa, Bolton & Wigan. It is Wolves home record that is giving them a chance of staying up as they have only won one game away so far this season & that was against Liverpool over the Holiday period. Wolves unlike Liverpool are still in the FA Cup after they beat Championship side Doncaster Rovers 5-0 in their FA Cup replay on Tuesday Night.

So can Liverpool improve on their away record of only one away win at Bolton & two draws at Wigan & Birmingham. The long list of defeats which at present stands at 8 has seen them lose at Stoke, Everton, Manchester City, Manchester United, Blackburn, Blackpool, Spurs & Newcastle. Liverpool need to start winning under Dalglish & fast. They lost their last away league game 2-1 at Blackpool. They are also out of the FA Cup having lost 1-0 at Old Trafford against Manchester United & their league cup interest was ended by 4th Division Northampton Town at Anfield on penalties.

I think that this will be a close game & that both sides will cancel each other out. I think that if this fixture had taken place when Roy Hodgson was Liverpool manager then I would be predicting a Home win.

Match 2: Arsenal ? Wigan: (Saturday January 22nd: 3pm):

Arsenal are on a three game run that could shape the future of their season. On Wednesday they Played Leeds United away in the FA Cup and won 3-1. They now face Huddersfield at home in the 4th round. On Saturday they play Wigan in the Premiership & next week they play Championship side Ipswich in an attempt to claw back a 1-0 defeat from the first semi final leg. They should win against Wigan & Ipswich.

Arsenal?s home form has improved since they lost to Spurs. They have beaten Chelsea & Fulham as well as drawing with Manchester City. Arsenal have somehow lost three times this season at home to West Brom, Newcastle & already mentioned Spurs. On the plus side they have managed to beat Fulham, Birmingham, Blackpool, West Ham, Bolton & Chelsea. Bizarrely Arsenal?s away record is better than their home form because they have only lost twice away at Manchester United & Chelsea.

Arsenal have already beaten Wigan at home this season in the League cup quarter finals when they won 2-0. They also played Wigan away over Xmas when they drew 2-2 conceding a late goal which at the time frustrated them especially when you consider Wigan?s league placing. Wigan have managed to win at Wolves & Spurs as well as draws at Birmingham, Everton & Bolton last time out away.

Can?t see Wigan making it win no three on the road & so another three points to Arsenal in their title challenge.

Match 3: Blackpool ? Sunderland: (Saturday January 22nd: 3pm):

Blackpool lost at West Brom on Saturday but they are still in 10th place in the table on 28 points which is a wonderful return for them after 21 games. Blackpool now face Sunderland who have managed two away wins so far this season at Chelsea & last time out at Aston Villa.

Sunderland lost to Notts County in the FA cup a few weeks ago & have also just lost their top striker Darren Bent to Aston Villa which has not gone down well with Sunderland as they didn?t want to see him leave. Sunderland did draw their last game thanks to a 94th minute goal against their deadly rivals Newcastle when they drew 1-1 last Sunday. It will be interesting to see how they react in this game against Blackpool who as everybody knows are having a great season. Sunderland apart from the two away wins they have managed have also drawn at Spurs, Blackburn, Wigan, Fulham & Liverpool but have lost at Manchester United, West Brom, Wolves, Newcastle & Wigan.

Blackpool have a good home record with wins against West Brom, Wolves & Liverpool while they have drawn with Fulham & Everton. The defeats have come against Blackburn, Manchester City & Birmingham. They have in fact won more games away than at home. I think that Blackpool will catch Sunderland feeling sorry for them selves & hence win.

Amazingly West ham?s manager is still in a job despite the press reporting that he would be leaving. Could it be that the media have got it wrong? Never they are always correct. West Ham lost at home to Arsenal as I predicted last Saturday which leaves them still bottom & adrift by two points which is not that much. There is still hope I suspect but I think they won?t survive.

West Ham are still in the FA Cup after beating Barnsley & of course play the second leg of their League cup semi final next week when they play Birmingham City with a 2-1 lead from the first leg. It is their league form that is causing concern. They have only won once away at Fulham & drawn at Stoke, Blackburn, Wolves & Birmingham. The list of defeats have been at Liverpool, Sunderland, Newcastle, Arsenal & Aston Villa. Not good.

Everton?s home form improved with the win over Spurs in their last home game which was only their third of the season after wins against Stoke & Liverpool. They have dropped points in draws against Bolton, Wigan, Manchester United, Wolves & defeats to West Brom, Newcastle & Arsenal.

I think that Everton are in better form than West Ham & are also still in the Cup after beating Scunthorpe away 4-1. A home win then for Everton & a second successive home win for them.

Match 5: Fulham ? Stoke: (Saturday January 22nd: 3pm):

Fulham are in good form & have moved out of the relegation zone & upto 15th place. Fulham won their last home game when they thrashed West Brom 4-0 & followed that up with a 6-2 thrashing of Peterborough in the FA Cup & then drawing away at Wigan last Saturday 1-1.

Fulham won the previous fixture between these two sides over Christmas when they won 2-0 for their first & so far only away win this season. This should be a difficult game as Stoke are no pushovers as their 8th place in the table would suggest. Stoke have already won away at Newcastle, Blackburn & West Brom & drawn at Wigan. The defeats have come at Manchester United, Wolves, Bolton, Everton, & Chelsea. A mixed bag then.

Fulham have won only 4 games this season & three of them have been at home against West Brom, Wolves & Wigan. They have however, drawn 11 games this season which explains why they are so low in the table compared to the last few. The drawn games at home have been against Birmingham, Everton, Aston Villa, Manchester United & Sunderland. Fulham have lost against Manchester City, Spurs & West Ham. I think that Fulham?s recent return to form will just carry them over the line in this game as well as the fact that Stoke do appear venerable away.

The list of teams to fail is Arsenal, Liverpool, Blackburn, Wigan, Stoke, Wolves, Sunderland, Spurs & Newcastle. If there is a reason why United are top of the table then this is it.

United now face Birmingham at home after they saw their lead reduced to goal difference after they drew 0-0 at Spurs & both Manchester City & Arsenal won. It should be United?s home record that should see them crowned as Champions come the end of the season. We will see.

Birmingham have only won one game away this season & that was last time out away against Blackpool when they won 2-1. They also won 4-1 at Championship side Millwall 4-1 which was a good result so they are not entirely clueless away. To back this up they have managed to draw at Manchester City, Sunderland, Bolton, Fulham & Aston Villa. Some of those draws were difficult places to come away with a point. The defeats have come at West Brom, Wolves, Arsenal & Stoke.

Just because United have such a good home record I think they will win.

However, since the appointment of Alan Pardew their form has improved in the league. They thrashed West Ham in their last home game & last Sunday drew at Sunderland & were in fact very unlucky not to win as they only conceded to Sunderland in the 94th minute in a 1-1 draw. Newcastle have in fact only lost twice since Pardew was appointed & one of those defeats was against Spurs when they lost 1-0 away. The other defeat was a 3-1 home defeat against Manchester City.

Newcastle?s home record has seen them beat Aston Villa, Liverpool, Sunderland & of course West Ham last time out at home. They have also drawn with Fulham, Chelsea & Wigan but have lost to Blackburn, Stoke & Manchester City.

City have won already at West Ham, Newcastle, Wigan, Fulham & West Brom & drawn at Arsenal, Spurs & Stoke. Their only defeats have come at Sunderland & Wolves.

So a good away record against a villa side who have lost their last two home games against Sunderland & Spurs. Thankfully the draws against Chelsea & Birmingham have kept them out of the bottom three but only just as they are 17th above the drop zone on goal difference. Their home record reads three defeats, Arsenal being the other defeat they have suffered at home. They have managed to beat West Ham, West Brom, Blackpool & Everton & drawn with Bolton, Birmingham, Manchester United & Chelsea. If Villa?s home form goes which it is looking like doing so then they will fall into the bottom three because their away form is so bad with just one win, though they did manage to win 3-1 at Sheffield United in the FA Cup.

A City win then to keep them in second place & the big question is if they will win the title at the expense of their great city rivals? No is my view.

Blackburn are higher than West Brom in the table thanks in no small part to the 3-1 victory they had at the Hawthorns over the holiday period. Blackburn are 11th & West Brom 14th but only three points separates the two teams. My bet is that both sides will stay up this season.

West Brom won last Saturday when they beat Blackpool 3-2 to end a bad run they had been on. Perhaps it is just as well that they are out of the FA Cup as it is more important that they stay in the Premiership than the distraction of an FA Cup. Blackburn are in the 4th round however after beating Championship leaders QPR 1-0 in the last round. Last Saturday Blackburn lost 2-0 at Chelsea but I don?t think they will be too disappointed as their fans will still be celebrating their victory over Liverpool in their last home game when they won 3-1.

West Brom have managed to win this season at Arsenal & Everton & have also picked up draws at West Ham, Manchester United & that I?m afraid is it as they have lost the rest of their away games at Chelsea, Liverpool, Wigan, Bolton, West Brom & A thriller at the Villa when they lost 2-1. Ha. Not a good away record then & they come up against a Blackburn side who have beaten Liverpool, Everton, Wigan & Wolves but they have lost to Arsenal, Chelsea & Stoke. A mixed bag that includes draws with Fulham, Sunderland & West Ham.

Blackburn?s home form should be enough to take the three points methinks.

Match 10: Bolton ? Chelsea: (Monday January 24th: 8pm):

This game should be a difficult one for Chelsea as Bolton despite their recent bad away form are still doing well at home. They have in fact only lost once at home this season & that was a 1-0 defeat against Liverpool some months ago. For the rest of the season Bolton have beaten Spurs, Blackburn, West Brom, Stoke & Newcastle as well as drawing with Fulham, Manchester United, Birmingham & Wigan (Last home League Game). As mentioned the only defeat was against Liverpool.

Chelsea come into the game having beaten Blackburn at home 2-0 last Saturday & will hoping to build upon that following some bad results away from home the last month or so. They lost at Wolves last time away which was their 5th away defeat of the season & 6th overall. Chelsea because of their bad run just before & over the holidays have slipped to 4th in the table (They were top for three months) & are 7 points behind Manchester United & City. I can?t see Chelsea regaining their title & to be honest unless their chairman puts some serious money in for transfers than the natural cycle of the side will be only decline from now on in. It must be questionable if they will qualify for the Champions League.

Bolton have a good home record & Chelsea have a recent bad away one so it would seem obvious to me that Bolton must start the game as favourites.

Space station's humanoid robot comes alive

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? NASA's humanoid robot has finally awakened in space.

Ground controllers turned Robonaut on Monday for the first time aboard the International Space Station. The robot was delivered to the orbiting complex back in February. It took this long for the operating software to get up there, and for the astronauts to have enough time to help with the experiment.

The test involved sending power to all of Robonaut's systems. The robot was not commanded to move. That will happen next week.

Team members were exhilarated by Monday's successful test. It's being tested as a possible astronaut's helper.

Robonaut, also known as R2, is the first humanoid robot in space. For now, it exists from the waist up.

NIH-commissioned study identifies gaps in NIH funding success rates for black researchers

Black applicants from 2000-2006 were 10 percentage points less likely than white applicants to be awarded research project grants from the National Institutes of Health after controlling for factors that influence the likelihood of a grant award, according to an NIH-commissioned study in the journal Science. In an accompanying commentary, NIH Director Francis Collins, M.D., Ph.D., and Principal Deputy Director Lawrence Tabak, D.D.S, Ph.D., call the findings unacceptable and commit to immediate action by the NIH.

"NIH commissioned this study because we want to learn more about the challenges facing the scientific community and address them head on. The results of this study are disturbing and disheartening, and we are committed to taking action," said Dr. Collins. "The strength of the U.S. scientific enterprise depends upon our ability to recruit and retain the brightest minds, regardless of race or ethnicity. This study shows that we still have a long way to go. It is imperative that NIH and its partners in the biomedical research community take decisive steps to identify causes and implement remedies. NIH is already moving forward with a framework for action."

NIH initiated the study in 2008 to determine if researchers of different races and ethnicities with similar research records and affiliations had similar likelihoods of being awarded a new NIH research project grant, known as a Type 1 R01. The study, which also received funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), was conducted by researchers at the University of Kansas, Discovery Logic/Thompson Reuters, and NIH. It found that typical measures of scientific achievement did not translate to the same level of application success for black applicants. The study controlled for education, citizenship, country of origin, training, employer characteristics, prior research awards, and publication record. Although Asian applicants also were less likely to receive an award than white applicants, those differences disappeared when the sample was limited to U.S. citizens. Award probability for Hispanic applicants did not differ significantly from white applicants.

"In order to improve the health outcomes of all Americans, it's important for the biomedical workforce to reflect the diversity of the population," said Donna Ginther, Ph.D., professor of economics at the University of Kansas and lead author of the study. "As the population becomes increasingly diverse, we will continue to get further from that goal unless the community intervenes."

The study is part of a larger effort by NIH to examine and improve the diversity of its funded biomedical research workforce. Diversity includes race, ethnicity, gender, age, disabilities, and socioeconomic status. This study focused solely on race and ethnicity since there are few studies on the racial and ethnic composition of federal research funding applicants. The study provides a solid benchmark for further studies of grant success rates and against which progress can be measured.

While further examination is needed to identify causes for the differences in NIH R01 grant success, one possibility the authors cite is that the quality of educational and mentoring experiences may differ for applicants who self-identify as black or African-American. The study shows that researchers of all racial and ethnic backgrounds improve their award probability by participating in NIH fellowship and traineeship programs. However, NIH training programs did not reduce the differences in award probability for black applicants. According to the study, this may suggest that current NIH graduate and postdoctoral training programs do not equally benefit all racial and ethnic groups.

More research is also needed to investigate the possibility of conscious or unconscious bias in the scientific review process. Applicants' race and ethnicity were voluntarily disclosed by the applicants themselves as part of the application process. Though information on race and ethnicity of the applicant is not available to reviewers, an applicant's name or institutional affiliation included in the application biography can be suggestive of their race or ethnicity.

Also of concern to NIH is the low number of applications for NIH R01 grants from non-white applicants. Of the 40,069 individual applicants included in the 2000 to 2006 study, 1.5 percent self-identified as black or African-American (598), 3.3 percent as Hispanic (1,319), 13.5 percent as Asian (5,402), 71 percent as white (28,456), and 11 percent as other/unknown.

These figures are consistent with data showing that the number of underrepresented populations in the fields of science and medicine remains small. While blacks, Hispanics and Asians/Pacific Islanders make up 34 percent of the U.S. population, they account for 18 percent of individuals pursuing graduate degrees in biological sciences, according to a 2008 National Science Foundation survey of graduate students and post doctorates in science and engineering. These three populations are also underrepresented in tenured and tenure track faculty positions within biological science departments, resulting in a dearth in role models from underrepresented populations.

"Recruiting the best minds to biomedical research is a shared responsibility," said Dr. Tabak, principal deputy director for NIH and chair of the NIH Diversity Taskforce. "It's up to the academic community to foster and support inquisitive minds and a love of science in people of all races, ethnicities, genders, and socioeconomic backgrounds. And it's up to NIH to ensure that everyone enjoys the same opportunity for NIH funding to succeed in their scientific endeavors."

NIH has developed and is implementing a framework for action to:

• Increase the number of early career reviewers including those from underrepresented populations. Consistent with the study's finding that service on NIH's grant review study sections correlates with success in grant applications, NIH has initiated the new Early Career Reviewer program to encourage promising junior faculty to participate in peer review panels, and learn how these groups discuss, evaluate, and score grant applications. The goal is to develop their skills as reviewers and contribute to the overall effectiveness of peer review. NIH is making a special effort to inform investigators from underrepresented groups about this program. It recently requested nominations of faculty or researchers, specifically including those at less research-intensive institutions who are actively involved and established in biomedical research and have published in high-quality scientific journals, but who may not yet have received major peer-reviewed research support. The aim is to have 50 early career reviewers assigned to each of NIH's three rounds of grant review in the 2012 fiscal year.
• Examine the grant review process for bias and develop interventions. NIH will conduct innovative experiments to shed light on possible sources of bias in the grant review process, and to develop appropriate interventions. Possibilities include removal of all identifying information from applications, testing reviewer ability to determine applicant race, assessing different types and timing of training against bias, and assessing whether the proportion of minority reviewers on a peer review panel affects outcome for minority applicants.
• Improve support for grant applicants. NIH will assess the value of providing additional technical assistance to applicants in grant preparation, and supporting innovative approaches to encourage more extensive and effective local mentoring of junior faculty.
• Gather expert advice on additional action steps. NIH will gather expert advice through two high-level advisory groups that have been formed by the NIH Director: the NIH Diversity Task Force (part of the NIH Director's Steering Committee) and an external panel of distinguished experts on a newly formed Diversity in Biomedical Research Working Group reporting to Dr. Collins through the Advisory Committee to the Director. These two groups will address how NIH can better articulate its interest in diversity, better identify actions NIH can take to achieve its stated goals of recruiting the best and brightest minds to the biomedical research workforce, and sustain an environment that nurtures and encourages diversity.

The poll is more carnival than actual voting event and the results get swayed by showmanship and good organizing skills.

George W. Bush is the only presidential candidate to ever win the Iowa Straw Poll and go on to win the White House. Former winners include Pat Robertson and Romney with neither winning the nomination later. Romney made the calculated decision not to appear this year and received only 567 votes.

The media is doing their best to cloud the presidential race as the Republicans cut down the field of candidates. Bachmann's win was a narrow victory over another fringe candidate, Ron Paul, Yahoo! News reports. Many political pundits in Iowa this week felt Ron Paul would win a narrow victory.

Bachmann's campaign workers were diligent and they gathered their supporters with a vengeance during the straw poll process. Being a great organizer is great during an election but as we have witnessed with Barrack Obama, being a great organizer is not going to translate in the White House.

Bachmann is still the same candidate she was before the Ames Iowa Straw Poll. She is a fringe candidate, who will wield power in the decision-making process once the convention gets close in 2012. Bachmann will get votes but she will also split voters with key candidates, including new entry, Rick Perry.

Both candidates are courting the religious right, which makes up 15 percent of the Republican Party. The base of the party will come from the fiscal Republicans looking for a fiscal conservative who is going to turn Washington upside down.

The battle between Perry and Bachmann could be the battle for a place on the 2012 Republican ticket. Either one could bring plenty to the table as a vice president but neither is capable of winning the Republican presidential nomination on their own.

The win in Iowa will give Bachmann some needed financial support and confidence but in the end it means nothing. Romney is still the lead candidate and the battle continues for second place.
